“Wonderful gem in Healdsburg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

Staying just one night for an event, but had a fabulous time at the Grape Leaf Inn. Speakeasy was so fun, cookies and caramel corn was a nice sweet treat, room was cute, charming and comfortable. Sydney (owner) was welcoming and even prepared me a great breakfast to go for my early departure for a half marathon. I even finished in time to come back and eat the "real" breakfast and take a long hot shower.

I recently stayed at the Grape Leaf Inn as part of a group of 5 couples. The accommodations were very comfortable and the rooms were well decorated and charming. The property provided a number of outdoor seating areas and the afternoon wine tastings with Jackie were a great touch.

I stayed here with my husband for a 2 nights October 9-11th. We arrived late as we had driven up from the Central Coast, and we had no problem getting settled in as the innkeeper had made plans for our after check-in arrival. Breakfast daily was wonderful and included with the stay - we're talking chilled fruit juice shooters to start, followed by a seasonal fruit salad (ours featured oranges with a different preparation on each of the days) and a hearty entree (monte cristos the first day and blueberry pancakes the second). Since breakfast is only 9-10 most of the guests congregate at the same time and we met plenty of nice visitors, many of whom had good advice for wineries in the area. The innkeeper, Kristin, greeted us at breakfast, also. The house is really charming and we enjoyed the common areas. We knew the room would be cozy but it was nicely decorated and had everything we needed for a jumping off spot for local wine tasting! There is also a "speakeasy" on premises, which is a wine tasting bar in the lower/garage level of the B&B where free tastings of the Wilson family wines are offered to guests. Very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: We chose one of the least expensive rooms (which was still on the high end of our budget). These ar...

The staff seems like family and really goes out of their way to make you feel at home. The speakeasy and the wine happy hours was so nice and a great way to kick off the evening. Great location and within walking distance to many great restaurants in the area.

We stayed at the Inn with friends for 4 nights from October 1-5. We enjoyed so many things! Our rooms were very comfortable. We knew they would be small and quaint, but we were spending most of our time out tasting wine. The breakfasts served each morning were unique, delicious and so beautifully presented. It was the perfect way to start our day. We had to leave early two mornings and the staff kindly prepared our breakfast early. In the afternoons we enjoyed gathering in the Speakeasy for wine tasting. Jackie is a perfect host with great stories and advice to help you make the most of your stay. The other guests were friendly and we enjoyed sharing stories about our days in the wine country. The location was perfect for a short walk to the restaurants and shops of Healdsburg. What a charming town!! Finally, I must mention the warm cookies set out for us each day.....so delicious. Thank you for a great stay!

Together with my husband and another couple, I recently had the unfortunate experience of staying at the Healdsburg Grapeleaf Inn. Based upon a guest referral (which upon returning home I learned was from 2007!) and a web site featuring lovely rooms and beautiful gardens, we booked rooms for September 5th – 8th, 2013. In all my years of extensive international travel, I have never been more disappointed with an inn and frustrated with a disengaged innkeeper who clearly didn’t understand the definition of “hospitality”.
Instead of the inn presented online, we found a B&B in the late stages of neglect – not a comfortable stick of furniture, a smell of mold and cat urine so strong you’re slapped upside the face as you begin your climb to the second floor, a large ring of mold around the bathroom ceiling (hence the mold odor!) and a garden adorned with weeds and broken, dirty twig furniture constructed sometime around the turn of the century and not cleaned since. But perhaps worst of all was the inhospitable innkeeper, whose presence was infrequent and lackadaisical.
A couple other highlights of our stay:
• Despite a heat wave with temperatures of 100 degrees, the air conditioning automatically turned off at 10 pm. With a very small second floor room and a first floor room with windows that did not open, we all sweltered the first evening of our stay. The next day I left two messages for the innkeeper requesting the air be left on, but received no return call, nor acknowledgement of a problem. The second evening I learned from the very nice bartender (who in a dingy basement served ONLY samplings from the owner’s wineries) that there might be a couple fans somewhere in the building. So upon returning to the Grape Leaf around 10 p.m. (we stayed out as late as possible), I snooped through closets and closed rooms to find two floor fans, which I snatched for our room and our friends’ room. No one commented upon the presence of these fans the remainder of our visit.
• We were expecting to meet two other couples on Friday September 6th, who also had made reservations to stay at the Grapeleaf. When the innkeeper finally arrived on our second morning (we hung around waiting for her), we mentioned this to her. Given the inn’s deplorable condition, we hoped to confirm their room assignments so we could prepare them. She reviewed the guest list and announced that the couples, in fact, did not have reservations and none where available for the rest of the weekend. When we asked if she could help us find other accommodations for them, her answer was a succinct “no”. (Botched reservations were their lucky break – our friends got to stay somewhere else!)
• The ceilings in our second floor room were so low my husband and me continually banged our heads getting in and out of bed – and I’m only 5’2”!
• There was generally nowhere to put clothes or luggage other than very small, very old armoires in our rooms. Our friends had no choice but to keep their luggage under their bed, schlepping it in and out each time they needed a piece of clothing.
• The televisions – tiny and very old, mounted on top of ugly metal rods that ran up the corner wall – did not work at all. There were no nightstand clocks and the bath products advertised as Aveda were a “Grapeleaf” brand.
• Morning coffee was not available until 7:30 – rather late for east coast visitors. Breakfast was limited from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m., providing no option for folks wanting to head out early morning.
• And perhaps most fitting, our friend had to wander the inn early one morning in search of toilet paper, finally getting some from a locked storage closet when the breakfast waitress arrived to make coffee.

As the Manager/innkeeper for the Grape Leaf Inn in Healdsburg, CA I am always devastated when our Inn receives an unflattering review. Thankfully these kinds of reviews are few and far between. Every review is seriously scrutinized by the proprietors and remedies are immediately offered to make good on legitimate errors, problems and suggestions. Whether good or bad, all reviews are taken to heart and instead of focusing on a few outrageous commenters, we stand by the pattern that emerges from the totality of all reviews – thankfully they are overwhelmingly excellent.

As to the allegations levied from this guest, I can say that at no time during their stay did I hear one word of dissent. I have to believe this all stems from our inability to refund this parties last night due to an early flight out of SFO. When the couple learned they would have to leave the Inn at 5am, they decided try to cancel their last night and stay in San Francisco, by the airport. Our refund policy is clearly stated and available at every level of booking. We are unable to refund a night’s stay with less than 24 hour notice.

Our Inn is an historic, stately, and comfortable bed and breakfast that is a favorite of many famous people from actors to heads of state. I’m sorry the client did not mention the “deplorable conditions”, the cat urine smell (there is a no-pet policy), the dingy basement (a beautiful oak-lined tasting room and cellar, (which can be seen on our website), the weedy garden (it’s at its glorious best), no space for luggage (each room has a large armoire with drawers), and so on.

Had this client voiced any concern regarding their stay, we would have bent-over-backward and jumped-through-hoops to make their experience the best they’ve ever had.

I am proud of this Inn and in my ability as a first-class innkeeper. I am available and love helping people enjoy their Wine Country experience.
