“No longer exists!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2011

We went out to Otres today to look for Otres Shack, and couldn't find it! The tuk-tuk drivers and the guys at the Mushroom bungalow spot told us that it, along with a lot of other places, got bulldozed by the government last year for being on the wrong piece of land. I can't attest to the veracity of the story, but if you're thinking of staying here, trying phoning first!

Very awesome. Cambodia is off the beaten path. Do not expect glamour. This is backpackers paradise!!!

Otres Shack is strange. In some ways it's brilliant in others poor and sometimes weird. Basically you are paying more than for anywhere else on the beach for the 'right on the beach' location - which is amazing. You wake up in the morning and step straight out onto the beach and it is totally beautiful. That experience was somewhat dampened however by the sleepless nights we had as they turn the electricity (and thus your fan) off at midnight and because the rooms are right on the beach you can't open the door to get a breeze for security reasons so you sweat it out all night. Plus our fan didn't quite go off when the electricity cut out and just made a really loud buzzing noise - which was actually nothing in comparison to the crickets which screeched all night causing me to scream angrily at my husband "What is this - WHITE NOISE torture!?!? I feel like I'm in Guantanamo "Bay!!!!"
The mosquito nets had holes in, the rooms weren't very clean and I had to ask several times for them to clean our toilet which was filthy. Also, the tap water at the beach is awful which is to be expected but I thought it pretty crappy that after we were warned not to drink or use the water to brush our teeth we were then not provided with any clean water (we were provided with complementary water EVERYWHERE else we stayed in Cambodia).
The shack is run by a british couple, Tracey and Dave... when we first arrived there was an uncomfortable, cliquey feel and when ordering at the bar we always felt like we were interupting... then suddenly Tracey became the super host being really attentive and super nice (she helped my brother when he got sun burned by soaking rags in cold tea for him and getting him a tub of ice water for his feet). She suggested excursions for us and helped me to book a hotel for our return to Phnom Penh so I can't really fault her. Overall though the stay was uncomfortable and I wouldn't stay there again - I would suggest staying somewhere cheaper in town (with air con!) and taking a moto down to the beach for the day (you can use the Otres Shack sun loungers) The food and drinks were great but more expensive than other places on the beach - but the chair and sun louger cushions were constantly damp and filthy. It wouldn't be a bad place if it was half the price but the rooms and service (compared with other places we stayed in Cambodia) just didn't warrant the price plus we had been spoiled by Khmer hospitality in other places and the owners of Otres Shack just didn't provide anything near! Basically Otres Shack is all about location so if you don't mind about the other stuff or the price then it's brilliant.

Although we didn't sleep here, we stayed next door as they were full, but we spent most of our time here. The food & company was excellent. Dave & Tracey are excellent hosts and were very informative and were able to assist with anything we asked them.
If you want a nice quiet beach and want home comforts this is the place for you, but Book Early to avoid dissappointment.
You must be aware that Sihanoukville is an up an coming area, but Otres Beach has not yet been touched by this hence the fact that all electricity is via generators, which are turned off when the bar closes. Make sure you bring a torch!
They have free Wi-Fi so you can keep in touch with loved ones and friends.

As we were arriving in Sihanoukville in peak season we wanted to book somewhere to stay in advance. After searching the internet and guidebooks for places in Otres beach area the only place I was able to book on-line was Queens Hill resort so opted for that. The fact we only stayed there one night probably says it all! The second day we walked along the lovely Otres beach looking for a better option and saw many $5-$25 rooms that were fine but when we came across Otres shack we knew we had found "The one"! The room was the most expensive we saw at $30 a night but was just beautiful, lovely big bed with mosquito net, directly on the beach and about 5-6 steps to the sea - perfect. As with all the places on Otres beach power is via a generator which was not on all the time but this was not a problem. The owners are English and very helpful arranging moto taxis for us for night out in the town and do a very nice English breakfast too!

If you're looking for a lovely quite stretch of beach with lots of bars and restaurants nearby and enjoy waking up to the sound of the waves then you'll love it here.

This is a lovely place to stay and a refreshing antidote to the madness that is Sihanoukville. Literally right on the beach, Otres Shack only has three rooms and a bar/restaurant. It is run by a very friendly British couple. They have great attention to detail, and unlike the other places on Otres, they have added nice room touches like matching sheets, stylish sinks and romantic lighting. The bar has a 0.50$ beer happy hour, is equipped with wifi and serves decent food.

Otres is a spectacular, quiet beach and so much nicer than anything in the main part of Sihanoukville. Electricity is on a generator and the town is a 4$ tuk (10-15min away) - thankfully, I think this keeps a lot of the riff raff out. This place was a trip highlight, and I would recommend you go now and catch it while it is still relatively undiscovered...
