Tres Amigos is a fine little Mexican restaurant on Highway 1 just south of 92 near downtown Half Moon Bay. Nothing fancy here - the dining area is like you'd expect in any fast food restaurant. Historically most of their business has been takeout, but a few years ago they rebuilt the restaurant to create a much-needed larger kitchen and a larger dining room with more tables. During peak dinner hours the take-out line can extend out the door, but service is fast, the line moves quickly, and in any case the food is worth the wait. The favorite item is super burritos, but the menu includes tacos, quesadillas, tostadas, regular burritos, salad, and nachos in two sizes, with or without meat. Also plate dinners, sometimes including enchiladas. There is a nice list of meat choices; various forms of beef, pork, and chicken including lengua, and some items are available made with fish or shrimp. My favorites are super burrito al pastor, and the regular-size nachos with meat, al pastor. The super nachos with meat is more than I can eat in one sitting; likewise if I get a super burrito I may save part of it for lunch the next day. The nachos with meat is tortilla chips topped with meat, covered with wide stripes of guacamole, sour cream, and salsa fresca in a tasty rendition of the Mexican flag. The regular-size nachos with meat is quite reasonably priced for a filling dinner! The menu items are mostly high-calorie due to the residual meat grease, cheese and sour cream. I haven't tried to skimp on calories by choosing chicken and leaving out the sour cream - I imagine it would be a lot less flavorful. While waiting for your food, you can help yourself to the tortilla chips, radish slices, hot pickled jalapeno, onion and carrot slice medley, and three or four salsa choices.
