“Great place to stay and convenient to Yosemite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

Having read the recent reviews we were not sure what to expect but liked the look of the place. Yosemite was busy and we couldn't find anything in the park. We stayed 3 nights and loved Lillaskog - for its location, views and hospitality. There are a few rules (like quiet time from 9pm) and Kathy explained the history/rationale which was perfectly sensible. The breakfast was seriously good and prepared with pride. We would happily return

Lillaskog Lodge has much to recommend it. It's located 25 minutes from Yosemite park gates and is surrounded by beautiful scenery, although access is by a rutted track, which tests your car's suspension. Our twin room was small, with a single and a double bed, and on arrival, very clean and well looked after like the rest of the lodge. However, our room and separate bathroom were not cleaned, or the beds made during the three nights of our stay.

Breakfast was plentiful, with a wide choice of fruit and good coffee. Although cooking facilities were advertised, we never had access to them, and various reasons were given (a fault with the stove, baking for a wedding taking priority).

We enjoyed ourselves in Yosemite and liked the accommodation, but we were barely made to feel welcome by the owners and staff. No one introduced themselves, or attempted basic cordiality, such as, asking "where we were from?" or "have you had a nice day?" etc. At first we thought we'd offended the staff in some way, until we read reviews by other guests, who'd had a similar experience.

It seems this coldness is reserved for some visitors and not others. If you stay here, hopefully you'll get a warmer reception than we did.

We stayed here during June 2012.

It is a lovely setting but the staff (Kathy) wasn't at all welcoming. We felt like we were in the way during our stay there.

There were a lot of specific rules which could have been delivered in a nicer manner - I have not come across so many rules at a B&B before!! As well as being written we were "reminded" verbally numerous times - weird!

We couldn't understand the insistance on using paper plates/bowls and plastic cutlery when there were normal plates/bowls available - it was very weird!

The accommodation is very clean and comfortable, but the walls are thin.

The breakfast in the mornings were very nice.

Lillaskog owners are wonderful human beings. After review of guests overwhelming positive feedback about the Lodge itself, and then "cringing" as they read the overwhelming negative feedback about the "cold" treatment by the former caretaker, they have made the move to bring in great management!

My name is Cecilia and I am the new General Manager. As a world traveler myself, I understand what it means to invest in dreams of a great vacation. And over my dead body will any guest ever feel anything but comfort, welcome and joy when they stay at our beloved "Lillaskog" in the future.

New Management only has ONE Rule: Guests Rule!

Guests of Lillaskog are going to love the unique Lillaskog experience, completely enjoy themselves when they stay with us and leave with plans to come back!

While the accommodations at Lillaskog were very nice, the hospitality was pretty much non-existent, and we did not have the same experience as other reviewers. On our arrival, Kathy (who never introduced herself), showed us to our room with little chatting. When we asked a
question about hiking, her response was "Do I look like a hiker?"

There was a very obvious sign stating that breakfast is served between 7:30 and 9:30. As early morning hikers, we asked Kathy about eating earlier, and asked if she could just put out cereal for us.
We were told "as long as we didn't interrupt her flow". Quite the rude response - in addition, most
B&B hosts are perfectly willing to make you something for earlier.

Another morning we came up early and had our breakfast cereal. We returned to our room to get
backpacks and when we came back by the kitchen at around 7:20, there were cinnamon rolls out. I asked Kathy if she'd mind if I took one. Her response "That's why we serve at 7:30 - so it doesn't ruin the presentation". Obvioulsy, she minded and again, very rude - and if I had come up at 7:30, would it then have
been okay to take a roll?

We were just very disappointed. We typically stay at B&B's so that we have conversations with
our hosts and learn more about the area. At Lillaskog, we felt like nuisances. We were never
asked about our day, or given anything more than a brief good morning. And Bill was non-existent.

That being said, our room was clean and nice. There is a lovely sitting area to relax in and the
views are very nice.

Can you imagine owning the most beautiful, pleasant, peaceful Grand Lodge on the edge of Yosemite Valley...building that Grand Lodge over four years, placing it "just so" on the forest property to give guests the full breath of stunning mountain views and Yosemite snow caps, making sure guests can catch sunrise from their bedroom windows and sunset from a gorgeous dining deck - literally putting your heart and soul into creating a forested slice of heaven - and then opening your doors to share your beloved Lodge with with Guests - only to find yourself in "hell"...having a part-time caretaker completely alienate them with a nasty cold shoulder, a bunch of self-imposed ridiculous "rules" and even refusing them a "fresh out of the oven cinnamon roll" 10 minutes before breakfast is served?

We can...we did...THAT CARETAKER IS GONE! The lovely owners of Lillaskog know that the stoutest efforts at excellence can be shattered in a split-second, by a careless individual who does not "get it"... So, the owners have invested in great new management.

I am Cecilia, the new General Manager. As a world traveler myself, I "get" that when we invest in the dreams of a great vacation, that is what we want. Now...that is what you'll get!

Over my dead body will any guest experience anything other than warm welcome, comfort and joy during their stay at our "beloved" Lillaskog.

This was easily the prettiest, most comfortable and relaxed place that we stayed during our trip.
The interior looks like it's out of a fairytale - Swedish design at it's best, and makes the most of the stunning views. Kathy and Bill were great hosts, and were always there to chat or give advice about the area, without being overbearing.
Kathy is an amazing cook, and breakfast was yummy, healthy and varied. She also treated us to her homemade sugarcrust pies a couple of evenings - what a homecoming from a busy day of sightseeing!
We really enjoyed relaxing here - sitting outside, watching the sun going down and the hummingbirds feeding, or curled up infront of the fire with a book.
We wondered if we were missing out by not staying in Yosemite NP, but the answer was no! We found that we got the most out of our trip by driving around the park to hike in different areas, and the drive in is spectactular. Also, the valley looked quite crowded when we visited, and we were actually glad not to be staying there.
Bill gave us so many amazing tips for places to visit (he has a lifetime of experience working as a ranger in Yosemite). The best tip he gave us was to drive across the Tioga Pass to the old gold mining town of Bodie - you'll get away from the crowds, and the scenery is breath-taking!
Although it was one of the more expensive places we stayed, it represented much better value than the places inside the park, and we would go back tomorrow if we could! Thanks for a wonderful stay.

Lillaskog was very nice place to stay. Breakfast was good and location was beautiful.
Big El Capitan room was a good deal for four person. It takes a while to drive to Yosemite Valley, but I would say that if you cannot stay in the Valley this is one of the best places outside.
