“Lovely Lodge and Cottages”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

Our family has been coming to this lodge every year for many years now. It has always been a great gathering place for our group and the accomodations and common areas are very comfortable with luxury linens and large enough common areas for a number of people but still with a homey feel. There is a appetizer hour with a complimentary glass of wine that is sure to tickle you fancy around the large stone fireplace. Outdoors is a great mix of nature and within walking distance to the little town of Julian. The grounds are hilly and perhaps not an easy trek for the elderly but you will find handicapped accomodations within the lodge. You'll also find the working staff to be friendly and eager to help you.
Finally, in an era of a poor economy, this may be considered quite pricey. There are other inns in town that are clean, and just around the corner from shopping.

Room Tip: The least expensive room is the best value. We have stayed in others and find them to be about the s...

The staff were friendly and helpful. The lodge was inviting and dining room overlooking mountain area had a great view. Our dinner was included with the 2 night stay. Soup (barley with apricot) was outstanding and I would love the recipe. The salad was fresh, dressing a little bitter. Fresh just baked rolls were actually boring. My entree (beef) was tender and side dishes tasty but tiny. A nice, but also very small dessert was included. We finished the meal with a great cup of coffee. The service was great as was the ambience . We had a wonderful cottage room (Black Gilflower) that appointed nicely and very comfy. We especially enjoyed the quiet time just sitting out on the little porch reading and watching the marvelous bird display. We loved the seclusion of the cottage, which also meant we had to hike up the hill for meals. All in all it was a wonderful visit and we would go back, especially if this time I can find a bargin. A special treat, as we were leaving we had the opportunity to see the famous wild turkeys.

Room Tip: Be aware that some of the cottages are at bottom of the hill

We found a LivingSocial.com package for $249 (Sunday to Thursday) for 2 nights with $25 credit for a 4 course meal in a Lodge Room. This is about 1/2 the normal rate, and we have always wanted to try the Orchard Hill Country Inn in Julian. It did not disappoint. The room was small but quaint. We enjoyed staying in the Lodge instead of the outlaying buildings. The weather in November makes this more desirable, and the roaring fire in the great room, breakfast/dinner room, and game room make it very convenient. Everyone was very friendly including the other guests that we met over wine/beer and cheese each afternoon from 4-5:30pm. The grounds are very inviting although more enjoyable when not cold or raining. The 4-course dinner was very good but we probably wouldn't do it again. Breakfasts were excellent. Beds were comfortable.

Room Tip: Lodge rooms are smaller, but very convenient, quaint and less expensive.

I had heard of this property for years, so we decided to go visit. Charming country Inn within walking distance of the small town. Our room was in one of the outer buildings which house three to four guest rooms each. It was an easy walk up the hill to the main Lodge. Breakfast was ncluded, as were hors d'oeuvres and 2 glasses of wine or beer in the late afternoon. We had dinner at the Inn one evening and it was quite good as well.A very nice experience---will be going back!

The perfect 2-day getaway from San Diego ! This was our 3rd or 4th visit.
Classy yet comfortable; the owners and staff friendly and helpful.
The rooms are charming, each one different, with nice touches like a jar of homemade oatmeal cookies !
The setting feels rural, yet is only a couple of blocks from the little town of Julian. The turning Fall leaves added a splash of color.
Breakfast included is bountiful and tasty... Wine and cheese "happy hour" is a nice treat.
Dinner is served several nights a week and is very good, if not great. But the view from the dining tables, over the trees at sunset, is priceless.
Also enjoyed a dinner at Jeremy's On The Hill, a short drive away.
We look forward to returning !

Room Tip: The cottages are charming, with more room, fridge, fireplaces and sitting areas. While the Lodge ro...

First time at the Orchard Hill Country Inn and we were not disappointed. We had a lovely dinner at the hotel one of the nights. The breakfast was included in our stay and it was really good. Julian is a very small town but you can find some wineries in the area. The downtown area has all kinds of little shops. The staff at the hotel was so friendly and very nice. They made you feel as if you were a guest in someone's home. The owners came by at dinner time to greet us.

Orchard Hill Country Inn is a first-class, complete full-service destination in Julian. A quick walk to town is fun, but it’s wonderful to just spend the entire day on the premises.

Brought my mother here in July and stayed in two of the Lodge rooms, which were so lovely, that I felt compelled to return in October. For a week. My fiancé could not make it, but I went anyway.

Stayed in the Sweet Bough cottage. The mattress on the bed is extremely supportive and comfortable. Had deep, restful sleep each night. Bed linens are crisp and inviting, with lots of fluffy pillows. Quilts are modern contemporary and warm. I travel with a sound machine that makes background white noise, so I didn’t hear any of the street noise, etc. that other guests were mentioning in other reviews.

The fireplace between the bed and the Jacuzzi tub is so novel! The towels are thick, thirsty and top of the line. Everything is very clean and well-cared for. Decor is very pleasant and updated. Fresh paint, new tasteful tile around the fireplace, cheerful wallpaper, wood trim, comfy chairs. Even the clothes hangers are premium.

The cottage has a nice flat-screen TV, a music CD player, and a VHS/DVD player.

One thing, the tile around the tub could use a little scrubbing, and the caulk could be replaced. But then again, doesn’t everybody’s?

Outside the cottage door, there is a nice covered outdoor seating area with a table and cushioned chairs. The vast view of the town and mountains is highlighted by the quaint church steeple in the distance.

In Julian, the spring-fed water is clean and delicious. That is why another reviewer did not see wasteful disposable water bottles. Just drink the water straight out of the tap! What a concept for us city-slickers! The staff is happy to provide ice.

Evening hors d’oeuvres are tasty. Guests are offered a nice choice of beverages in a lobby great room - very appealing for evening chats around the crackling wood fire.

The breakfast is hearty and scrumptious, and guests whisper in the stunning dining room. As for a below review about not having enough eggs, I’m sure if a guest made a reasonable request, the chef could whip up extra eggs. The Inn prides itself on accommodating guests’ special dietary needs. In addition to putting dietary requests on the reservation form, be sure to remind the server.

The dinners are top-notch, prepared by a fabulous gourmet chef. Each four-course dinner is hearty soup, crisp salad, warm homemade rolls with soft butter, choice of an entree, and dessert. The dining room at sunset is unbelievable.

The staff provides special attention to detail. They go out of their way to make sure everything is to satisfaction. You can’t beat this service. Jonathon, Susan, Linda, Becky, and all the rest take excellent care of guests. The owners, Pat and Darrell, go out of their way to be gracious.

I had a little medical issue one evening, and Pat sat with me (probably while her dinner went cold) until I was better, and escorted me back to the cottage. I don’t think you can find more caring people anywhere.

Memories include sitting in the comfy robe on the hammock at sunrise, sipping coffee, watching the comical stellar jays and busy hummingbirds. In the late afternoon, out come rafters of wild turkeys, clucking and sipping water from the stream. At night, the stars sparkle with comets for making wishes. As if anything there is anything else to wish for.

Such a magical, magnificent destination. Thank you, Pat and Darrell!

Room Tip: Choose the Sweet Bough cottage for a secluded getaway. Or, Lodge 6 has a nice balcony, and convenie...
