Description: We specialize in serving authentic Mexican food from secret family recipes, including seafood specialties, plus cocktails from a full bar! Our Chiles Gueritos are a popular local favorite - shrimp stuffed yellow peppers topped with mayo and soy sauce. Our restaurant offers a unique dining experience that's just like eating at home with family and friends. The "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" of the trains passing by on the train tracks behind us is also something you'll never forget! Opened in 1981, El Mexicali Cafe on Indio Blvd. Is one of the longest-running woman-owned eateries in the Coachella Valley. El Mexicali Cafe Day was establishes on March 19 in the City of Indio, and you can typically count on something special at the restaurant to celebrate the occasion.

“Very good food, friendly service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2012

This is a a small restaurant in a rather funky building (which I imagine has some history) next to a railroad track. There are two rooms, one with a counter and a glass front refrigerator cabinet, one without. It is the polar opposite of fancy.

People were friendly. Food was very good, maybe excellent. Best Mexican rice I ever had. Tasty salsa. Nice, smoky flavored shredded chicken. My Pina Colada was made with canned whipped cream (an ingredient I didn't recall from the last one I had). But, it was tasty.

The bathrooms were not spotless, which is the reason I didn't give top marks. Not terrible, but certainly not spotless.

“Thanks Trip Advisor for recommending this Mexican restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2012

We went out of our way to find this little spot and as reported on trip advisor, it was worth it. The stuffed peppers are really different and very good. We only ordered one each as we had a very late lunch and weren't that hungry. The waitress that waited on us was friendly and the place was totally full when we got there around 6 PM but started clearing out before we left. The waitress told us it goes in spirts. It was Saturday, probably one of their busiest nights which might be why the bathrooms we dirty and missing TP and soap. A suggestion....ladies, if you insist upon 'squatting' over the toilet, please have some consideration and clean up the mess that you make! Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest! If we visit Indio again we'll no doubt go back and have a full meal.

“The real thing!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2012

We were drawn to this place by all the good reviews on Trip Advisor for an authentic Mexican place in Indio. We were not dissappointed. Our server was a young lady named Anabel who, it turns out, also made the delicious, authentic Flan. Good value.

“1 = Restaurant; 2 = Cafe II”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2012

They had harp Mexican and movie tunes at 5:30 for dinner. The specialty is the Shrimp Geurero appetizer. The food is second generation; the first generation's store is down Indio Blvd. at Oasis, so take your pick. If you're a train buff, you can get the rumble of the 8 pm long train during dinner. Cool. Who eats out in Indio? We do!

“Best flautas since Mexico”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2012

When we pulled up to this place I was like, hmmmmm. It's a little cafe next to the train tracks in an industrial area. The decor and layout isn't that great either. But the waitress was friendly and the checken flautas were the best I've had outside of Mexico.

Parking: plenty
Bathrooms: clean, outside on side of bldg
Service: quick
Decor: eh
Food: great
Cost: cheap

Oh, and don't be alarmed when the bldg shakes, it's just the trains!
