“Very special place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2011

We spent a night at this very beautiful place last week and it was absolutely perfect. The owner, Blake, has built the place himself over eight years and you can tell how much thought, effort and talent has gone into it. It is an architectural delight and very comfortable.

Situated moments away from the Joshua Tree National Park, it is perfectly located for a trip to this fantastic place, but what a treat to come back to a room so beautiful at the end of a day's hiking.

He has really thought of everything and made us very welcome. We have a teenage son and a six-year-old girl and we were with another family with a young son and we all found it to be perfect.

Don't come if you want cheesy Palm Springs, or a corporate style hotel. But for a beautifully designed retreat in the desert, you're at the right place.

Incidentally, heating, kitchen, internet, and fantastic steam showers all worked perfectly.

No swimming pool, but I believe Blake is planning to have one by July.

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely. 2 suites have kitchens.

I spent three nights at Mojave Sands with my Mom while exploring Joshua Tree. Our room (one of 2 suites), was beautifully designed, spacious and had the most exquisite steam shower I've ever experienced. The combination of wood and stone architecture with found and new art pieces was pleasing to the eye and senses. We enjoyed our stay immensely. That being said, we were surprised that the room was not serviced during out 3 day stay, and that there were very few light sources in the room - but considering that this hotel is still evolving we just rolled with it and had a great time.

A very good friend runs the Marfa film festival and with a pending earthquake and nuclear radiation impending we ( four women (one 12 year old) myself and four dogs) went out to the Mojave Sands to escape LA for a couple nights. We arrived late but as the saying goes better late than never as the Mojave Sands is truly an oasis.
I say elemental as the motel which used to be a run down home for the down and out has been completely transformed by it's new owner. The transformation is entirely elemental as Mojave Sands feels as though its every facet has been pored over and re-imagined with either exposed rock (sand, stone and concrete), metal (steel and bronze) or wood (reclaimed cedar, bamboo in various forms and all manner of found construction wood). Every part, every surface has a patina that is earned and the place has only been open for four months now.
The room we stayed in was very well equipped, Gaggenau kitchen appliances, steam shower, giant bed and a room full of 50's rock and roll with a tube powered record player made the two days a very enjoyable stay.
I would highly recommend this motel to anyone I know as it represents the familiarity and sublime design aesthetic that I have seen in places like ryokan in Japan and cabins in and around the High Sierras.
All in all I'd go back in a heartbeat. This place was and is great.

Since staying at Mojave Sands I have recommended it to everyone I know who's planning a trip to Joshua Tree. Not only is it exceptionally comfortable, with all the necessaries like luxuriously hot showers (even a steam shower in one room), supremely comfortable beds, adjustable heating / air conditioning etc - but it is a delight to stay in because everything is so beautifully designed and well thought out. It seems like no expense has been spared, and when my partner and I woke up in the mornings to our (interior) view of smooth polished concrete floors, neutral-coloured linen drapes over the windows, beautiful modernist furniture (our suite had an original Eames lounge chair, a vintage record player, and industrial-style lamps), it was hard to tear ourselves away in order to go and explore the desert. This motel is not to be missed!

It is not your usual Motel, but an ongoing work of art. The owner has been working on it for about 8 Years, and it shows. Great love to details like a collection of modernist furniture and little things.

Very Modern and simply rustic at the same time, the owner Blake takes pride in his establishment and is there personally to see to your needs. The place is small, only 5 rooms, it would be perfect to take over for a group, and I can imagine film crews and photo shoots taking over the place on a regular basis.

A perfect, mellow spot for exploring the Tree.

We stayed here Feb 2, 2011 in Suite 1. This little gem of a "motel" is on its way to joining the league of The Small Luxury Hotels of the World, without the room service. The Mojave Sands is great blend of stark modernism and homey, quirky, kitch. It is a work in progress. It is a creative blend of the aesthetic and ascetic. I had a lot of fun playing old records on a record player. I hadn't done that in 20 years! The steam/shower bath is a wow touch. There is a serenity in the compound enclosure enhanced by oriental statues, a gigantic log table, fountains, and real low key spots to relax. The bed was incredible. What a great night's sleep. Book a stay. It's a very memorable experience.
