“Lovely room, not 5* location or service, esp for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

I really expected to love the Song Saa, and while it is a nice resort (really lovely villas, though not very private; nice water, small but lovely sand beach; excellent plunge pools) it does not compare well against other properties in its price category elsewhere. It should be priced at 1/2 its cost, but we expected much more at this price level. The island is very small and feels quite overdeveloped; villas are quite close together and the beach is really tiny; at full capacity I can anticipate problems arising over the lack of space. And despite this, they have the cheek to charge for excursions to a local, larger beach.

Service is well-meaning, but not what you expect at £1400 a night. Each room service request took multiple phone calls to sort. The place felt poorly managed. The main restaurant/bar closed early, inexplicably, one night; we arrived for a drink only to find it locked down. There were only 4 wines on offer (despite our asking for the reserve list, which never materialised); the food also was of very average quality--not up to par with what is served at even 4* properties). The "dining in the pool" option suggested to us was particularly odd-- we should have been told that we would have dinner at a table sitting in 3 inches of water on a windy night (ie: your feet are in water for the meal(why ?). All the diners sat with their feet splayed on the table support.

If you are looking for a luxury beach tag-on to a trip to Siem Reap (which is what we did), this is really the only Cambodian option-- not a bad one, and a nice add-on. But as a destination trip on its own, I can't really recommend.

Room Tip: Do not get one of the first couple of over water bungalows; they are close to the delivery/staff boa...

Dear 288 Maisie,

Thank you for taking your time to post your review on Trip Advisor. We value all feedback we receive from our guests as we continually to strive to improve Song Saa Private Island's services, showcasing Cambodia's wonderful beauty and hospitality.

We are very happy you enjoyed our lovely villas, sandy beach and our relaxing plunge pools. I was most disappointed to learn that whilst you found our teams service well-meaning, there were shortfalls in your experience which did not live up to your expectations. Rest assured that I have taken all your feedback very seriously, and will fully assess the aspects you mentioned.

In reference to your comments regarding Vista Restaurant and Bar all your points have been shared with our senior food & beverage team and our executive chef. During the month of December we did receive some unseasonal weather conditions, including strong winds, which did affect our usual dining operations. Unfortunately, this included our signature restaurant and bar, which had to be closed slightly earlier to ensure the comfort and safety of all of our guests. During these occasions our Driftwood bar was continually operating where we offer wood fire pizza, tapas-style dishes, private destination dining experiences and, of course, our extensive 24 hour in-villa dining menu.

Our suggested daily destination dining experiences are often the highlight of our guests' stay, with opportunities to dine in secluded romantic locations and sample a variety of dining options. I do apologise if the pool dining suggestion was not fully explained to you, and was not to your liking.

288 Maisie, thank you again for taking the time to review your stay with us. We sincerely appreciate your honest feedback, and we do hope you will return in the future so we may have the opportunity to showcase our property, services and amenities once again.

Warm Regards

Greg

Been think about this for a while, its difficult to know where to start, so..
this is probably the best "All inclusive" hotel in the world! Everything is within the price except for a few excursions, mainly to Koh Rong. (we went, fabulous day out). Its a small set of islands with nothing on one of them and everything on the other! We stayed in a "Jungle Villa" facing westwards so we had beautiful views of the sunset. The villa itself was immaculate with a well stocked mini bar and room service available 24hr (from which you could order anything you like!), Meals could be taken in the restaurant area or in your room. An innovation (for us at least) was the "destination dining" concept. Simply ask the staff to lay a table where you like and they will. You can order food not on the menu and they will provide it too. There are various activities, eg, canoeing, sailing, snorkling etc or you can just simply lounge by the main infinity pool or by your own. Probably the standout feature for both of us however, were the staff. They are charm personified, courteous and polite and never seen without a smile. Well done to the management for having such faith in the local people. The owners do lots of stuff for the environment, the locals etc (see their own PR for this information), but its not cynical like you sometimes see around the world, it really is joy to see.

If you're used to hanging around 7 Star hotels in Dubai (or similar places) then you probably wouldn't enjoy it here, the service is too laid back and perhaps the food is not 3 Michelin star either, however, that simply misses the point of the place.
Well done and a big thanks to everyone involved

Room Tip: get there early on your arrival day and stay as late as you can on your leaving day

My husband and I had so looked forward to our time at Song Saa, and it far exceeded our expectations. From the friendly welcome and speedy transfer from the local airport to our final departure, we couldn't have wished for better service.
We loved the luxurious but laid back feel to the island, the attention to detail such as the hand written suggestions for our evening meal each day on parchment paper bound with natural twine, the flower petals in the bathroom and candles lit on our return to the villa each night.
Our jungle villa was beautiful. Crisp linen, exquisite toiletries, so many choices of where to bathe and shower! An inviting plunge pool and relaxing day bed, and a well stocked mini bar with all your favourite drinks, it's a wrench to leave your room, but leave you must to enjoy the small but perfectly formed beach or infinity pool or to enjoy some of the low key activities available such as kayaking or snorkelling.
All the food was excellent, we loved the romance of the destination dining, our favourite spot for pre and post dinner drinks was at the Vista bar to enjoy the music, the sound of the sea and gazing at the stars with a cocktail in our hand.
I have to mention the pizzas at the Driftwood bar, amazing!
Every guest should also try the 'Isla Experience' at the spa, two hours of pampering and sheer bliss!
But the Island wouldn't be what it is without it's charming, curteous staff, a big thank you to all for making our stay so pleasurable. A special thanks to Greg for providing us with a copy of the sound track we so enjoyed, we've linked it to our holiday photos and have already listened to it many times.
Four nights just wasn't long enough, and hopefully we will return next year for a longer stay. We can't wait!

Gorgeous, idyllic island paradise, we loved our stay in Song Saa. We stayed in a jungle villa, the cheapest room (if such a term can apply to villas on this island!), but actually really liked how they felt very private and secluded from each other. Loved how you pretty much felt that you had the island to yourself and how quiet/intimate it is. I think this is ultimately what you're paying for: not the level of finish or the environmental commitment or anything else but just the sheer intimacy and privacy of it all. We hardly bumped into anyone and loved the way the island was set up (just six loungers by the pool, a few on the beach... meaning everyone spaced out and you also tended to spend your days in different locations. In a similar vein, love how they suggest you eat in different locations every night and vary the menu to avoided dreaded 'same table, same menu' syndrome. The infinity pool is beautiful and loved sunrise (kind of) yoga there. Loved the spa, the therapists were fabulous. We felt that occasionally service could have been a tiny bit sharper in some cases (felt like some staff were possibly still being trained up?) although a few staff were just excellent and massively over-delivered. But overall loved the place - it is real barefoot luxury, casual & chilled, just the sort of place we love on holiday, definitely not an all airs and graces kind of place!

Room Tip: Jungle view villas very nice indeed and actually feel more well spaced than the ocean view villas

1 week in paradiese! We a arrived on 14 January for one week in an ocean view villa.
Due to other recomendations here on tripadvisor we already arrived with high expectations, but they are more then fullfilled on song saa island. Now it is difficult to find the right words.
It is really a PRIVATE Island we felt like alone on these island, there a few moments where you can see other guests.(18 Villas where occupied during our stay) Even in the evening in the restaurant was never more then 2-3 couples.
The dinning experiences is so different and fantastic, it is special. We had nearly every evening a different locations. For example: alone on the beach a barbecue for two with romantic fire, or IN the pool a table for two, or at the boat deck. If you are in love with your partner and you really want to relax Song Saa is THE place to be. But beside of the the beautiful location and private atmosphere we enyoyed, the point what us really impressed is the team and staff of Song Saa.
It is unbelievable, how friendly and warm hearted the treat us, we felt like friends or family.
We spent afterwards 4 days in an Aman Resort so we are able to recognize. Aman Resort staff is just perfect definetly. But the Song Saa team touched our heart. We felt like at home.
The water sport team is just wonderful, I could sail when ever I want where ever i want. With Elena from Diving I had an phantastic dive on a lonely beach on Kong Ra island. Furhter more
for waterski it was perfect, in the evening a ride away from the resort, through the bay was just wonderful, the water was so soft, no wakes it was just perfect.
Besides the design of the bungalows and facilities is harmonically integrated in the natural surrounding. They have high efforts for natural protection and support the local comunity.
The sea arround Song Saa has, like everywhere on the world, sometimes waste and driftwood.
This waste reach the beaches of Kong Ra the main neighbor island, but the song saa management pay locals to clean this beaches and collect the driftwoods and waste.
I did not say that sea is dirty, just normal driftwood and plastic, you can find as well on the maledives or the carribean, even on the wonderful tobago cays you have this.
But in other 5 star resorts they clean also the beaches but only their own resort beaches.
The song saa management take the responsiblity also for other beaches, lonely beaches on Kong Ra to keep this envirement protected. This Song Saa Management takes the responsibilty also for the local fishing village, and the envirement protection arround.
This we really appreciate and try to support.
The price is high but it is worthy every cent.
We will definetely return hopefully for more then a week.
Definetly nothing to complain, just a wonderful, perfect, amazing and romantic week in paradise.

Room Tip: Ocean View Villas - be totally private!

if you want the 'one and only' where your sunglasses are polished by the pool then....this is probably not for you. It wasn't what we expected, London couple chasing the sun via Vietnam and Cambodia with some cities and touring. If you're control freaks (we are a bit..) then this might be a bit out of your comfort zone as you don't really call the shots. It took as a couple of days to stop fighting the need to plan everything, be in control and weirdly we really started enjoying it! It's a small but perfectly formed island and because of that and for pure inspiration you dine differently with a different menu each night (you can always have in villa dining or talk about other options if you don't want to take the hotels suggestion). We loved it, it was an 'experience' not just another (vastly expensive and soulless hotel). Saying that and I wish them hugely well in what they are doing but (sorry) it is overpriced for the comparative (very well meaning but not Aman level) service. I mentioned that as sad Europeans we chased the sun and to be in a jungle villa where the sun doesn't hit the daybed until 3pm meant getting down to the pool where 6 beds where 'optioned' by sun creams and a book with people appearing late morning. We asked for mats by our pool in the room and problem solved, although we were up early we usually got a place by the pool, we' then head back to our stunning room (really stunning and huge) for lunch. It's 'echo/chic', if you like six senses you'll love it, if you want to wear gold sandals by the pool forget it. As this review is entitled it is unique and I love it for that and for what they are doing for the community that they are part of. The food is amazing, we love new and different, just incredible, inventive delicious food which is so important to us. I have to be honest it was brilliant but, is it over priced (I hate saying this) the service just doesn't cut it. If you're shoes off, laid back, want unique, interesting and amazing food, and happy to go with it, you'll love it. I wish all at Song Saa the very best.

Room Tip: The jungle room we had didn't get the sun until the afternoon. Knowing what I do now, I would ha...

Dear Anna B,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review of Song Saa Private Island.

It is always pleasing to hear from somebody who understands we have set out to do something different in a new environment from other resorts.

I was happy to read you thoroughly enjoyed the numerous menu and dining options offered each evening and the amazing creations of our culinary team who took great pride in reading your feedback.

Apart from our stunning villas we are extremely proud of our ongoing community work and strong relationships with our neighboring communities on the nearby island of Koh Rong. We have and will continue to work to help the growth of these local communities.

Our jungle villas are located amongst the rainforest canopy with the choice of sunrise and sunset views. Every villa also features a relaxing day bed by your private pool, which allows you to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. It was pleasing to read the team came up with a speedy resolution to your request of mats by your pool to help you enjoy the sunshine.

We are all disappointed to read our service on this occasion was not quite there as Cambodia's first Private Island in its first full year of operation we are striving to provide a high level of service with wonderful Cambodian hospitality on every occasion.

The whole team appreciates your feedback and we do hope you will return so we may welcome you back and showcase our islands services.

Warm Regards

Greg
