If you fly into Imperial on the late flight, you can take a taxi to leave the grounds or stay at this motel in the airport parking lot. The rental car facilities on site close at 5:00 PM. So, I walked across the gravel and concrete parking lot and made my way to the Airporter. Rooms are inexpensive and, from the outside, it looks like you get what you pay for.
The lobby is a bit ragtag, but staff were polite and assigned me and my colleague rooms in one of the two buildings. The buildings look a bit like barracks, separated by a pool. Built of cinderblock, the two-story buildings have outdoor walkways and are not aesthetically pleasing in any way. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the door of the room to find it was actually comfortable, clean and attractive. The room was small, but clearly someone had made an effort to make it a nice space. Lighting was good, the bed was comfortable, and I slept well (the air conditioning unit was loud, but my earplugs helped me to cope).
Being a small room, I don’t think I’d want to spend too much time at this motel, but if I take a late flight into Imperial again, I will happily plop myself into a bed at the Airporter. And I’ve learned not to judge a motel by its exterior. Even though it would be nice if they did something about the exterior.
