By world, or even California standards, the sand is fair, the amenities good, the water not notably clean or clear but notably cold year-round, and the beaches spacious and safe. But make no mistake, even including pretty Laguna Beach, this ain't no Ipanema, Bora Bora, the California Central Coast or even the San Diego beaches. Looking inland from the water, the view toward Seal Beach, Huntington Beach or even significant portions of Newport Beach is pretty depressing, punctuated by ancient powerplants and smokestacks and such. This a tourist destination? For surfers, yes. For others, not so sure.
