I suppose this review probably needs a preface. Number one, my boyfriend and I are both ridiculously busy and border on the far side of being chronic workaholics in high stress jobs. We regularly work 7 days week and we haven't been off for more than a couple weekends over the past few years. It had finally caught up to me, and I was at the breaking point, so I started looking for somewhere to go where we could unwind, relax, and focus on each other. I booked a one bedroom suite, golf view at the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay and *hoped* it would live up to my expectations and the beauty in the photographs, and I almost canceled the reservation multiple times because I didn't think it would. Number two, my mom is in the hotel industry, and my expectations are impossibly high for most hotels. Very rarely do hotels live up to my expectations.
We arrived around 1:00, and the front of the hotel was buzzing with people arriving and departing. I didn't expect our room to be ready. The front desk agent confirmed that it wasn't, but if I gave him 5 minutes and ran up to the lounge (which I don't think was included in our room rate), our room would be ready. I tried to say we would just run up to the store, but he insisted on accompanying me to the car with the bell staff, and true to his word, they escorted us right up to our beautiful room on the 6th floor. (Room 660, I believe.)
The room was large and more than we expected, as it looked out to the ocean and over the beautiful courtyard. There was champagne on ice and chocolate covered strawberries waiting on us. Everything was absolutely perfect. Later that night, when we returned from dinner, the bed was covered with flower petals, the mood lighting and music was on, and it smelled heavenly. We opened the windows, listening to the waves crash and cooling the room off naturally. (The next morning, we had a few birds fly in our room for a visit, so we stopped opening the windows!)
Housekeeping never bothered us when DND was on the door, and they always serviced the room quickly and while we were out. Lounge access was a nice perk - we had breakfast in the lounge every morning and snacks each afternoon and dessert each evening. We also appreciated the ability to get bottled water before heading out each day, and it was also offered by valet when we departed. I should note, the valets were always quick to try and help with directions or ideas of where to go when they brought the car around.
On Saturday, I was able to get a chair massage in the lounge, and I fell in love with the spa products offered. They seriously smell SO good, and the bath bombs made my evening soaks so much more enjoyable, though the Bvulgari amenities were perfectly fine, too!
Each evening, there was a wedding in the courtyard, and we enjoyed watching them set up. The bagpipes were a nice touch each evening, too. Neither bothered us at any point. We were not bothered by any sounds and I had no problem sleeping.
I had emailed Lauren with Guest Relations prior to our stay, and she had recommended a number of activities for us, and we took her up on several of them. Each one was perfect for what we wanted from our trip.
We did walk the grounds, and while we didn't swim our play golf, we did check out all the facilities. The golf course is lovely, and there's another course nearby. The indoor was full of kids and the water was warm enough for me.
We knew the weather would be cool, and the coast would be foggy. It added to the ambiance, and it was part of the reason I chose this particular location. We were able to be in San Francisco easily and the neighboring suburbs fairly quickly.
There is a Safeway 10 minutes from the hotel, but with the lounge access, we didn't need anything we bought. Lots of the HMB restaurants were closed on Sunday evening, so we could have planned better, but it worked out.
Honestly, the worst part of this hotel was when I realized I had to go back to the real world. I will DEFINITELY be back, and this has jumped high on my list of hotels/places I love. I'm still trying to strategically plan how I can make this an annual staple in my life. Or live there permanently. ;)
