We were surprised and impressed with how clean the hotel was and how friendly the General Manager was (he carried my luggage and gave me a business card with his name, Mike Lian) for a one star hotel, but we were a little frustrated to find out the "free shuttle" to the airport which is only free if you transfer directly from LA Metro Rail Greenline. What is advertised as a "free airport shuttle" is the LA Metro bus "Greenline" that links the LA Metro Rail Green Line to the airport. This airport shuttle is free with proof of a paid transit fair or costs $1.50 per passenger if you are not transferring from the LA Metro public transit system. The shuttle is a very easy 8 minute walk from the hotel, and you don't have to cross any major streets, which would be a hassle with luggage. We felt kind of duped that the shuttle was not actually free, but it still provides a really cheap, fast, and convenient way to get to the airport. Buy a ticket for $1.50 from the fair machine at the bottom of the escalator to the elevated rail before boarding the bus. Despite that frustration, the airport access is easy, fast and cheap and this is one of the best deals on hotels I've every heard of. The general manager greeted us as we arrived at 10:00 PM. He helped carry our luggage to our room and showed us how to unlock the door. He was extremely nice. I was very impressed. The hotel is run by a Chinese family and they seemed to have very good work ethic and at least Mike Lian had excellent hospitality and was very friendly. They asked for a $5.00 deposit for the room key since they re-use the keys. The hotel is older and furnishings are older. For instance, the headboard, floor lamp, nightstands, and chest of drawers were old and showed wear and tear. These were decidedly not high quality furnishings but the mattress was firm and comfortable and the carpet, furnishings, sheets and restoom seemed genuinely clean. My girlfriend is a clean freak and she was very happy with the cleanliness of the room. That was really nice. No funny odors. We were both surprised about the cleanliness. For less than $100 per night we don't expect this kind of clean environment. I definitely would recommend for a one night stay before a flight. I also think this hotel would also be a very good "low cost" way to visit Los Angeles for a few days - particularly for students looking for a deal.
Room Tip: Great room for a one star hotel.
