$20 for a burger and a shake. And not even a great burger.
OK, so Julian is a tourist trap. Famed for the local apple pie and cider, and its scenic main street, the town is well worth a visit. And Miner's Diner is right at the main crossing - impressive looking and impossible to miss. It's a fabulous building, with its old-time Soda Fountain fittings. But the food is below average in quality, and above average in price.
Service is fast and friendly, and they have a novel way of finding you once your order is ready - each table is given a playing card, and the wait-staff shout the card when they bring your food - sometimes incredibly loudly.
The food itself is nothing special: the burger was about average for a fast food place, and the fries were bland. The chocolate malt shake was, however, very good. The price, however, for what you get is eye-watering. As a British tourist, I am consistently impressed with the quality and value of US eating establishments. But Miner's Diner felt like it was charging for its location and decor just a little too much - and the food wasn't up to the same standard as the prices.
The fact that the place was packed, and the review here show that not everyone agrees with me. But I'm sure you can get more for less - though possibly not nearby, since this is a very touristy part of the world. But Julian certainly has more than its fair share of eating places - and I'd definitely try another before the Miner's Diner next time I'm in town.
