“Three times a winner!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

Our third visit to the Julian Hotel was spectacular! Upon arrival we couldn't wait to choose which room to spend the night, each has its own special decor and we love them all. Afternoon tea and an evening game of Clue with longtime friends in the parlor made for a special day. In the morning we enjoyed the homemade granola and Eggs Florentine. After breakfast we toured all the Julian bakeries in search of the perfect apple pie. Yum! We will be returning for our fourth visit soon!

Had a lovely stay at the Julian Hotel at the start of Thanksgiving week. This is the perfect place to get away and relax! The town of Julian and the hotel were all decked out for the holidays and set a lovely tone for relaxing. The room was perfect... Clean, cozy, and beautifully decorated. I have stayed here in the heat of summer and the room was pleasantly cool... And now as the cold weather approaches it was very comfortable as well. Close to great hiking, fun shops, good restaurants! Staff was helpful, warm and welcoming and the breakfasts and afternoon tea times were great. The wifi worked beautifully and thank goodness there are no TVs in this classy historical setting!

Room Tip: They are all lovely!

My mom and I recently stated at the Julian Gold Rush Hotel. I got it through a Groupon as my mom needed a break from her everyday hectic life dealing with her parents who both have dementia. I didn't have too high expectations but all I can say is WOW what a delightful treat the excursion to Julian was. We try to go up every year for a day visit. I had never stayed anywhere in town. If you have the choice , I would say to try this place. All of the innkeepers were so nice and friendly. The minute you walk in you are welcomed with a warm smile and greeting. We made it in time for the afternoon tea. So nice! The cider was amazing. All of the treats served with the cider were delicious. We had a choice of 5 different rooms. We stayed in room #3. It definitely was the best choice. The bed was super comfortable. The room is a little cold but you get used to it right away. There are no shortage of blankets/quilts so you do no have to worry about getting cold while you sleep. I really liked how the sink is separate from the toilet and shower. They are on opposite sides of the room. Some people write that the rooms are small and they are but you adjust and it is fine. I wouldn't change the cozy feeling for anything. The only bad thing about the room is that it is above the front door so you have people slamming it when they come and go if they are not conscientious. But after 9pm, everyone is inside anyway so it may just wake you in the morning. Downstairs there are no shortage of places to sit and talk. You can snuggle next to numerous stoves/ fireplaces. There are no TVs but you don't need them. I went to Julian to have a nice break and slow down from normal life. Make sure not to miss the breakfast in the morning. I thought it was going to be a small buffet type but I was surprised again. They seat you as they do in a restaurant and bring you the breakfast piping hot. We had granola, fresh fruit, Spanish florentine quiche and raisin bread. Very tasty! You would be missing out if you did not try the beautiful and inviting B&B.

The old Julian Hotel is now a bed and breakfast, and has lots of character and charm. You can step back in time, no cell phones allowed in the dining area, period furnishings all over, and hosts that are both friendly and knowledgeable about the hotel's extensive history. You might even get a visit from the ghost of the original owner, who still roams the upstairs hallways. We frequently use this as a quick two-day mini-vacation, not far from San Diego. Plenty of interesting shops and good restuarants in the town, and winter snow is always a draw.

Julian is a fun, festive town. There's not a ton to do but it's a great weekend trip, and the Julian Gold Rush Hotel is a convenient base - walkable to restaurants, etc.

The hotel itself is old, but in a with-character way. To some, the rooms may seem smallish, perhaps even cramped but it seemed to be in keeping with the authentic style and architecture of the time (gold rush) - and that was fun. The room was very comfortable, clean, and charming. We had a first floor room which was great because it has it's own private entrance as well as a pseudo sitting area directly in front of it (as do the other first floor rooms I saw). Even though the room faced the main street, as the town is pretty sleepy to begin with, there were no issues with noise.

On a side note, the wi-fi was present but dreadfully slow and sporadic. Could have just been my laptop.

Service was very friendly. Breakfast was good as far as these things go - but I'm not a big B&B kind of person to begin with, so keep that in mind. And for those like me, this really is more of a hotel than a B&B, so have no fear of having your own privacy and what not, as us misanthropes often concern themselves with.

Restaurants were walkable, as were a few sights like the town hall, museum, and the cemetery -which is definitely worth a walk through. Apple orchards are all within easy driving distance, as was the night sky tour at the observer's inn (www.observersinn.com/) which was lots of fun for an evening.

Bottom line: Would go again if visiting Julian. Some reviews seemed to find the price a bit high for what you get, but I thought it was very fair.

Room Tip: Look on their website for "Web Specials" which get a better rate but you have to call and...

This one of the bed and breakfasts that charges a great price for the quality you receive. We had a lovely stay! It's one of the original Julian buildings and is located downtown. Like pretty much everywhere, there's no assigned parking, and we had to stay at least 2 nights to get a room. If you get there at night, the town quickly dies down and there's plenty of parking nearby. The location can't be beat. Not that Julian is big, but this is in the perfect spot-pretty much in the town center. We also liked that, unlike most bed and breakfasts, if you got a first floor room or cottage, you didn't have to walk through common areas to get to your room. (I think you do have to walk through common areas to get to the second floor rooms). We had a first floor room, so we could access our room from the outside, and then we had a separate key to get into the common room for breakfast. The rooms themselves are cozy and make you feel literally like you've gone back in time. They are simple yet nicely decorated. And no, there's not a tv, but it would have felt wrong to have one. They did have free wifi in the rooms. We had an air-conditioner and thermo-stat-controlled heater. We had a shower vice bath, but some rooms do have baths. We didn't mind. The bed had a wrought-iron frame, and it was so comfy. We had plenty of pillows and blankets.
The breakfast was amazing. They have coffee, tea, orange juice, water, and hot chocolate (perhaps more). It starts off with their home-made granola. I'm not much of a granola fan, but it was quite good. The second course was different both days. The first day we had baked apples over french toast and plenty of fruit. The second day we had yogurt, more delicious fruit, an egg polenta bake with hollandaise sauce, and scrumptious raisin-nut bread. Just fantastic! All the inn-keepers were so friendly. We got hiking recommendations, too. We never made it to afternoon tea, but that's available, too.

Just note the showerhead may be inconvenient for taller individuals. Also, if you have to iron clothes, you will need to bring them to the common area, and iron them there.

Room Tip: Book a first floor room or cottage if you want to have access to your room from the outside.

My husband and I recently stayed here for 2 nights. We had a nice time, though weren't in the room too much to be honest. The hotel is located right in the heart of town. Parking is just street parking, which proved a little interesting over the busy weekend. The breakfast, as others have stated, was delicious, though I am not sure they were ready for the place being fully booked, since we had to wait a little while to eat the first morning. The homemade granola made up for it though. The room was very clean, but small (we were in room 10) with way too much furniture. The staff were super-friendly and helped us out with several questions about the local area and good hikes. All in all, we had a nice time there. The service definitely impressed us.
