“What a dump”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2008

We were traveling to Julian for a friends wedding and apparently it was a busy weekend and most places required a two night stay (we only wanted one night)... and the two places that would allow for a one night stay were the Julian Lodge and some gross hostel type of place where you had a communal bathroom (YUCK.)

So with no other option, we booked the Julian Lodge for a Saturday night at $130.

Look, I'm not some hoity toity 5-star only type of person but if we're going to be shelling out $130 I would think they would at least change the freakin' sheets?! Which I didn't realize until we came back after the wedding at 12:30a- I pulled back the covers and saw my pillow with blond AND brown hair on it, and some gross yellowish stain on the bottom sheet.

What would any normal human do? Call housekeeping right? Oh no, here at the Julian Lodge, you don't get a phone in your room. Yeah, you heard me, no phone in your room. I slept on towels.

Not to mention our room had stains on the carpet, a lamp with a tattered and ripped lamp shade, no shampoo, conditioner or lotion and a busted old heating machine.

They call themselves a B&B- mind you "breakfast" is served from 7:30am - 8:45am. I couldn't even bring myself to go considering the quality of the room... I didn't even want to know what "breakfast" looked like.

Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else if at all possible.

  • Liked — If I was forced to actually pick something good about this place- I would say the location.
  • Disliked — Everything. Dirty, Weird Staff, Noisy, No Phones, Expensive for the quality

The Julian Lodge is a perfectly adequate and well located motel in the heart of Julian. It is easy to walk to the shops and restaurants, and is quiet enough for most everyone. But is it a Bed and Breakfast, as it bills itself on its website? No -- it's an ordinary 1960's motel dressed up with antique-type furnishings in the rooms and in the lobby/breakfast room. (How many cozy B & B's have a meeting room or a breakfast room for 30? This one does.)

The breakfast was a standard motel-type breakfast and nothing like the good, small, owner-run B & B's where guests are served a hot, tasty, and nutritious meal. At the Julian Lodge it is all starch: a few cereals, defrosted/bland frozen pancakes and waffles, supermarket-type bread, and little else. If you are looking for a balanced meal with protein and fiber, bring your own or go elsewhere.

If the Julian Lodge billed itself more accurately as the motel it used to be (and truly still is), and charged rates accordingly, it would be perfectly adequate. But if you are looking for quaintness or character, go elsewhere.

Visited Julian on recommendation - they raved about the apple pies. We found the apple pies to be - well, just apple pies. Nothing special. Stayed overnight at the Julian Lodge, but were not terribly impressed. We found it to be very basic and a bit shabby, and certainly not terribly clean. It seemed to us that the breakfast buffet was left out permanently, and some of it smelled a bit stale - the dining room smelt rather stuffy, too.
I know you pay through the nose a bit for accommodation in Julian, but I do feel that this hotel was far from being good value for money.

The hotel was the last one available for our weekend trip to Julian, but we were happy with it. It is not fancy, and it is not crummy either. The breakfast room is nice and pretty with free cereal, bagels, coffee, etc. The Julian Hotel is right on Main Street which is very busy. I liked that the Lodge is half a block from the hussle and bussle and a little quieter. Julian is a nice place to visit. We recommend you hike or drive West on C street from the Lodge and visit the mines there. They have a one-hour tour through a hard rock mine for $10.00 that was the highlight of our trip. Overall the Julian Lodge was a friendly, clean, well-functioning place to stay...nothing fancy.

This hotel was acceptable, but not great. The rooms were very small, and overpriced at $125 (weekend). The rooms "tried" to be quaint & cute, but the furniture was rickety and missing some pieces. The beds were nothing better than standard hotel beds and the linens were nice, but well worn. The breakfast was fairly simple continental fare. We found the hotel staff very helpful on the phone, but cold and bitter in person.
