“Lovely inn to relax after a long day wine tasting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012 via mobile

The Grape Leaf Inn is a lovely bed and breakfast nestled on a side street of Healdsberg. You can barely find it as it blends so well with the neighborhood. You are greeted by Christin when you arrive and she gives you the house tour. Anything you need, is at your fingertips. The room we stayed in was in the original part of the inn and was full of character and history. The only negative is it could have used a few updates such as the torn shade in the bathroom and a tv that was so small you could barely see the screen from the bed. In the morning, you are greeted with the most gourmet breakfast ever. A breakfast that will stay in your memory for a long, long, time. Definitely not the usual bacon and eggs!
The inn keepers were very knowledgeable and Richard helped us make a reservation at a winery we never heard of before. Don't forget to visit the Speakeasy. It is really a highlight of the inn with a hidden room behind the bookcases used during prohibition times. Wine tastings are given here on the weekend.
Speaking of wine, Richard has his own vineyard where he produces the most fabulous Zinfindel. You will find a bottle waiting for you in the room. We feel in love with that Zinfindel and we were never even Zinfindel drinkers before! Last, don't forget to try Kaye's cookies. She makes them late in the afternoon and they disappear fast! So incredibly good! We look forward to visiting next year.

Anyone wanting a great stay in Healdsburg, Ca. should stay here. Easy walking distance to the square. Lots of helpful hints from the owners and employees, but not intrusive. Very responsive if you ask.
They know the area very well, and are willing to share the knowledge if you want it.
We are returning for another three nights in two week, and that tells you how well we thought of it.

Room Tip: All the rooms are very nice, and VERY quiet. We had three breakfast, and all were great. Don't...

My husband and I spent three nights at the Grape Leaf Inn and enjoyed our stay immensely. The Inn is perfectly situated on a quiet street just a few blocks from town, the house and rooms were charming and exceptionally clean, the breakfast was truly gourmet, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. When we had an issue after-hours, Richard, the owner of the inn, came over directly and attended to us himself. Unreservedly recommended on all fronts.

Room Tip: Pinot Noir room is probably best suited for a solo traveler due to its cozy size, but it is still co...

A great place to begin the 50th birthday celebration for my sister. We had 4 rooms for 2 nights.
Great breakfast...had to pass on the 2nd one because of an early morning excursion.
We loved hanging out in the parlor and Richard was available to show us the "speakeasy".
Lovely rooms filled with antiques. WAS nice walk into towns for great dinners.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

My wife and I recently stayed for three nights at one of the vineyard villas (Villa Trentandue) operated by the Grape Leaf Inn. We found Grape Leaf Inn after searching online via several B&B referral sites only five weeks prior to visiting. I was extremely pleased that a B&B as highly rated, reputable and well located had available rooms. We didn't even consider hotel options...B&B's seem tailor made for CA wine country.

The online booking process worked well. A visible online available date calendar, accurate pricing and quick confirmation of availability all worked as well as expected. (I don't necessarily take the booking process for granted)

The Inn itself is perfectly located only a couple of blocks from downtown Healdsburg. What isn't abundantly clear on the Inn's website map is that the villas are 7-8 minutes away from the town square. While we loved the idea of a private, larger villa in a vineyard...we just didn't think it would put us out of (safe) walking distance to the town.

We arrived at the Inn to pick up our keys at about 9pm...the innkeeper works until 6pm but left our keys and instructions to operate the electric gate at the door for us. There was no additional 'welcome packet' left with the keys.

The villa itself has been very well maintained. It's clean, freshly painted, well furnished and all the appliances (A/C included) work well. We stayed in the lower level bedroom; the bed was comfy and sheets/towels were all clean and fresh. The bathroom is a little small...but the shower is good sized and has a steamer...which I personally love. The only aesthetic complaints are the worn carpeting and window that lets in the 200W light from across the driveway.

We ate breakfast at the Inn two of the days - the food was delicious...but perhaps short on options. Basic coffee, tea and OJ were offered but no fruit, yogurt, cereal, espresso etc. for those wanting something perhaps lighter than scones, risotto and sausage with a caramel/butter braised pear for breakfast.

The only staff interaction we had was with the innkeeper at breakfast. He was cordial and brief - he didn't make any effort to be welcoming or warm to us...which would accurately sum up my review of the Grape Leaf Inn.

That is to say; the Grape Leaf Inn is a nice place but didn't give us all the personal and warm touches that typically make a B&B so preferable to a hotel. Cookies in the room, warm and friendly staff, visitor's map, local favorite shops/restaurants/vineyards, attention to details...bottle of wine (hello...we're in Sonoma) etc. all seem to be things that other B&B's do to make the visit memorable. Grape Leaf Inn just seemed indifferent to our visit.

Room Tip: Villas aren't walking distance to Healdsburg.

Thank you for your detailed review of your stay with us. As you probably are aware, many travelers heavily rely on previous guests reviews in choosing a destination. Consequently, with respect to guest reviews, we subscribe to the criteria that guest reviews are a most valuable resource to travelers as well as to facility owners, provided they are balanced, fair and tell the complete and ‘story’ of the traveler’s experience with the property they review. Regrettably, your review fails to fit that reasonable criteria, which is quite surprising given the quantity of reviews that you have posted on Trip Advisor. (as of today Trip Advisor indicates that you have posted 30 reviews of various lodgings in over 27 cities around the world).
At the outset, the first noticeable omission we were able to glean from your review was that it was quite obvious that you failed to bring any of the negative items you now mention in your review to any member or our staff or ourselves during your stay. If our staff was inattentive and/or we happened to be not present when you had a need or problem that required addressing, our 7/24 private phone numbers and those of the Inn are clearly placed in our welcome packet of information that we prominently place in each room and our vineyard cottages, along with a listing of local restaurants, the time for our special wine tastings, local attractions and other useful information. We also prominently post our phone numbers along side of the corkboard where you retrieved your keys, directions and hours of our daily three course gourmet breakfast.
Unfortunately, you did not arrive until long after our normal check times had passed which does happen from time to time. Nevertheless, Kristen-our lead concierge- as well as Trevor- our morning concierge- informed us after your checked out, that they inquired if everything was to your liking every morning and afternoon while you were here and you responded that everything was fine and did not make any request of ourselves either in person or by phone. As you seem to be experienced travelers as evidence by your numerous reviews of other facilities, one would think that if you were unhappy with anything about your stay you would have spoken up. As I’m sure you know from your vast experience as ‘seasoned’ travelers, one of the primary tasks of a concierge is to attend to guests needs, but we have yet to find one that can read minds. Thus, we must resort to inquiring of our guests if there are any problems. Had you spoken up with regard to any of the ‘negatives’ you now recite, especially if you arrived during normal hours or called our private phone numbers after that time we would have immediately moved you to an accommodation that was more to your liking and/or promptly addressed your other dissatisfactions.
As far as the location of our vineyard cottages i concerned, our website and video makes it abundantly clear that they are not located on the same premises as the Inn but is a seven minute drive from the Inn. I can only assume that you did not read that part of the website and we disagree that our website does not make it ‘abundantly clear’ where it is located.
We do appreciate your kind words about our three course sit-down breakfast, we always accommodate any request for a substitute meal provided a request is made. Unfortunately, again you did not ask. You also seem to have overlooked our expresso maker, fresh expresso and orange juice in the refrigerator in your cottage.

After reading your review, I personally inspected the carpeting which we newly installed within 6 months from your arrival and I did not see any evidence that it was ‘worn nor any mold on the wallpaper. The light you mention is along the 250 feet from your cottage and has a 50 watt long lasting bulb rather than a 200watt bulb as you suggest and there are shades on the windows in the room you chose to sleep in. And, if that was not satisfactory you certainly could easily have utilized the larger upstairs bedroom overlooking the private outdoor spa, which has a larger king size bed and a more ample bathroom than the second lower bedroom. For that, you did not have to ask.

Last, we are also sorry you did not avail yourselves of our daily fresh baked cookies nor our evening wine tastings in our speakeasy wine bar where we serve a generous variety of fresh, local high-end wines, meet ourselves and the other guests. Since you viewed our video prior to your visit, we also sorry that you apparently overlooked the part showing us pouring our fine wines to our guests and the voiceover explaining our daily wine event.

Cheers and enjoy your travels and please try to be a bit more fair in your evaluations!

Gourmet breakfast a treat. Richard, Kristin and the staff very helpful. Property very weill kept and authentic period decor. Gardens lovely. My wife and I stay and B&B's for vacation travel. We enjoy the unique interaction with other guests and staff. Grape Leaf met our expectations for a B&B near the heart of town. We spent 4 nights at the Grape Leaf and from our experience, good value for the price.

Recently stayed here after seeing the revies and watching the video. Expected a welcoming place but did not find it to be that way at all. The people they have hired as "innkeepers" are just to young and uninvolved. The owner seems to be more interested in making wine then running his inn. You can really tell the difference as the next placed we stayed had such involved and helpful owners. Also the rooms wallpaper was a bit moldy and the breakfast just so heavy and fat filled that we felt bad after eating it. Would not stay here again.

Thank you for writing your review.
We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us.
We try to be responsive to all guests comments, likes and dislikes while they are staying with us. Unfortunately, you failed to express your issue while you were with us. Indeed, our staff checks with all our guests during their stay and our staff on duty while you were here informed us that when asked you specifically told them everything was fine. Had you brought the issues you raised we would have:
A. Changed your room if it did not please you.
B. Served you a substitute breakfast if you were displeased with our regular menu. We are very aware of healthy diets ( we do not serve transfats)..
C. If our staff was inattentive, our private cell number is given to every guest and we are always
available.
Unfortunately, you choose not mention your issues during your stay.
We have treated all the guests the same for the past 14 years and the great majority have
expressed their sincere gratitude for what we provide and their overall experience.
Although you didn't mention it we hope you enjoyed our complimentary bottle of fine wine, our daily fresh made cookies, our daily turn down service and the high end linens, bath amenities and other complimentary items we provide.
