“Basic room in a great location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2010

This was our first time staying at the Harbor View Inn. We usually stay at one of the chain hotels when we travel through Half Moon Bay area but there were no rooms available at the hotel we usually stay at. This is a small family run motel that is conveniently located right across from the harbor (within walking distance). The website for this motel paints a somewhat different picture so we were a bit surprised at how basic our room turned out to be. It's fine for an overnighter or if you just need a place to stay after a busy day of sightseeing and other activities. If you're looking for a hotel to enjoy for its amenities, this is not it.

Our room was acceptably clean and the beds were comfortable. The bedding and sheets were very tired and almost threadbear. We had to ask for more pillows (which were immediately provided). The window seat was a nice touch but nothing really stood out about the room. It was very quiet even though it filled up relatively quickly the night we were there.

The woman at the front desk was very helpful in suggesting places to eat on the harbor front and gave us a homemade map which was very easy to follow. Her suggestion for dinner was Barb's Fish Trap...an excellent choice! It's some of the best seafood we've had in that area.

The little continental breakfast was just that, little and not really worth bothering with unless you just wanted to pick up a cup of coffee on your way out for the day. There were some pre-packaged danish-like things and some cereal offered but, unless you were really hungry or in a hurry, I would suggest the cafe next door or one of the restaurants by the harbor for a decent cup of coffee and a real breakfast.

Overall, it was comfortable, quiet and well priced for the area and this time of year. It's quite close to the town of Half Moon Bay which is great for an afternoon of browsing and relaxing. It's also very close to all the beaches and the harbor also makes for nice evening stroll after dinner. We would likely stay here again.

First off the front desk personnel have very little customer service. We arrived at the hotel, got a room, watched the small tv and went to sleep. Imagine my surprise when I go to check my credit card statement that there is an additional charge from this hotel of $40. We called to inquire about this charge and were informed that we broke the window screen frame... really? We were told "it looks like someone was trying to take it off." She told us the cleaning person noticed it. She also informed us that it would cost $140 to replace the window screen but for some reason they are only charging us $40... sounds a little fishy to me. When we asked to speak to the manager, the front desk person was hesitant to give us a name or phone number. When we asked when the manager would be in so we could call back and dispute this accusation with the manager, we were informed she would be in sometime on monday. So my words of advice are go through the room carefully and if you notice anything report it immediately because they will say you broke it, and charge you. Oh and by the way we have a picture when we first got there of my sister and I sitting on the window seat, beds made, bags unpacked, and the frame was already bent.

Small Motel right off the freeway. It was the most budget friendly place we found. All the other hotels were charging arm and a leg. You get what you pay for. Friendly staff, decent rooms, and short walk to the harbor.

If you do stay there, make sure you ask for the upstairs rooms. They have a better view of the ocean!!

Being so close to the beach we expected more. Beds were uncomfortable, no extra pillows blankets, etc. and the inside of the rooms seemed to be outdated and worn. The bath towels were thin and either dirty or stained. They barely wrapped around my young daughters and there weren't enough towels for 4 people. Very cheaply furnished rooms down to the toliet paper. My youngest daughter complained about that. We have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express for less with way more satisfaction. We were trying out a local hotel figuring it would be better. No bathtub, fridge, or microwave in our room. The noise of Highway 1 didn't bother us but the condition of the room did. The check in person/owner had no customer service skills either.

The brochure for this hotel makes it seem far more luxurious than it actually is. E.g. it states "microwave and refrigerator". We requested a refrigerator (just to be sure), but there was only a microwave placed on the table - no actual place for it, or a refrigerator. There was also no coffee maker in the room, and everything appeared very dated and stark; no pictures, and only a small screen t.v. set.

Fortunately we were only there one night ! We have previously stayed at the Holiday Inn Express close-by, and this is so much better.

  • Liked — Nothing.
  • Disliked — No coffee maker and vending machine out of order !

I needed a place to stay for one night and wanted something clean and economical....The San Francisco area can be so expensive. I found this place through the web and called them directly to make my reservation. It is a nice location on the ocean, just south of San Francisco. My son and I stayed one night and found it to be very good for the price. The gentleman who owns it was always very nice and helpful, whether it was recommending a place for dinner or breakfast, both a very short walk. (they do include free coffee, fruit and danish for breakfast) The restaurant for dinner was wonderful and right on the ocean. He was also very helpful when I needed to find a pharmacy...was quick to give me very specific directions. I like it when people know their area well and he does. The room was simple and clean. Some people have noted on their reviews that there is no air conditioning, but what they don't tell you is that the temperatures on the ocean are cooler than inland and the nice breezes off the ocean are all you need....don't worry about it at all.
I would not hesitate to stay there again!
