“Beautiful surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

We were on a road trip along the California coast and a couple of hours before sunset we reached Gualala. We were very keen to halt there for the night so that we could enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine, stay in a nice hotel and wake up to the beautiful view. We drove slowly along the road and saw this property which was the quaintest one on that road. We went in and asked for a room, and the guy at the reception was very enterprising and took us to see the room. We loved the room and the view....it was really beautiful! The room was clean, bed was comfortable and the jacuzzi came as a pleasant bonus! We quickly agreed to take the room and went back to the reception, the lady at the reception was very friendly and had a pleasant chat with her.
We checked in and quickly settled down in the balcony with our wine. The sunset was just perfect! We went on a short walk soon after to decide where to have dinner as the restaurant was shut for renovation. We came across a seafood place, a beer place, a mexican place, and finally decided to have sea food at the restaurant across the road from the inn. After a delicious dinner we headed back to the inn.
There was wifi in the reception area, but not enough coverage in the rooms. We didnt mind that at all coz we were there for only a night.
All in all, we were extremely happy that we decided on this property to spend our night. We had to continue our drive the next day and we woke up fresh and rejuvenated the next morning!

I found this to be a very nice place to stay indeed. The rooms were spacious and cozy and the view was marvelous to wake up to. The staff was warm and friendly. I would recommend this Inn to anyone that I care about without hesitation.

Loved our ocean-facing balcony, nice jacuzzi (in room) and fireplace. We stayed two nights in two different deluxe rooms, first night was England (which has a sauna), but had no wifi connection, so second night we moved to Japan, which was much nicer. Be warned, wifi was weak everywhere, but overall, we really enjoyed our stay. Easy walking distance to the few local restaurants, and close by to coastal access paths with spectacular views.

Several of us on a bicycle trip down the coast stayed here and were all impressed. The rooms fronted on the ocean and had great decks from which to enjoy the view. The bed was comfortable and we also enjoyed the jacuzzi tub and couch in the room. We will return as soon as we can.

Beautiful, large room with spectacular view. We loved the large deck overlooking the ocean, the fireplace and the fabulous two-person jacuzzi tub. Very comfortable & romantic.
We also loved the restaurant. The food was delicious and the service absolutely stellar. Everybody at the restaurant/bar made us feel like royalty. Thank you!

We wish we could have stayed longer and would definitely go back.

We popped in for a drink and a bit of food on the way down Highway 1. The staff are very friendly - Eric the Manager is brilliant! The service, food and drink, fantastic! We had a 2mth kid with us – baby friendly!
With the sun setting in the horizon we decided to have a look at the studio next door (great balcony over-looking the coast) and decided to stay. The room was perfect!
All in all made us feel very special and will definitely go back and recommend without hesitation. Cheers!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

My husband and I love the Breakers Inn and stay there twice a year- always for a long weekend for his birthday in July, so we just got back. We always stay in the California room- a luxury suite with lovely calming colors of blue/ green and sand. The huge spa tub next to the ocean view windows is my favorite. We spend the extra money because it has always been worth it. We always loved the graciousness of this place, and were greeted by the owners or managers, and made to feel welcome. There was usually wine and cheese in the sitting room, and refreshments on the sideboard in the lobby, plus breakfast in the morning. It is booked as a bed and breakfast, after all. This year, something was different, and it made the trip not as lovely. When we checked in, the two young women at the front desk looked and acted as if they were housekeeping staff- indifferent, and the one just pushed the registration paper toward me. They obviously weren't invested in the hotel as proud locals. They had no sense of professionalism, and there was no greeting or welcome. They seemed confused and rude. She and the other woman then informed us (without us asking) that the hotel no longer served breakfast. When asked why they had a confusing long explanation that the restaurant next door had started serving breakfast so then they couldn't but then the restaurant stopped serving breakfast. Huh? Our disappointment was met with shrugged shoulders as if it was not their problem. We also noticed no wine or refreshments in the lobby (there was some sherry in the sitting room but it looked paltry.) I asked if they were under new ownership or management- she said no. I asked if the manager was around and they said no. When we expressed concern and disappointment, they again just shrugged.

When we got to our room, we noticed there were very few towels, so I called the manager's extension. She answered and when I started asking about the changes we had noticed, she immediately got defensive. It seemed she didn't really care if we were happy so I got off the phone. Five minutes later there was a knock on the door and it was her. I am hoping we just had a fluke of a bad experience, and that our experience was unusual. This woman said she was the manager and said "before you hung up on me" and proceeded to say, and repeat, how she takes it very personally when guests are unhappy, and how hard things had been since they came there in September (?) and they were training new staff, etc.- defensive. She gave us a basket that contained some towels and a small bottle of wine, and said she was discounting our room. I felt that was enough compensation, and said so, but that what I cared about was the former graciousness and welcoming atmosphere of the hotel changing- she was so busy going on and on about taking things personally, I got no assurances. She was more interested in talking about her situation than really listening.

During our stay, we had very loud guests upstairs with children, and I went to ask them if they could be mindful of us downstairs. Next thing I knew, I was walking outside and another young woman with scary heavy black eye makeup smoking out in front of the office asked if we were in the California room, that they were going to ask the people above us to move. ???? I wouldn't have asked such a thing, and hadn't involved the management. When returning to our room I heard the man upstairs, obviously being confronted by the management, shouting "No way will I move- that is just ridiculous!". More drama!

Just too much drama, and a weird atmosphere- again, we are hoping this was unusual, because we would like to think the Breakers and the California room are a place we can count on going back to. We love Gualala, but like to count on professionalism, without getting involved in the problems of the hotel management- we pay to get away from those things! No amount of training of staff can teach people to be gracious to guests, and no amount of dramatic defensiveness and strange excuses can change a situation that I hope improves on it's own. I wonder who the owners are, and if they are aware of what is going on. The exterior of the buildings was starting to look like it needed attention. It would be a crime to let the Breakers Inn slip into a less than beautiful destination. Let's hope the management gets the message!

Room Tip: Get a room on the upper level if you want less noise, but the luxury deluxe spa suites are the best...
