“Great time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2012

To start this off... we must mention Theresa and Chris at the front desk. Both were amazing and they were the definition of GUEST service. Hard to find good employees these days that truly care about your experience, and we believe they do. With that said, do not expect the 4 Seasons. This is an old historic hotel with creaks and that wonderful musty smell. The staff do everything they can to provide a clean room. Being management of a hotel ourselves, we are probably a bit more picky than the normal traveller. We were very impressed with the level or service. There was live music nightly in the bar. We had read a few reviews of it being very noisy, but surprisingly we could not hear any of it from our room. One of the nights the owner of the hotel himself played with another member of The Regulators and we were blown away. (Even bought a CD) If you ever travel to Grass Valley make sure to check out the Holbrooke Hotel and Ian & Steve from The Regulators. They had a nice breakfast in the morning but watch out for the waffle maker.... Or just ask Chris for help. :)

This is an interesting hotel to visit at it is historic but I wouldn't recommend staying the night. We arrived in the evening and they only had one young girl at reception who was very nice but we were a big group with lots of luggage so there wasn't much help she could offer us. One of our rooms looked out to the garbage dump in the parking lot and we were all woken up at 6am by the garbage trucks going by the windows. The breakfast they offer is also very poor.

The front desk actually sealed the deal a few hours before we even made a final decision on the accomodations for the evening. This is a hotel the way a hotel should be--a sitting area and a great bar just inside the front door! The hotel has a great feel as do many hotels of this vintage. This place is used to catering to people's desires and it shows. Rooms in front can be a bit noisy.

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear are quieter

We usually stay at the Courtyard Inn and Suites when in Grass Valley, but it has a 2 night minimum. On this trip we were only planning an overnight stay, so we opted for the Holbrooke. We'd hosted a dinner party there many years ago, and we enjoyed the funky ambiance. The front desk staff is friendly and accomodating. The rooms are obviously older but nicely furnished. Some challenges with the older plumbing and sparsely furnished bathrooms; all of this is to be expected in a historic hotel. The hotel is dog friendly, and like most dog friendly hotels, they ask that you not leave your pet unattended in the room. There was not much shady parking available when we wanted to go out to dinner or breakfast, but the Holbrooke and also nearby Tofanelli's allow well-behaved dogs in the patio dining area, so we didn't have to leave the dog in the car. Regarding the parking, the bar is very popular with the after-work crowd on Friday night, and they don't reserve parking spaces for hotel guests, so we had to park on the street Friday night when we got to our room at 6 p.m. By 7 p.m., the parking lot had cleared out, and we were able to move the car into the parking lot.

Room Tip: We stayed in the main building. We were told that the rooms in the adjacent Purcell Building are eq...

If you're looking to stay somewhere authentic with a historic gold rush atmosphere, then the Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley fits the bill. If, however you are looking for a restful night's sleep, then keep on driving and maybe choose one of the nicer B&Bs in town where you can be assured you won't be kept awake most of the night by partying going on by not only hotel guests, but the hotel staff too. Our first night at the Holbrooke was relatively quiet once the saloon closed and the bar patrons settled down around midnight. The next night - not so. The revelers were only getting started as we were settling down. The rooms on either side of ours were occupied by noisy guests who partied well into the wee hours in each others' rooms, up and
down the outside staircase, and on the patio below our room. Around 1 a.m we made the first of several calls to the front desk, and were assured the noisy guests would be told to settle down. They dod not, and in fact, we discovered on our next call, that the front desk clerk had a remote phone with him and was in one of the rooms partying with the other guests. Needless to say, our request that the noisy guests please keep it down, was ignored. Not only was it noisy until 3 a.m., our room also had a smell from all the cigarette smoke that wafted in from the hallway. After a terrible night, we checked out the next morning, complained to the desk clerk, who seemed to be familiar with our problem and also that hotel staff was "friends" with the guests in the rooms on each side of ours. I obtained contact information for the hotel owner, Ian Garfinkel, who happened not to be there that morning. I emailed Ian our complaint, fully expecting him to be at least a little shocked by the behavior of some of his guests. Instead, I received a fairly uninterested response, which is as follows, complete with typos and misspellings.
"I want to thank you very much for informing about your experience. I was aware of the very loud and rude people number15 minutes. I personally wouldn't talk to them at around 1030the and told on that they had to be quiet. I also informed. mike at the front desk who is normally very responsive. I will be contacting the guest personally am letting another they are not welcome to stay at the hotel any longer. I do value quiet. At the holbrooke hotel. Again I apologize for your experience and I will correct the problems there. I will also follow up with you on the results of my investigations. Thank you so much ian garfinkel."
The email was obviously talk texted and shows very little concern for the guests of his hotel. A respectable hotel would have offered a refund for such a disturbing night. We have heard no more from mr Garfinkel since this one message. It would not surprise us if he is partying at night with the noisy guests.

So, if a restful night in gold country is what you're after, keep driving past the Holbrooke Hotel. If, on the other hand, frat house atmosphere with lots of drinking till all hours, with no regard for other paying hotel guests, then this is the place to stay!

We had dinner in Grass Valley and didn't feel like going home as the evening was still young. We headed for the Holbrooke Hotel for some good music and a fun crowd along with the fact that it was within walking distance of where we had dinner. A great little 3 piece band was playing old rock and roll with some country mixed in. Most of the people inside were in their forties and up. It was fun and a few brave souls did a little dancing in between tables and customers. We would have danced had there been more room. Service was good and the drinks were great. It's a nice place to go and listen to music along with people watching. Not sure if music is just on the weekends but we liked the fact that the band started before 9 or 10:00. I was told they started playing around 8 PM.
