“Simplicity at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

My wife and I stayed in a bungalow at Mushroom Point for a couple of nights in October 2013. The bungalows are very simple (small but comfortable bed, mosquito net, fan, and electrical outlets) but clean and very affordable. The bungalow also comes with a private bathroom about 10 ft outside the front door in a separate hut. I believe there's also a dorm room for those traveling alone or on a tighter budget. The common areas at mushroom point are very comfortable as they have futons, a bar, hammocks, and are usually playing decent music. They also have an on-site restaurant that is amazing. Although Mushroom Point is not directly on the beach, it is only a short walk across a dirt road about 30-40 meters to beach. If you get tired of hanging out at Mushroom Point, you can walk to at least 15-20 other guesthouses (each with a bar and restaurant) to find something that suits your taste. The beach here can not be overstated. It is beautiful, the water is warm, the sand is white, and the ocean breeze cools the hot cambodian air to a near-perfect temperature. One thing to remember is that Mushroom Point is in Otres Beach a few miles outside of the larger town of Sihanoukville and there are no ATMs and no one takes credit/debit cards. Also, the standard tuk-tuk fare to Otres Beach from Sihanoukville is $5, so it's best to not have to catch a ride into town for an ATM run.

I stayed at mushroom point for two nights. Most of the stuff is really friendly and nice. They help you out with finding stuff and activitys and can give you tips. The Dorm is nice but it gets bright too fast. The showers are absolutley fine, dont expect luxus we are still in cambodia. Its overall a cool chilled place to stay, nothing for backpackers who are looking for massive partey..they should go to led zephire.

Allthough its really pricey for cambodia . The food is hillarious but as said, too pricy.

If you want to go to the city sihanoukville at night you can do that. You just should be aware of getting robbed on the way there and back cause its dark and really really lonley. People got robbed on their way back loads of times. Luckly we did not!

Overall if you want to just chill and have a nice time mushroom point is your spot. If you want to party stay in sihanoukville!!

I don't understand the negative reviews here? I understand everyone is different, but YOU ARE TRAVELLING!! it's not a 5 star hotel, the water will be cold sometimes and the electricity will shut down.

All staff were amazing, I've travelled for 5 months now and this is a hard place to beat. Was supposed to stay 2 days and it became 2 weeks. A great place to meet new people.

If i had to find a negative there should be x2 security guards for both mushroom points. But keep your belongings in a safe place like any beach front location.

I would defiantly return here.

I stayed at Mushroom Point a few years ago and has a so so experience (at the time obnoxious staff and management ruined it). But time is a great healer so we returned 2 years later.

I wish we hadn't.

The place is trading on good reviews and hype that just isn't followed through. It's comparatively expensive, not comfortable at all, has poor security ($50 deposit to use the safe!) and the rules! Oh my the rules. Someone loves their printer and laminator. There's a rule for everything! And it's quite degrading as an adult to have to ask for toilet paper.

So if you like staying in an uncomfortable gimmick with poor security and a penchant for rules then Mushroom Point is for you.

If you want something more value for your money and safe then go somewhere like Pappa Pippo.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night at the end of our stay at Otres Beach.

I enjoyed the novelty of sleeping in a mushroom. The bedroom was comfy and we had a nice view directly onto the beach from our latch window. Mushroom Point is a bit more expensive than other places on the beach, but I think they get away with it, because of the novelty value.

The staff were really lovely at the time that I was staying there - a nice mix of Cambodian and European bar workers. The bar / restaurant area is directly on the beach and is lovely to chill out in.

The bathroom areas are shared. The showers do tend to spray the toilets with water constantly, which is a bit annoying and means that any toilet paper left in there becomes damp. Nevertheless, the bathrooms always seemed clean.

The bungalow walls are very thin and you hear everything going on around you. Considering how small Otres Beach is, you are unlikely to find a place that is completely immune from the noise of beach revellers, so I can't really knock Mushroom Point for that.

I stayed in the dorm, which is a bit pricy at $7/night, but very cool...see previous descriptions. In fact, everything about this place is cool: architecture, staff, guests.

Food is REALLY REALLY good, and not too outrageous considering.

I marked down on location only because M1 (where dorms are) isn't on the beach, but M2 is- as well as a goid beach club.

I marked down on service because, as previous reviews said: toilet paper! You'd think it was gold bars left on the back of the commode instead of tissues. I did have to ask almost every time. This seemed crazy to me considering there was TP almost everywhere in Cambodia, not like India where you have to lift the odd roll when you see it!

We loved staying in our cute little mushroom bungalow. It was simple and clean. The food was really good, especially the bbq Squid and Prawns. The cocktails were also really good. Otres Beach is a lot quieter than the main town of Sihanoukville, which we really didnt like. We prefer to get away from the crowds and Mushroom Point was the perfect place to kick back and relax. The only annoying thing was the locals on the beach, trying to sell things. They can get quite annoying at times, but this is to be expected when travelling in Asia. You can get a cheap massage, fresh fruit and various souvenirs from the ladies on the beach. The beachfront is perfect for a walk and there are also a variety of other restaurants to choose from too. Overall, we loved staying here and I often recommend it to others that are going to the Sihanoukville area. Just make sure you dont go leaving any of your things laying around on the beach while you are swimming (bags etc) as you will almost definitely find them gone. Friendly staff and owners too. :)

Room Tip: Choose a private room if you would like your own bathroom.
