“choose between highway noise and foghorn”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2010

We had a beautiful view of the bay BUT there is a foghorn that sounds every 10 secs 24/7 so choose between a great view and the foghorn noise (windows open since there is no A/C) or a view of Hwy 1 and traffic noise. This hotel would be fabulous if they had A/C so you could close the windows at night. Staff very interested in pleasing their guests - it was wonderful in every other respect.

My daughter surprised me with a overnight stay at the Beach House. From the moment we arrived our stay was incredible. The hotel itself is just beautiful with ocean views that take your breath away. The staff was so welcoming and helpful and always with a smile. We were escorted to our room which was clean and decorated in such a lovely beach house way. So comfy cozy and beautiful!
The amenities were plentiful, everything you could possibly want or need. That evening we were treated to a wine and cheese reception, as well as a yummy continental breakfast in the morning. We were able to choose what we wanted and enjoy it there or take it to our room on the trays provided. The fresh treats were replenished frequently by the extraordinary staff and we even packed some goodies for our morning walk!
During the evening we were able to walk to a nearby eatery and enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. As for sleeping that night, glorious is the word that comes to mind. The ocean breeze and the sound of the harbor fog horn, perfect! Isn't that why we stay at an ocean front hotel anyway, for the total experience.
Our stay was perfection. Thank you to all for making a special memory even more wonderful!

Okay, first no mention on their website that they don't have A/C. Next, no mention that they are within hearing distance of a fog horn that sounds off every 30 seconds (literally, I timed it) day and night. Then there's the fun location of right next to a bar with a walk way that leads right past the hotel. Since you have to have your windows open at night so you don't die of heat stroke, you get to hear the fun sounds of drunken locals. NOT FUN! Oh and a special treat, I went to take a bath and there was grime all inside the tub. The breakfast bar - get there early or plan on having no tray to put your plate and cup on, and also the bottom yuckyness of a picked over fruit plate. Bring sleeping pills and cleaning supplies and you should have a fun time. I felt it was a coomplete waste of $700 for 2 nights of no sleep. I will not be returning.

When we hear that we may have fallen short of our own high standards of excellence, we are grateful that we have the opportunity to review our policies and operating procedures to ensure 100% guest satisfaction in the future. Your valuable input helps us move toward that goal.

Mean temperatures for the Half Moon Bay area range from 50-58 degrees and, therefore precludes the necessity for air conditioning. Your comments on Trip Advisor indicated that the weather perhaps felt more like your home state of New York, rather than Half Moon Bay. In these rare instances of high coastal temperature, we have provided each room with a portable fan.

The recurring unpredictability of fog has prompted the federal government to mandate the placement of unmanned navigational aids which provide warning and ensure the safe passage for boats in limited visibility. By law, the high pitched electronic tones must be operational 24/7. The signal marking the entrance to Pillar Point Harbor sounds every 10 seconds identifying that specific location. Since it is a natural and expected part of a marine environment, the mention of a fog horn does not appear in brochures or websites for any our local hotels. For those guests who may be sensitive to sound, we have provided sterile, packaged ear plugs in each bathroom.

Walking distance to Sam’s Chowder House is considered by most guests to be a benefit. The restaurant’s commitment to quality food and beverage makes it a popular dining destination for locals and out of town visitors. While we are able ensure a quiet environment inside the hotel, we, unfortunately, cannot control the behavior of persons who may be using the path which connects Surfer’s Beach with the harbor.

As you know, continental breakfast is served daily from 7:30 am to 9:30 am. We take great pride in the inviting selection of fresh fruit, bagels and pastries. If the buffet appeared depleted, I can assure you that it was only temporary as our kitchen staff worked to refresh the display of food, beverage, and carrying trays. We are committed to provide all guests with a full selection of items during the entire 2 hour serving period. We apologize if it appeared otherwise.

From roadside inn to luxury property, the guarantee that high housekeeping standards are met is paramount to the success of any hotel. Since every room is inspected prior to guest arrival, your unfortunate experience with the cleanliness of the tub area has garnered our attention. Had the front desk been notified of this discrepancy, we would have happy resolve the issue immediately, up to and including a room change if desired.

Our family was looking for somewhere special to celebrate Mothers Day - our first thought was the Ritz Carlton. After being initially willing to swallow the cost of the room, they proceeded to tell us about the $25 resort fee and $45 mandatory valet fee! Ouch!! Needless to say, we decided to look elsewhere and were thrilled to find the Beach House! This place is beautiful: great location right on the beach, nice outdoor patio w/ beautiful view, well equipped rooms (all rooms have nice fireplaces, mini kitchens and decks/patios), nice wine & cheese hour, and lovely breakfast - at half the price of the Ritz! We are so happy with this find, and will visit again anytime we are in the area...

Took my teenage daughter to Cali and stumbled across this place and stayed 1 night. $175 I was upgraded to a partial ocean view room and all I can say is WOW! Great room, lots of space and a great view. Aveda products. Great continental breakfast with a lot of choices in the a.m., freek wi fi.
Coming from Ft. Lauderdale to a whole different coast, this place is well worth it.
It was defnitely the best place I stayed while touring Northern, CA, even better then the Mark Hopkins Intercontinental in San Fran.

I can't say enough good things about this hotel. The outside of the hotel is gorgeous. At nighttime, there are lights under the awning which makes it even more appealing. I reserved the penthouse ocean view room for 3 nights. All the furniture is really new and there is not one speck of dirt anywhere. All the amenities made me and my partner feel like we were on vacation even being in the room and doing nothing. The fridge and microwave helped a lot because sometimes we brought home food and wanted to save it for later on at night. There were two TV's, one near the couch, and one near the bed. The couch was incredibly comfortable, and the bathroom had Aveda products, which was a huge plus. We had complimentary breakfast every morning in the lobby, and breakfast trays were provided, which was a nice touch. There was a nightlight that goes on near the stairs in our room as soon as any other lights turn off so no one trips, which I thought was a very thoughtful touch. There were many other thoughtful things during our stay. All in all, this is a very beautiful hotel and I would definitely 100% recommend this place to anyone. The only bad thing is that I had to leave!

The wife and I spent a Friday night at the hotel to celebrate her B-day. Booked a couple weeks prior after researching price/reviews on tripadvisor. Best hotel for $230 a night range, especially for a Friday night (others were $300).

Location is great, walking distance to Sam's Chowder House, and right on the beach! The pool/spa was clean and a great plus (it helps when the fog stays away!).

Rooms were clean, and we were upgraded to a partial ocean view. Due to the room being on the end corner, the layout was spacious. King bed, sitting area with couch and two chairs and fireplace, large bath with shower and tub, and best of all a nice little balcony to watch the ocean.

All in all really nice place for the price.
