Although not Buddhists, all of us enjoyed ourselves tremendously viewing all the exquisite carvings. In particular, it was pointed out that the wand alone of one of the 3 giant figures was 1 ton and that the weight of the hand and folds of the sleeves were calculated precisely so that it can support the wand. The cycle of life including the 18-levels of hell were very well presented - no sense of the macabre; they simply provoked some sobering thoughts. Definitely worth a visit and I would advise anyone interested in stone carvings and making the effort to go to Baodingshan to also consider visiting Beishan. It's a pity that Beishan is so under-promoted.
