I stayed here for an onsite seminar. If I had known there was a Hilton right next door, I might have chosen to stay there, but not having been to OC for over 10 years, I played it safe and stayed at the Atrium. While the stay wasn't perfect, it was definitely acceptable. The rate was only $119, which by San Francisco standards is *really* inexpensive for the level of amenities provided.
The good - you can walk (about 2.5 blocks total distance) from the airport, through the garage, to the hotel. There is also a free shuttle that you can pick up in the Ground Transportation Center that comes in about 10 minutes. On Sunday, the shuttle took me to the from the South Coast Plaza shopping center. I had to wait 15 on my return trip. If you get unlucky and the shuttle has just left for the airport, the wait can be 25 minutes, but during a non peak travel season, my experience was a long wait wasn't the usual. For once, I did not have to rent a car, so I can't address the parking issues.
The staff were all very polite and clearly trying very hard to provide good service, esp., the front desk and bell man service. If you look at Trip advisor, alot of the complaints have to do with bad service, so on this charateristic, the Atrium gets 5 stars.
The beds were firm mattresses, which I really like and room was huge. I have stayed in ALOT of Hilton Garden Inns and although they are very nicely appointed with granite counters, microwaves and mini frig, the rooms are getting smaller and smaller with each new one they build.
The bad - the restaurant service was slow and a few servers were actually surly. The food is good, though, but with all the local choices available, it is not surprising to me that the restaurant is rarely busy. But in spite of only 3 tables being occupied, it is still very slow. Don't eat here if you need to get out quickly.
The reservation system needs to be overhauled. They had problems finding my reservations upon check in and when I made my reservation there was problems finding my group in the system. They handled it pleasantly but check in took over 15 minutes.
I would guess the Atrium was built in the late 60's or early 70's. It has been completely revamped since then and although not luxurious, it is definitely a good deal for $119.
My suggestions to the management: put mini frigs in the room. Upgrade the computer system. Look into the restaurant training and management and you'll eliminate 80% of current customer complaints.
