“Great place away from it all”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2010

We stayed at the family cottage which had plenty of room for the four of us, plus are small dog. The charm of this place is that it is tucked away from everything else. The room is clean, well supplied with the essencials. It has trails to walk through, beautiful scenery. No phone or cell service so its perfect to get away from work. Its an easy drive down to Kernville which offers whitewater rafting, fishing or Lake Isabella. Breakfast is served at 9am for $8, and you really want to take advantage of that. We had rafting commitment and couldn't eat before we left, it smelled wonderful. Next time we will be sure and make time to eat.

My wife, two-year-old, and I visited Durrwood Creekside Lodge between Christmas and New Years. First, the good. The rooms face a creek, and the sight and sound of running water is great. The owners seem to be nice friendly people. But unfortunately we're not able to recommend this place. The property is cluttered and dirty. The room wasn't particularly clean. The bar of soap was a used bar of soap. The breakfast was passable but nothing special. But the worst was that the room was not at all heated before our arrival - it was 40 degrees outside, and about the same temperature inside. The owner turned on the small electric heater as we entered the room, and it took about 3 hours to warm up. We were f-f-freezing!

I had looked at all the reviews of the motels and lodges north of Kernville and decided on Durrwood and it did not disappoint. It is wonderfully quiet and cozy; a simple, but beautiful place. Ralph and Diana are the owners and their young son will charm you to pieces.
First off, if you're expecting anything other then a stay that has charm, cleanliness, no bugs in the room, and most important no telephone (or cell phone reception) or TV (other than a DVD player) in the room, than this is the place for you.
They have three horses available for rides, a family of cows, and a beautiful rabbit, all who are very friendly (OK so maybe the bull is a little impersonal). Deer occasionally wander through to disturb the tranquility. This is just a very peaceful place along the creek to get away from it all. I recommend it highly for those seeking solitude.
Just don't, as previous rewiews have stated, catch it on a night when they might have loud guests.
We stayed in the Moose Room and it was great!

Ralph & Diane were great hosts. Our son enjoyed the company of their son. We all enjoyed our stay. We walked the property and enjoyed the hikes, the animals, the gameroom. Our family enjoyed a great tasting breakfast, too. Its a simple facility but w/ a ton of coziness, conform and relaxation. We stayed in the Deer Room w/ our 2 kids. We are already planning another trip to this area, just so we can stay at the Durrwood again. We had a great 4th of July weekend at the Durwood and cant wait to visit again.

This was my first experience staying at Durwood Lodge and I was hoping for a quiet getaway on the Kern River. We stayed in a room that they rent as a "cottage" which was really a barn partitioned in half with our room on one side, and a makeshift party room with bar, pool table, and musical instruments on the other side. At first, I thought this was kind of neat as an added bonus for us to use during our stay, but as I later found out, the wall separating our room from the party room was very thin. It just so happens that a large group had rented out most of the other rooms for the weekend and a big appeal of this resort to them was the use this party room late at night. On our final night the owner asked if he could move us to one of the "motel" style rooms away from the party room, so his other guests could have the use of the party room without worrying about disturbing us. Since we wanted a peaceful night of sleep, we agreed to the move, but remember the room we paid to use cost $125 per night, and the one he moved us to was $80 per night. It turns out that the motel room was actually in much better repair and had me wishing we had just rented that one instead.

Our stay wasn't all bad, however. The sound and view of the river was good from their property, exactly what I was hoping for. The owners were hospitable, and the effort to switch rooms was their effort to try to keep everybody happy. They also let me watch the Laker game in their community area since the rooms don't have cable (They have DVD players in the rooms and free movie rentals). Also, they had live rabbits, cows, horses, and pigs which were neat to show my daughter.

All in all, it was not quite the experience I had hoped for so I will try staying at some other places along the river. For the right group, Durwood has a lot to offer. If you want to have a big party or be kind of noisy, this could be the place for you. If peace and quiet are on your agenda, I would look at other places.

We had one of the best experiences at Durrwood Creekside Lodge. We were greeted with a warm welcome at the door by a beautiful woman, her name was Diana. She gave us a tour of the Lodge and the first thing I noticed was how well kept it was. The Lodge was exceptionally clean and comfortable. We felt at home the whole time we were there, and we stayed 1 week. The service was GREAT!!

Ralph and Diana "husband and wife" are the owners of the lodge. They have two well behaved children, one boy about 5 years or so and the boy is a teenager. The little boy even offered to help carry our belongings to our room, we thought that was soooo cute!

Diana cooked a homestyle breakfast for $8.00 a plate on Saturday and it was delicious!!! Diana said that her Mother taught her at a very young age how to cook, and on top of that she enjoys it! We will refer all of our friends and family to this lodge and we will deffinitly be back. There are many things to do like hike, or bike, even just sit by the rushing water from the river that runs through the back of the lodge. Thanks Ralph & Diana!

  • Liked — The friendliness of the staff and the cleaness of the lodge.
  • Disliked — We loved everything about Durrwood Creekside Lodge.
