“Very Nice Lodging”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2012

I really enjoyed staying at this hotel. The front desk people were very nice and were easy to communicate with. The food was great. My room was simple, but very well done. One drawback is the shower fits very tightly in between the vanity and the toilet and is not enclosed (common for China). I really enjoyed the courtyards of this hotel because, once I entered the inner area of courtyards, I had plenty of peace and quiet! Tian Yuan Kui is located centrally in the city and is only a 10-15 minute walk to all shops. When I go back to Pingyao, I'll definitely stay here.

The location couldn’t be better for exploring Pingyao , staff are friendly and have enough English to be helpful. Rooms are full of character , food is great and atmosphere is relaxed . Can highly recommend the chicken soup !!

Room Tip: Our room was right at the back , it wasvery quiet .

If you are looking for a funky, little hostel in the middle of Ping Yao, with good food, great atmosphere, and friendly staff that speak English, then this is your place!

The owner, Rainbow, was incredibly helpful and friendly--we felt welcomed from the moment we stepped through the door. There is not one negative thing I can say about our experience here. Try it, you won't regret it!

Room Tip: If you want quiet, ask for a room near the back--you feel as if you are in a different world from th...

Despite the fact that we had booked over a month in advance (confirmed and paid); they were overbooked the first night we were there and put us in a dumpy overflow room down a long dark alley in a noisy courtyard with no internet. We complained and they moved us to a better room, but in the same location. The second day they apologized and moved us back into the main complex; the room was ok but starting to look a bit worn. The shower drained all over the bathroom floor. At least the beds were good and internet was good. Also on the plus side, the location was really good, and the staff spoke English and were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast (extra $) was very good. All in all not bad, but a little pricy for what we got.

We have spend the New Year's of 2012 in Pingyao and around. You can hardly call Tian yuan kui hotel - a hostel. It's amazing, very cute hotel located within the city walls on the central street. It has a great restaurant, where we had New Year dinner. As for desert option - apples in caramel sauce is very much recommended. The room was very nice and warm even when it's completely freezing outside. The decor of the restaurant is one of the best I've seen. We got a chance to travel around Pingyao, the tour was booked thorough "Harmony" hostel, that is just down the street. Wangjia Dayuan is a must see sight! You can combine it will another 1 or 2 places to visit during the same trip, it is only 1 hour outside the town. The staff is very friendly, they will offer you to arrange a transportation from the train station when you arrive and back there, when it's time to leave. Take the offer, it will cost you the same as if you would have gone for a drive outside of train station.
Even though the town appeared a bit musty and dusty in the winter, probably because of the coal heating, and I guess the best time to visit would have been in the spring, it still had the charm. I actually would call it a hidden gem and Pingyao was more impressive compared to Xian with thousands of tourists!

I've been travelling around China and Asia for last 5 years and this hostel is one of the best I've ever stayed in.
The owner is very amiable and friendly, same can be said about the stuff. The service was great, all stuff smiling and being very helpful+ we got a cup of free welcoming coffee, free railway pick up and drop off, green tea - good bye gift (we will miss you, guys!)... It was a home like stay in windy, cold Pingyao (the place itself is a magic, regardless to the weather, I have to say though...check it up right here:

The rooms are clean, with traditional Chinese kang chuang (kang beds), the court yard is cozy and decorated with red lights. Do check out the restaurant also: great food reasonably priced, real coffee and desserts (apple in caramel being our favourite one!)

We really enjoyed this wonderful inn that's full of courtyard style character. The staff are to be congratulated on excellent and friendly service. Our room was very clean and warm. Try the Chinese breakfast rather than Western choices, not that there was anything wrong with Western, just a good chance to try Chinese. All meals we had were excellent. Staff also arranged train tickets for Xian which worked out perfectly. Location could not be better.
