“Marvelous Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2009

This was our second stay at West Sonoma Inn. Each time, our room was clean, modern, and well ap- pointed. The kitchenette was also a major plus. The grounds and pool were well maintained and downtown was a short stroll away. We also appreciated the beautiful vineyard views and the quiet.

We had 2 family reunions here - the first (2007) was so successful, that we came back for a second time. The service was fabulous and the owner was extremely flexible regarding holding blocks of rooms for us. We hosted a bbq one afternoon and it started to rain and the owner & mgr. came out with an EZ-Up and saved the affair. The grounds are immaculate and the owners continue to improve the rooms and ammenities. Each time we had between 30 and 35 family members including 10 children. The owner and managers went out of their way to accomodate our needs. All of the families loved it and I would highly recommend it.

Stayed at the West Sonoma Inn & Spa over Labor Day weekend. Staff very helpful & friendly They gave us a bottle of champagne when we mentioned it was our anniversary. That was thoughtful.. Good location to be able to walk to restaurants and the little shops in Guerneville.

Our room was the most deluxe one in the resort (It was the only one still available when we booked) and cost around $300/night. It was spacious, including a bedroom, kitchen & living room with a small deck and a view of a vineyard. There was a jacuzzi on the deck which looked pretty 'sad' as its cover was crudely repaired with masking tape. The furnishings are minimalistic and not terribly welcoming. The faucet on the bathroom sink moved around and the plug in the sink did not work.

The continental breakfast is served in a main lounge which was attractive and welcoming. We were at the Inn for 3 nights and the breakfast was exactly the same each day. The same little granola muffins, the same slices of pound cake, the same bowl of fruit etc. It got pretty boring and showed a lack of imagination & care. I would suggest that they vary the assortment of items for breakfast from day to day.

The streets through the complex are potholed and riddled with white circles around areas that need repair. The welcoming book in the room mentions that the Inn was purchased in 2005 and is in the process of renovation. They need to speed up that process.

Thank you for the review of your three day stay here at West Sonoma Inn & Spa. As I personally expressed when surprising you with a complimentary bottle of champagne, we were honored that you and John picked our Inn for your 30th wedding anniversary. I'm sorry that you didn't let us know about some of the minor issues that seem to have detracted from your stay. We have a wonderful handyman ready and able to help our guests.

I apologize for the hot-tub cover appearing worn - as luck would have it the new ones arrived this week. The breakfast that you found unimaginative represents our spin on the classical 'European Breakfast'. We offer fresh OJ, organic coffee, pastries, croissants, granola muffins, fresh mixed berry salad and whole fruit. As we opted not to increase our rates when introducing the breakfast on weekends and holidays, we believe this to be an additional value-add to our guests. The feedback from most guests is overwhelmingly positive and appreciative.

I'd like to address your comments about pot-holes and renovations. We have a few spots where heavier vehicles have damaged the surface of the asphalt. We have solicited bids for new asphalt (it was the bidding company that sprayed the white marks on the ground) but cannot begin construction work during our peak season. With regard to renovations – we have completely remodeled every room on the property, restored the Redwood lobby and reception room to its original beauty, launched a thriving spa and just completed the wine garden. We're happy and proud of the progress we've made.

Sincerely,

Karen O'Brien

August 13th. Great place, very clean, quite and really nice people. Good referral to the restaurant across the street for dinner, Dawn Rance Lodge. We would love to live in this small town. Check out the local coffee shop and ice creme store. Its a town where everyone says hello and everyone knows their neighbors. Armstrong woods just up the street from the coffee shop, much nicer than Muir woods.

I traveled with my parents and children (8 and 4). The area is wonderful and the hotel service was outstanding. The private cabin like accommodations make for a great spot to get away from it all.

My spouse and I went to the Russian River Valley this past weekend to ride our bike through wine country. We booked the Jr Vineyard Cottage Suite since it had a hot tub and a private deck over-looking a vineyard. When we got there we saw that the hot tub was in the room and not on the deck. It was the only suite where the hot tub was not on the deck. We spoke with the manager and he apologized and upgraded us to a larger suite with a hot tub on the deck with no extra charge. The larger vineyard suites are large and loaded with lots of extras. It has a full kitchen and the view from the deck is great. The staff was friendly helpful and made great recommendations for wineries to visit as well as local restaurants. The second night we had to move to a suite without a hot tub, but it was also spacious, quiet and relaxing. The people in Guerneville are all so pleasant and friendly. We will definitely go back as we live in San Francisco, only 2 hours away.

As a travel writer (international) I come across all types of inns, hotels and resorts. I'm particularly familiar with the Russian River as when we lived in the Bay Area before becoming expats, this was a frequent getaway spot. It's been nearly 15 years since
we've been back, and had remembered Guerneville's hotels as funky little B&Bs with little going for them. Needless to say, I was amazed at finding the West Sonoma Inn right in Guerneville. The hotel, set on the grounds of an old hotel with the back side facing a vineyard, has been completely remodeled by new owners who've poured their hearts into an impressive upgrade.

Every detail has been attended to - fireplaces, wonderfully comfy beds, nice fixtures, granite in bathrooms and kitchen, decks with Adirondack chairs to sip a glass of wine
while watching the vines grow outback. The owners have done a superb job of sharing
their sense of taste with those travelers lucky enough to find this little gem in the heart
of the redwoods. Enjoy!
