“Beautiful location, friendly staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Timbercove Inn in August 2012. The inn is in a remote and beautiful part of the California coast north of Jenner in California. Our room was gorgeous with spectacular view of the rocky coast. The staff at the inn were extremely friendly and helpful. We were given very good advice about wineries to visit by Keith Hill, the manager. The Inn restaurant and bar are great. We will definitely visit again. The Timbercove Inn is a wonderful place.

The Timber Cove Inn isn't actually in Jenner, it's about a half hour further up Highway 1. The spectacular drive to reach it was definitely part of the fun for me! A few gentle walks around the grounds were also very pleasant and I've never had such a gorgeous view from a hotel gym room. Wifi was fast and effective, but I doubt if you were in one of the rooms furthest from the main building that it'd be as good.

The restaurant and bar staff are friendly and helpful. Food was pretty good or excellent each time. Great for a quality short getaway, but definitely not a spot for local exploration. Just get there and stay there, it's worth some chill time.

Dear Ali B,

Good point about our Jenner address - we are 14 gorgeous miles on Pacific Highway 1 north of town - and we try to tell as many guests as possible for obvious reasons.

I've said on more than one occasion when commenting on our fitness room: "if you can find a better view from an elliptical machine in the world, you let me know!"

Thanks for the review!

We stayed at Timber Cove Inn in November 2012. The inn is located about 30 minutes north of Jenner, CA on Highway 1. The road there is super twisty and winding, with killer ocean views. The inn itself is right off the highway and the location is pretty spectacular. Right on a cliff over the ocean. Everywhere you look is a great view, unless you get one of the few rooms that overlook the parking lot. The lounge/bar/restaurant area is really nice, kind of a rustic hunting lodge feel with lots of places to sit and drink/snack. Big fireplace in front with couches around it. Food at the inn is great - no complaints about anything, and we tried a lot of the menu. Drinks are good, and prices for everything are pretty reasonable. Staff is friendly and attentive in general. Outside there are several walking trails, a giant weird totem pole with a hand on top (?), lots of flowers and birds, trees etc. And a big outdoor firepit with chairs around it where you can sit and have a few drinks in the evening. There is almost nothing within a 20 minute drive of the inn. Literally, you have Fort Ross (interesting, worth a couple hours visit) about 10 minutes south on Highway 1, the Fort Ross winery about 15-20 minutes away on Myers Grade Road (also worth a visit, really pretty spot), and Salt Point Park, which is really just a campground and some walking trails through grass, about 15 minutes north on Highway 1. That is it. So plan on being at the inn pretty much exclusively and bring whatever you need with you. No town or stores. No cell service either, for any carrier (this might be good or bad depending on what you want). Wifi is free, but weak and really only works well in and near the lounge area. Rooms are all over the map - some have big central fireplaces, some have spiral staircases and loft beds, some have hot tubs, some have better views than others - ask ahead and find out what you're getting. One thing they all have in common is that they need real updating. Walls are super thin - and I'm not someone who usually even notices. You will hear everything that is happening around you. Beds are comfortable. Furnishings are getting pretty old. Hot water may be hit and miss. There is a fitness center, which no one seems to use. It's not bad. The best part of this place is definitely the location and the food, so take advantage of that. Eat, drink, relax and enjoy the nature. I think that's pretty much what the Timber Cove Inn is about.

Room Tip: They really are all different so make sure you ask exactly what you're getting.

We traveled to the Timber Cove Inn (Cove) for a romantic weekend getaway and it was great! We drove from Nevada, so it was a bit of a drive but once you approach Highway One; it is well worth it! We stopped along the way, took in the fresh smell of the ocean breeze and once we arrived in the town of Jenner, there were very few services. So, if you need milk and eggs, there's no grocery store in sight, so come prepared with whatever you think that you may need during your stay. Also, there are no phones in the rooms and cell phone reception is poor (unless you stand about 50 feet from the totem pole on the grounds behind a rock). For some, these may be inconveniences but for others it may be a welcome to be "unplugged" for a weekend.

The Cove is a rustic inn with a weathered exterior which was probably last remodeled in the 60's. Again, depending upon your personal tastes, you may either consider a 60's exterior quaint or you could also view it as deferred maintenance. The grounds, however, are beautifully manicured with a 93-foot totem pole, short hiking trails of approximately a mile or two which snake around the perimeter of the property. The trails are great for a romantic stroll after dinner or a solitary walk to enjoy the scenery. We took full advantage of the trails and even ventured out to the rocks due to the low tide; it was gorgeous! We highly recommend the trails!

Upon arrival at the Cove, we received a warm welcome from the front desk staff. The staff were very pleasant and they offered to assist us in every way possible. The Cove is fairly small with only a couple of rooms so the inn has very few vacant rooms; so book and arrive early to get the best rooms. We also recommend that travelers compare room rates offered on the Cove's website with travel wholesalers such as Expedia. We found that the Cove offered prices that were more competitive than Expedia or other on-line travel companies, so it's best to compare prices and consider booking directly with the Cove. Also, it’s more economical and convenient to book package deals at the Cove if you don’t plan to venture out in search of a meal. This will enable you to get a few extras, pre-pay for the room/meals (both of which are fairly expensive at the Cove) and take the stress out of looking for food!

As far as the room selections, the average room rate is fairly expensive, so we recommend the suites. Reason being, if you are going to splurge and pay more, then you should try to get a few more extras than the standard room. The suites offer king size beds, more square footage, spa tubs, fireplaces, quieter locations and unrestricted views of the ocean. The one-bedroom suite is the best room because it’s as if you are separated from the rest of the rooms and perched on top of a rock which appears inches away from the Cove’s giant, signature, 93-foot totem pole. The other, non-suite rooms are cute lofts with spiral staircases which lead you to a second floor bedroom. But, be careful using the stairs because many of the staircase rails appear loose. The rooms are very small with minimal sitting areas and the walls are not insulated, so be careful not to say something which you wouldn’t mind hearing repeated in the downstairs dining area! Also, rooms with an ocean view do provide beautiful views of the ocean but a guest campfire is staged each night at the base of these rooms. Guests usually party into the wee hours of the morning by this fire pit, so if you must have an ocean view room, then we recommend that you request a room from the opposite end of the outdoor dining and campfire areas to ensure that you get a good night’s rest! Pass on the forest view rooms also unless you want a view of the parking lot!

Once we arrived at the Cove, we remained at the location as it was beautiful, but remote. The Cove felt similar to being on the “Survivor”, reality show where a few people are inhabiting a beautiful, remote location, but you have to make your own fun and find your own food etc.! The Cove is so far removed from town that all guests usually eat all their meals at the Cove and rely on the Cove for entertainment as well. As for entertainment, check the Cove website as the inn intermittently offers entertainment on Saturdays. The entertainment is comparable to “cruise ship” entertainment where a singer or musician softly sings or plays music to an inattentive audience in the corner of the bar.

If you’re looking for a getaway with beautiful scenery, a few inconveniences and have no need for contact with the outside world for a day or two, then this is the place for you. If, however, you want quiet or enjoy modern conveniences, then the Cove may frustrate you.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, pay a little more and get a suite because you get a few more extras: king siz...

Dear Hottie2013,

It's amazing how many of our guests are a bit on edge regarding the lack of cell service when they first arrive, but in almost every case they will comment to me that going without it for a few days was a blessing! I can't argue with your suggestion to upgrade to a suite or deluxe room. My favorite part of your review, however, was in your praise for our staff - thank you. Despite the amazing setting and the heritage of the property, our best asset is our people!

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the Timber Cove Inn!

It’s on 20 gorgeous oceanfront acres with nice hiking trails. The Inn’s architecture and landscaping is beautiful. We are so glad we stayed there during our honeymoon. It was a very enjoyable and memorable experience. We look forward to staying there again.

My husband and I recently visited Timber Cove Inn to celebrate his 50th birthday. Our goal was to get away from it all -- the bustling city life, work, young kids, emails, cell phone. If that's what you are looking for too, then this is a perfect place to be. It's rustic setting right on the Pacific Ocean provides breathtaking views. Our room faced the cove (as opposed to the ocean), which I highly recommend since you have a view of the cliffs and can hear the waves crashing in. Our room was recently redone and included a fireplace as well as a 2-person soaking tub that had pocket doors enabling a view of the cliffs as well -- a perfect place for a pre- or post-dinner glass of champagne! The lounge/dining area was very relaxing and we enjoyed the blues band which played both nights we stayed. The food at Alexander's was superb -- comparable to the best restaurants Chicago has to offer. The service was a bit slow at times, but that just enabled us to linger further and enjoy the view of the ocean -- never feeling rushed. After dinner, we enjoyed the fire pit outside and met several wonderful people. We definitely will visit again!!

Room Tip: The cove view rooms let you hear the waves crashing against the cliffs

We stayed a few nights at Timber Cove Inn for a family wedding. Although the Inn is obviously more geared towards romantic couples, our family was made to feel welcome and were very well accommodated. The room we stayed in had a beautiful view of the cove and was spacious for our family of five. The room felt more like a bed and breakfast in it's unusual configuration (fireplace in the center of the room, for example), but had everything I would have expected in a standard hotel room. Our dining experiences at the restaurant in the Inn were exceptional. Our children are very familiar with eating in nice restaurants, but the personal attention the waiter gave to them was remarkable. As a parent, I appreciated the range of choices on the children's menu and the chef's easy willingness to create a child-size salmon dish for one of our children. As much as Timber Cove is an exceptional romantic get-away for adults, I would not hesitate to bring my children there again.

Thank you for your review. As you noted, children are a rare treat for us to have as guests of the hotel, so it's something of a "special occasion" when families visit. Our staff is so friendly and warm and I am proud to have them on my team. See you again soon!
