“Surprised at room based on other travelers' reviews”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012

We stayed at Durrwood Creekside Lodge on the night of 8/4 prior to going white water rafting on the Kern River. Although the rate was favorable ($80 or $90 cash), the place seemed run down. Although the people were very nice and friendly, the room was not adequate and we were glad we only had to stay 1 night.

At first glance we were willing to overlook the "outdoorsy decor" with the animal skin on the wall (missing a foot) and the deer pillows and odd stuffed animals. Also, the room's walls, ceiling and door were made out of ply wood. The worse part was that the carpet was wet and had a large white stain on it and there were tons of spider webs on the wall as if the room hadn't been dusted in a long time.

Overall the place could be a gem if the owners decided to put some money into it.

We would never stay here again.

WE had a pleasant visit, sweet people, great breakfast and clean rooms, ok rates, The Gazebo was right by the river and we could hear the water rsuhing all weekend, We traveled to the 100 Acre Woods big Trees within a few minutes. The family that run this establishment are very nice, very attentive and we could BBQ our own food. Cable would have ben nice but other than that we had a blast.

Me and my husband had a great stay. Met alot of fun people and got to take our dog. The property is beautiful. We never had to leave the grounds to hike up to a waterfall. This place is not the ritz its furnishing are not new so dont expect to much but are room was very clean. The owners are very nice and yes they do have a very sweet 200lb dog Brutus. It is a great place for a family/freind getaway. The fire pit at night is awsome everybody hangs out for some cocktails in the evening. If you want a super quiet setting this might not be for you. If you want a beautiful veiw of the trees and river and good company this is you place. WE will be back.

We stayed in Ralph's and Diana's Bed and Breakfast on Memorial Day Weekend. This place is so charming, sitting in the middle of the woods, along a small beautiful creek. This place is unique, from it's location, to it's facilities to the people who own it. They make you feel at home far from home. The rooms are really clean and cozy, and each room has a different theme, we stayed in the Bear room, which fits 3-4 people on a queen bed and futon. One of the things I love the most about this place is the unique opportunity to get in touch with nature without the outside world amenities. It allows you to disconnect from your daily routine. There is no cell phone service up there and no Internet or TV Channels. They have a fabulous collection of DVDs and VHSs that you can borrow for free and watch in your room. No one will bother you with phone calls or emails as they won't be able to reach you up here. There is a general store 3 miles down the road where you can get food or general merchandise if needed. We also met the nicest people here. We gather with other guests around a fire pit and the barbecue and enjoy the night just talking, laughing and sharing stories...and food! (thank you Rachel and Paul!) Ralph's son, Zac, was super nice and very helpful, he even took as on a short hike to a close but hidden waterfall within their property. Also, the game room is super cool, with some unique items that American Pickers would really love to put their hands on! Durrwood is only a short ride from the 100 Giants Trail on the Sequoia National Forest and Hot Springs is also really close. Lots of activities to do: hiking, fishing, biking, exploring the outdoors and relaxing in a beautiful and peaceful environment. Also, breakfast is served at 9am and for just 8$ you get toast and eggs, hash browns, bacon, OJ, water, coffee and tea. And you get to enjoy breakfast on the dining room table around the other guest! I would recommend this place to anyone looking for an affordable, comfy and beautiful place to stay in the Sequoia National Forest. My husband and I are really looking forward to going back!! Thank you Ralph, Diana and Zac for a great time!! Oh! And Paul and Rachel, the amazing friends we met along the way :)

First of all, Ralph and Diana are some of the nicest people. Extremely accommodating and friendly. Secondly, the room was perfect and exactly what we needed, clean bed, clean shower, refrigerator and no cell service, No TV, well there are TVs with DVD players attached but no stations. Which is a good thing. Woke up to fresh pot of coffee in the am around Ralph and Dianas Dining room table and conversed with some of the other guests. They offered us breakfast in the morning for $8 which consisted of eggs, bacon, hash browns, OJ, water and toast. My son 3 was hungry and Ralph cooked him up a waffle. We passed on this the first morning regrettably, but we didn't make this mistake the next day. Although it seems your are in the middle of nowhere, it is great starting point to see some great attractions. They have a nice wrap-around porch outside your room which faces a nice creek and another porch that hangs out over the creek with a rocker and a swing. Truly relaxing. We can't wait to stay at Durwood again. And I may add that it was very reasonable compared to the other lodges and they allow well behaved dogs at no extra charge.

Room Tip: all the rooms are great

I stayed here with my husband and our daughter. It's nothing fancy, but is cozy and clean. It honestly felt like if you were to stay a night with family you're not too close to, but are very kind and nice. We originally tried to book McNally's, but it was unavailable. Durrwood is a great alternative to camping outdoors and is not too far from the central bridge at McNally's. They even provided DVDs to watch, which we didn't expect. As long as you remember you are in a camping town, you can really appreciate what luxuries Durrwood can provide you like a warm shower and comfortable bed to sleep in.

First when we arrived it appeared like something you seen in a scary movie. they have a large dog who is probably friendly, but weights approx 165 lbs being held by a 45/50 lb 7 year old. we then entered I guess what they call the office or reception office and the lounge area, it was so dark and the furniture was so old it had that old smell to it. You would be afraid to sit because its unknown what you would be sitting on. the owners I guess Ralph and Diane, well we were met by Ralph shoeless, very unprofessional. after checking into the room I could not believe my eyes on the condition of the grounds and how unkept every things was. there were some many cob-webs it appeared like no one stayed there for years. when we got to our room it was the saddest thing I ever saw. the comforter and shams were so dirty theynot even good to walk on, the bathroom was ok that was the only new looking something on the property. Ralph took us on a tour showing us different things that were available to the guest. one of them was the bar -b -que area. it was such a mess and it look like the last time somene use it was in 1999 or earlier. then he took us to a what he called a game room, this was a game room / storage room that would have been a accident waiting to happen if children were even to go inside of that place.in my opinion the only good thing around there was the young son, he was as sweet as could be. I am not even able to rate this place because it would be in the negative like negative 10.
