First let me say that I played this course on March 4th, 2013. It was in pretty good shape, but the greens had recently been aerated and sanded on 18 of the 27 holes. The Canyon course was still worth the price. The views, the elevation changes, and the layout were similar to playing a mountain course in Colorado. There were plenty of interesting holes. I played with 2 locals who were very helpful in deciding course strategy, although there were 2 occassions I should not have taken their advice. Anyhow, if you're looking for an interesting course that is relatively inexpensive (for California) and fairly easy to get on, I would recommend Steele Canyon. Weekday rate was under $100 with cart and range balls. Four sets of tees make it enjoyable for any ability. Make sure that one of your 9s is the Canyon course. Meadow course was nice, but not nearly as dramatic. I have never played the Ranch course so cannot comment on it.
