We were looking to get away for a night not too far from home. We'd stayed at the Beach House Inn previously and decided it was the perfect place for our impromptu mini-vacation.
I called and requested the type of room we wanted and we were lucky enough to secure the same room we'd had the last time we stayed there. Perfect. A suite is definitely the way to go at the BHI. The rooms are not huge, but definitely roomy enough and comfortable with a couch and easy chair, in addition to the table and chairs available for dining if you choose to do so. So many hotels only provide uncomfortable straight-backed chairs.
Our room wasn't ready when we arrived, so we went over to the harbor/marina area for lunch at the brewery. We checked again and the room was still not ready, so we went into downtown HMB and did some window shopping; something we would have done once we'd gotten checked in anyway, so no problem there. On our 3rd try our room was ready.
Everything was as we remembered..... except for the strong lavender aroma that filled the room. It was overbearing and way too much. And it was everywhere, even on the sheets and pillows. This is why I marked the Cleanliness option with a less than perfect mark. The room was clean enough, but it stunk. They really should use a more subtle fragrance in their cleaning products. Lavender is anything but subtle. We opened the sliding door to the balcony and all the windows and eventually the odor subsided, but I was surprised to find the sheets and pillows smelled of lavender, also.
BHI staff, if you're reading this, please, please change this.
I'd brought along my iPod and we enjoyed using it through the stereo system in the room. A nice touch!
We went to dinner at Sam's Chowder House next door and had a wonderful seafood dinner. We'd made reservations and they had a wonderful bay view table waiting for us. It was an easy 3 - 4 minute walk from the hotel to Sam's and I'd definitely go back again!
Someone else commented on the noise from the fog horns. Be aware that they're definitely there, but they're off in the distance and truly not all that loud. It's part of staying along the California coast. They come with the territory if you choose to stay on the water. And after a while you hardly notice them.
The Beach House Inn is a great hotel in a wonderful location.
