“Stark and lively”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2014

San Benito House is located in the center of Half Moon Bay and thus in walking distance to many restaurants, shops, etc. The rooms are over the bar on the first floor. It is an excellent bar, friendly and a good selection of draught beer. It is also excellent in that it is lively, loud, and full of patrons until well after midnight. Do you see the problem?

Guests of the bar sometimes overflow out onto a patio with a fire pit. They laughed and drank and roared until after 2:00am the night we were there. Because this is an old hotel with thin walls, it sounded like they were in our room! And around 2:30, one of them came yelling down the hall, obviously drunk and profane, and woke up and got into an argument with his roommate…and we could hear every word!

The rooms are bare, some without private baths, the furnishings are old, one chair per room, the dimmest lights we have seen in years (impossible to read by—even the bedside lamp was no more than 40 watts). The bed? Excellent! If only we could have fallen asleep amidst the ruckus.

The price was very modest (although this is not a bed and breakfast so you are on your own to visit the excellent Moonrise Bakery up the street), so that helped a bit. But we won't return.

Room Tip: All rooms are noisy. Only room 12 has any charm.

I can't express enough how much fun we had at San Benito Ale House. We stayed at the hotel upstairs for 2 nights, spent some time at the bar downstairs and also had lunch at the adjacent deli. All three experiences were so great. Such a fun little getaway for us. We read some reviews on Yelp before we visited, some of which were quite negative, and after spending some time here, we have nothing but positive things to say. The Manager Charis (pronounced like Paris with a K) immediately greeted us with a smile and caring demeanor. Throughout our stay, she made us feel special--like we were part of the family. Walter the bartender was also so very nice and lots of fun. It's obvious that both if them have a passion for what they do here. The rooms are comfortable, the history of the building is intriguing, the location is perfect for walking in downtown HMB, street parking was always available. It was a bit loud at night, but they clearly disclose that this is part of the experience as it is above a bar and at a major intersection. The noise wasn't really that bad--I slept right through it. Three cheers (and 5 stars) for our new friends at San Benito House!

An old Historic Hotel in downtown. Has charm, history and the staff was delightful. Our room was small, but the bed quite comfortable and I loved the pillows. I only wish I could have brought them home with me. We had no trouble with the noise, but we were there on a midweek night. We choose to share a bath and were given the key to the separate toilet and shower. Both were extremely clean. The room did have a sink and we were supplied with amenities. The attached deli was certainly an added convenience. Oh, and we had the best homemade muffins with our breakfast on our morning there. I helped myself to several!

We thought maybe a Sunday night, and upgrade to the finest room. The room is above the bar??? It seems their solution to the noise they know you will experience is to supply you with ear plugs. They don't make ear plugs that are good enough to drown out the noise. Nice enough room but no way you will sleep. They should move this hotel to Bourbon Street,

Ear plugs are included in your welcome basket. That should tell you something. The bed was like a lumpy marshmallow. The noise was relentless. Half Moon Bay is nice and this building is historic, but find another place to stay.

Charming turn of the century historic hotel in downtown with plenty of street parking and convenience. Lisa checked me in with great service and a positive attitude. Room was immaculate and comfortable with no TV. The lovely grounds host weddings and events. A more than adequate free breakfast is laud out in the large dining room next to the bar/cafe. Food was delicious. I paid a walk-in lowered off season rate of $80 plus tax. The attached to-go deli serves sandwiches and some of the cafe food, again with a smile, this time from Marie. I could not have been better treated in a top ranking hotel.

This was by far the worst experience we have ever had at any hotel. We had a groupon for two nights and ended up coming home after one night.
1. The fire alarm battery was low and beeping all night. I called downstairs to have them fix it and they said they would have someone fix it in the morning. I asked them how they expected us to sleep and they just moved us to another room down the hallway. This is a tiny hotel so needless to say this made very little difference. They didn't offer anything to help. No one is available to help after hours.
2. Very noisy
3. NO tv, and not much to do in this town at night. The bar downstairs was closed by 1150pm on a friday night and the area around it was a ghost town. We were very bored
4. The tub didn't have a plug and had a shower head, but attached to the faucet of the tub. It was the most difficult uncomfortable shower. I had to sit down and try to shower. At least they could offer a plug or attach a real shower.
5. The toilet barely had room for me to sit without hitting the sink and I'm a small girl.
