After doing a lot of research on the limited amount of hotels/B&Bs in the Yosemite area, I chose the Groveland Hotel, mostly based on the reviews on Tripadvisor. I have to give the hotel and it's restaurant a mixed review. The owners are absolutely lovely and friendly and the beds are as comfortable as other reviewers have mentioned. However, there are some things that DEFINITELY need to be corrected at this hotel.
SERVICE: Upon arrival, the front desk clerk was on the phone handling a problem. After the lengthly phone call, she hung up and greeted us warmly. We finished the check in and were advised by the clerk that she would accompany us to our room. Unfortunatley, another couple showed up to check in and the clerk proceeded to check in the other couple without asking us to wait or acknowledging us. We were forced to wait in the small entry way while the couble checked in, which took a long time.
ROOM: For an old hotel, the rooms are updated and beautiful, without losing the charm of the period in which the hotel was built. The amenities were outstanding and the room was spotless. The problems came at bedtime. The foldaway bed for my daughter took up almost the last bit of room we had left. That would have been bearable, BUT oh the noise, noise, noise, noise!!! We could hear every car that drove by and every conversation that took place outside our room. Two (2) gentleman sat outside our room at 11:00 p.m. and started a conversation. I could tell they weren't talking loudly, but their voices carried into our room. We could hear every person who walked by our room, both inside the hotel corridor and outside the hotel. It sounded like the family upstairs was taking a bath in our room. While the beds were soft as could be, they were no match for the noise and our family had a very bad night's sleep.
RESTAURANT: This is the hotel's second biggest downfall. For dinner, we ate at the Hotel Charlotte. Afterwards, we came back and decided to purchase dessert from our hotel restaurant and take it to our room. At first, they told my husband dessert was free. He reminded the waiter that it was to take back to our room and the waiter assured my husband it wasn't a problem. They brought out the dessert tray and after my husband made his order, the waitress said he couldn't have the desserts on the tray because they were special desserts and they weren't for free since he hadn't ordered dinner. He said he didn't care and ordered the desserts off the menu. (For which we were charged, understandably.) It took another 1/2 an hour just to get two (2) desserts!
Breakfast wasn't much better. Our table was dirty with crumbs from the previous people who ate there. Even though there were 3 staff members walking around the small breakfast room, we and other patrons had to ask the staff to restock the buffet table so there was food for everyone to eat. There weren't very many people at breakfast, but service was poor. We ordered an omelet that took too long to get served and we had to remind the waitress we ordered it and when it arrived, it was cold!!
So, the bottom line is this...The Groveland Hotel is charming, clean and well decorated, but has it's serious downfalls. If you choose to stay at this hotel, I have two (2) suggestions:
1) Ask for a room as far from the street as possible.
2) Avoid the restaurant.
Do those things and you should have a nice stay.
