Our first trip to Kenwood in 2006 was amazing. The grounds were breathtaking, the service was personal and friendly, and the room was amazing. Having close friends who enjoy wine with us, we invited them to return with us. Kenwood was the only place we looked at. A trip to Sonoma/Napa IS Kenwood to us. We were so disappointed (and frankly embarrassed) when we arrived. The lobby was unattended for some time (although a glass of wine WAS poured to welcome us, thank you). The real disappointment was in the rooms. Not decorated anything like the one in our previous stay (actually hardly decorated at all) but filthy. The carpet was so dirty that we wouldn't take our shoes off. It appeared to be so old and worn that it was starting to come up in places and was torn in others. The furniture was terribly worn. The chairs went from being a place I would sit and read by the fire to something I would use to start one. The bathroom was another case of worn-down and disappointing. So sad after our previous visit as we have since modelled our own bathroom after the one in the Kenwood room. We were heartbroken, and could tell our friends were equally disappointed after our build-up of how amazing it was at Kenwood.
I hate even writing this because we love Kenwood so much and I don't want others to miss the stay we had our first time. It's like telling a good friend that you don't like them anymore. You're hoping it shocks them into changing. And admittedly it's been over a year since our visit, so maybe things have picked back up. I sure hope so because I REALLY don't want to stay anywhere else next time we're there.
