“Surreal but good experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2012

The Hyatt appears to be slightly older than other resorts in the area and architecturally may seem less grand, especially compared to its neighbor, the Renaissance Esmeralda. However, we found the scale and ambience of the Hyatt to be just fine. The range of room rates seemed reasonable, and we received good value overall.

Indian Wells and the Palm Springs area in general were very quiet during our December pre-Christmas visit, and the Hyatt Grand Champion reflected that by having relatively few guests. Partly cloudy and unseasonably cool temperatures probably did not help. This made our three night stay at the Hyatt rather strange, through no fault of the hotel.

In fact, my partner and I found the facilities and service to be just fine. While the pools and other outdoor facilities were empty most of the time, staff were present to make sure everything was at the ready as if they were anticipating an onslaught of guests at any moment.

POSITIVES:
1) Staff were uniformly friendly, helpful, and available.
2) Spacious rooms and very comfortable bed. Room decor, perhaps, slightly dated.
3) Several pools including one exclusively for adults. Two pools were long enough to swim laps.
4) Very well equipped health club and spa located in a separate building.

DISADVANTAGES:
1) Surprisingly modest public spaces. Some recent remodeling gave the lobby a modern vibe.
2) Inadequate dining options. The main dining room seemed empty during our entire stay (perhaps no surprise), but the bar and lounge were hopping. Most of the time we left the resort for dining options in Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage.
3) Bicycle "rentals" seemed like a great idea; however, you are merely "signing out" a bike which, for liability reasons, cannot be used off property. Paths around the resort are not that extensive, so a bike ride is almost superfluous. I would have enjoyed truly renting a bike (and paying for it) and being able to cruise around Indian Wells and beyond.

All-in-all a good visit and we will most likely return.

Move past Palm Springs and enjoy the beautiful grounds of the Hyatt Resort in Indian Wells. This place was a great deal on a last minute booking in January. There were so many things we enjoyed: It has 7 pools including an adult pool for a quieter experience, they have a killer pina colada! There are bikes you can rent to ride around the grounds (and sometimes off grounds). The warmer climate made for our morning run and walk more enjoyable, and the gorgeous golf courses make for a beautiful landscape. The resort has a busy bar, with comfy outdoor seating, and when it gets too cool, they have an outdoor fireplace. It is a resort, so you will see resort pricing on the menu. We didn't dine there, but there are so many options with La Quinta and Palm Desert nearby. There appeared to be several families with kids, but the place is very spacious, didn't hear them once.
If you walk or jog, there is a great paved pedestrian walkway along highway 111 lined with fruit trees, and yes, they are edible.

Palm Springs is brimming with resorts and the Hyatt Grand Champions is certainly not the best or most interesting. Indeed, it's architecture and grounds scream "middle of the pack." But it seems to be pretty well managed, and a stay here is likely to be enjoyable. We certainly enjoyed our visit.

My platinum Hyatt Gold Passport membership got me a "pool view" room, and that is certainly more desirable than facing the parking lot. The room was a curious but pleasant "split level," with a couple of steps leading down to a sitting area, additional bed and balcony. Bathrooms are over-sized, as seems to be the custom. Furnishings aren't luxurious, but they are well maintained and the beds very comfortable.

The best rooms here are obviously in the free-standing villas, but there aren't many villa rooms and I assume that you'd need either the highest status in their frequent guest program or a huge boatload of dinero to snag one of them.

The pool area is perhaps a little dated, but it's nicely landscaped and there are several pools and hot tubs to choose from, including an adults-only section. The waterslide is small, but Hyatt has a nice recreation area near the pool with free badminton, foosball and table tennis that compensates for it. They also provide free bicycles to ride around the grounds, which is definitely a nice touch.

Location is good right in the middle of the Coachella Valley resort strip. Plenty of excellent restaurants and shopping nearby. Indeed, we didn't eat at the hotel because there were so many other choices, but I did notice that food prices at the Hyatt didn't seem as awful as they usually are at resorts, with perhaps a 20% mark-up over what you'd typically pay for comparable food.

As is typical of Palm Springs resorts, the hotel charges a ridiculous "resort fee" along with a parking fee. Together, they seem to cost about $30/day (although I got a few bucks off due to my Hyatt status), so include this when comparing rates with other hotels.

Bottomline is that I wouldn't mind returning to the Hyatt, but unless I got a great deal here, I'm not sure why I'd prefer it to other Palm Springs resorts.

This is one of our first choices when visiting the desert. Quiet adult pool, family pool, clean, good location.

The room was nice but a tad dated, clean and very spacious. Common areas were very clean and well maintained. The golf course was one of the most beautiful ever. Nice pools and bikes available to take for a ride. A Starbucks in the lobby and the Restaurant was uniformly good with good service. The con was that the hotel staff was at times a bit daffy. Very nice but daffy.
I was there for a conference and the staff did not give us good information on eating dinner outdoors. We froze. The waiters looked frozen too. I would strongly advise against an outdoor event in January. The desert gets cold at night and so do the guests. They eventually brought some propane heaters but they really needed some tent-like walls if they wanted to keep the heat in.
We came back to our room one night and found a lovely cheese plate and wine - no card, no bill - just the stuff. We are still wondering if this was a gift, a misdelivery, or what?
The housekeeping staff delivered new toiletries each day despite the first set barely used. After several full sets were left they finally stopped adding to the shelf of stuff but it was almost funny..

Room Tip: our package included the internet

Our family rented three of the 2 bedroom Villas for our stay over Christmas and New Years. Coming from North Dakota the warm weather was much appreciated. The resort is top notch. Once we arrived they drove us and our luggage over to the Villas. The butlers then arrived to introduce themselves and walked us through our digs to show off the great amenities. The private patio complete with hot tub and barbecue grill was fantastic. One of the bellman, Carlos, went above and beyond and my grandparents are still talking about the tour he gave them of the grounds. Also spent several days at the adult pool which provided a great chance to relax and catch some rays. My father and I played golf at the Player's course which was a phenomenal course. Overall, this resort had it all and I would not hesitate to stay again.

*One drawback was that you had to pay for parking each day which should already be included in the $23/day resort fee.

Room Tip: If you have a family get a Villa. They are simply fantastic!

This is the 2nd time my family and extended family have met in Palm Springs to enjoy this resort just before Christmas. We will be back. The resort is fabulous, from the spa to the service. We rented a villa and the butlers were wonderful. It is very comfortable and you feel very pampered. Tom, the athletic advisor, is top notch! Can't say enough!

Room Tip: a villa near the gym gives you afternoon sun and mountain views!!
