“loved the Calderwood inn”

The Inn is small with about 7 rooms. The living/ dining room area is charming, rooms standard for B and B and downtown is close by within walking distance. What made the Inn remarkable for us was Julie, she was gracious and very helpful. We enjoyed our stay and would return

Although not our first visit to wine country, it was our first visit to Calderwood Inn--but definitely not our last. We loved it. The inn is so quaint and welcoming. Our hostesses were fabulous at making our visit special. Violet is such a lovely person, displaying genuine warmth & caring for her guests. And Miss Julie--what a splash of personality. She brings a little of Julia Child to life, both in her cooking and her persona. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We think the inn is in a great location and the beds are so comfortable!!! Highly recommend the Calderwood Inn.

Room Tip: Be sure to inquire about ceiling height if you are a tall person. Our first room had a very low cei...

The best-loved historic houses of Sonoma and Napa counties are full of details that many travelers crave: shining floors of clear softwood, wallpaper in countless intricate patterns, glass doorknobs, wide porches.

Calderwood Inn has all these things. It sports door-tassels on every room's doorknob, brass clips for messages beside each bedroom door. It's not overthought or, thank goodness, too Restoration Hardware. Every room downstairs has its own ceiling pattern, so if you're a historian of the influences on Craftsman and Art Deco domestic design, you'll probably strain your neck.

If you are in Healdsburg for food and wine, as most visitors are, you'll find Calderwood Inn a convenient 7 minutes' walk to the center of Healdsburg, almost entirely along a creekside path rather than streetside. The vineyards of Dry Creek, Russian River, and Alexander Valleys are short drives away (Seghesio's winery is just around the corner).

Host Julie's breakfasts rated up with our best meals in town: one morning a cheesy spinach frittata with thick bacon beside it; this morning some light sour-cream pancakes with sweet sausages. Don't fret: when you make your reservation, you can tell her your food predilections or restrictions, and you'll get appropriate morning foodstuffs.

Our room was light and airy, with two dormer windows, a comfortable bed, period desk and dresser, spacious closet, and an immaculate, functional en-suite bathroom (shower).

The porch is wide and sports a swing, there is ample sitting-space under the trees by the fountain, and the street is quiet at night. Parking proved spacious and shaded, even with the Inn about full.

Zippy Wi-Fi throughout - even from the garden.

This was our first stay at the Calderwood and we'll definitely be going back. The service was excellent, the hosts friendly and welcoming, and it felt like home. Breakfasts were great, and Julie and Violet were wonderful. The room was cozy and comfortable, just what we were looking for. The location was great, a short walk to the "action" of Healdsburg--lots of little shops, fine dining, and wine tasting. Definitely a great option for Sonoma wine tasting!

Room Tip: Each room is different. We stayed in the Mazzocco room which had a smallish bedroom area (due to sla...

What a great place to stay. Very Nice! We enjoyed the company of the Inn Keeper as well as the accomodations. Also, a nice location. Not a country setting, but, we walked to dinner and shopping on two occations. It was nice to enjoy, wine and dine without needing to drive or get a taxi.

Room Tip: Look at the rooms on line as each has it's own attrbutes and charm

This was the second time we have stayed at the Calderwood Inn and it will not be the last. The management and staff of this lovely B&B go out of their way to insure that your stay is wonderful and relaxed. Right in the town of Healdsburg and easy walking distance to the square and all the local spots. The rooms are large and comfortable with private baths and all the normal amenities. The common areas are warm and inviting and the morning breakfast is to die for. All the people staying there (a total of 7 rooms) became good friends and the exchange of winery knowledge was very helpful in planning each day's itinerary. Add to this the close proximity of literally 100 of wineries less than 20 minutes away makes this the only choice for us.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room with a shower if you do not like to take baths.

My companion and I stayed recently at the Calderwood Inn for the second time in six months. The gracious hospitality and peaceful surroundings make this a perfect get-away-spot for a couple of days. The histocial Victorian Inn is located a short walk from town and as this was the off season, we received a promotion that included a $70.OO credit for a choice of three restaurants in town. We combined our stay with two rounds of golf at nearby courses. The Inn includes wonderful breakfasts that change daily. The Inn Keeper was very helpful and knowledgable about the local wineries and the history of the Inn. We will definitely return. Linda and Larry

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Known on the California and Sonoma County Landmarks Registry as the John Miller House, this historic Queen Anne Victorian was built in 1902. Miller was a prominent fruit grower, packer and dehydrator in the early 1900s. He was also one of the first to make a commercial business of marketing dehydrated fruit. Among Miller's claims to fame is that he was the first provider to the U.S. Military of dehydrated foods. Known as K-rations during WW I and MREs today, Miller was cited by the military for "feeding the troops during WW I". (1) Miller and his wife were, like many prominent citizens of the community, anxious to furnish their home lavishly. The home is reputed to be the first in Healdsburg with two bathrooms, with indoor plumbing upstairs and downstairs. The noted horticulturist, Luther Burbank, was a good friend and assisted in the design and development of the original landscape at the front of the home, some of which remains today. The large cedar, cypress, and redwood heritage trees were planted by Burbank over 100 years ago. The lush grounds have been accented with rose bushes and numerous flowering shrubs. The same archaeological report from Sonoma State University indicates that some of the first plantings of some of Burbank's new species were planted on the Miller property. Sadly, the location and botanical name of the plants were never recorded. It is unknown if they remain on the property today. The home remained in the Miller family until the late 1930s and was a private residence until the early 1980s when it became a Bed and Breakfast. The inn has undergone extensive restoration over the years. Beautiful hand-silk screened period wall and ceiling papers accent the spacious common areas and some guest rooms. The papers are produced by Bradbury & Bradbury of Benicia, CA and are based on designs of William Morris, a prominent textile designer of the mid- to late 1800s.The formal, yet welcoming rooms include a spacious parlor with fireplace—the perfect place to enjoy the morning paper or a board game on a quiet afternoon. The spacious dining room that seats up to 14 showcases original wainscoting and built-in china cabinet and bench. The large antique table is where guests dine on Calderwood's signature gourmet breakfasts. The covered front porch with its antique wicker furniture and lacquered floor beckons you to enjoy the lush grounds, review the activities of your day or curl up with a good book. The porch is often used by local wineries who frequently co-host our complimentary evening wine hour. All seven guest rooms have private baths. Each room is decorated differently to incorporate an extensive collection of beautiful, yet comfortable period ... more   less
