We just returned from a three night stay at the Applewood Inn. We loved every minute. We found Gwen and Jimmy to be excellent hosts. They were both very friendly, informative and helpful, without ever being too much so.
When we first arrived, we were afraid we'd regret not staying closer to Healdsburg. We were so wrong. The beauty and comfort of the Inn more than makes up for the longish (20-25 minute) drive at the end of the day.
Gwen gave us a small tour of the inn. We stayed in one of the newer buildings, and it was fantastic. You'd never know the building aren't all original. She showed us the main house, where freshly baked cookies were waiting. The pool was very nice, although we didn't use it. When went by there, there was a cycling couple relaxing, who'd requested some fresh fruit to snack on. Gwen had the kitchen provide a fruit platter that was GORGEOUS. I'm not sure, but I'll bet it was given to them at no charge.
Our room was great - it felt like home. Maybe not ours, but someone's. Beautiful antique bed, fireplace, reading lamps, and a very nice bathroom. We had a small back patio, and a front porch area all to ourselves. The bed was literally the most comfortable I've ever slept in. The matress not too firm or too soft. The linens out of this world. Pillows perfect. And I don't know what they use to launder the linens, but they smelled like a warm summer day. My husband definitely had a hard time getting me going in the morning.
Breakfast was very good. yes, only one option, but the preparation is good and the attention to detail tremendous. One morning we were served granola with fruit and yogurt as a starter. It was garnished with mint, which my husband doesn't care for, so he really didn't eat his. When Jimmy came by he asked if it was OK, and my husband explained that he doesn't like mint...no big deal, we knew a good breakfast was on the way. Two minutes later, our server brought out a fresh bowl, sans the mint...saying Jimmy'd ask him to bring it out. Now that's what I call service.
There were only two downfalls - one minor and one a little less minor. When my husband went to check out, he went into the office, and their resident bird was out of his/her cage and flying around. Apparently it kind of flew at him, and it freaked out my husband. No big deal, but he didn't like it very much. I don't think I'd have been bothered. Other item, a little less minor, is that the shower head was really lacking. In such a nice place, I do expect a fantastic shower experience. Oh, but there were all Aveda products stocked, which was very nice.
We will return to the Applewood Inn next time we're in the area. This is a great spot for couples...don't know if I'd go here with friends...
Oh, one more thing. Guerneville is a very cute little town. I'm assuming the Deliverance comment made by another reviewer is due to the fact that the town is very gay/lesbian friendly. If that bothers you, that this is probably not the area for you to choose. Otherwise, I can't see why anyone would object to staying in this area.
Enjoy!!!
