“Pleasantly Unique Hotel with super helpful staff”

The Goodland hotel is truly a unique place to stay. The record players and vintage records in the rooms, unique books, and unique magazines make the rooms feel like staying in a "local's" beach home. The restaurant is a very social environment with seamless indoor/outdoor seating through large garage-style doors and a covered patio. They have done an amazing job taking an older style 'motel' and turning it into a relaxing place to enjoy their resort features and the surrounding beach areas. I think it's great for business travelers and would be great for friends and families. I do not think the value can be beat for the the price. On top of the unique place, the staff does everything they can to make your stay personal and comfortable.

Room Tip: The hotel hosts music on certain nights & the restaurant is lively. Consider rooms facing away f...

This place is a joke. It's not a hotel. It's a place they call a hotel but really just some walls they call rooms. The walls are so thin that even a whisper can be heard. At first sight I liked the look of the place. But that's just on the surface. If Kimpton was going to renovate a hotel I would highly recommend spending a little more and improve the walls and maybe a double pane window. For the price per night that they are charging this isn't too much to ask. The rooms carpets are dirty and stained. In the morning went to the lobby for a coffee and it smelled of cigarette smoke. Figured I'd go outside to get some fresh air on one of the benches. Nope, some of the staff were out there smoking and that was the reason for the lobby to smell like smoke. After one night we left and will never be back again to Goodland or any Kimpton hotel

Looking to getaway for a few days, tried out a newer member of the Kimpton family. Those who frequent Kimpton properties know that they tend to take in the flavor or themes of their locales. The Goodland with its emphasis on the beach lifestyle lives up to that expectation.

The staff is extremely well trained and courteous and go out of their way to place emphasis on the customer. I watched them deal with large groups who happened to be in house for work and birding retreats who did so with aplomb. They were great with the many four legged guests they had on site as well.

Given that they are in Goleta, the night scene is largely comprised of folks who are staying at the property which can lead to an interesting mix of people.

My experience with rooming did not quite match up with the other reviewers possibly because due to my status received a suite (one of only four on property) which was lovely. I particularly liked the portable record players and vinyl in each room. You can go to the front desk and switch out records, which I did to provide me with some youthful memories. With the beachy furniture style and decorations, one almost expected to find sand on the floors. The beds are low and comfortable, the bathrooms spacious.

Special staff to recognize include Seth the manager, Pamela from Pittsburgh, and front desk people Kyler (who worked the midnight shift and was a full time student) and other young ladies (whose names escape me). All went out of their way to make recommendations, and find ways to make my stay enjoyable.

A couple of minor concerns: as the rooms are only situated on two floors, you can expect a good deal of noise and foot traffic if near the bar/pool and on the ground floor. Also, there was a sulfur smell that emanated from one of the bathrooms.

Still a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Stay on the 2nd floor & in back if noise an issue. Despite being there for most of week, mostly...

Green Features: Good as coffee service in lobby eliminates the disposable containers often seen in hotels. Did not offer Green Choice to have laundry or sheets done every other day.

The staff at this property are genuinely caring, and truly exceptional. Which is why I really wanted to give this place four stars. Unfortunately, it falls a little short in a couple key areas. Most problematically, there is essentially no soundproofing between the rooms and you will likely hear every detail of conversations in adjoining rooms. This was especially problematic for us as our neighbors were conversing and watching television in the middle of the night, making a restful sleep all but impossible.
On the plus side, the hotel has a funky and fun beach vibe, which carries throughout the property from the record players in each room to the eclectic furniture. Picture the quintessential 1950's roadside motel remodeled with a new-retro feel. The hotel itself is centered around an old courtyard pool. Make sure to get a room in the courtyard, as the exterior rooms miss out on the remodeled scenery and probably get more noise from the adjacent freeway.
The restaurant is only open for dinner on weekdays, but offers a nice menu, and some great drinks in a fun, laid-back atmosphere. The pork tacos and build your own guacamole were highlights. I highly recommend spending happy hour lounging in comfy chairs by one of the two fire pits. You can also take advantage of the hosted wine hour for free wine and perhaps a nibble from 5-6pm, a nice treat common to all Kimpton hotels.
If you are looking for a high end motel, and need to be in Goleta, this is a decent option, especially if you get a good rate on the room. Just remember to bring your ear plugs, or request a room with no neighbors. But if you are looking for a more traditional full service hotel, as well as nearby restaurants and attractions, I'd suggest trying Kimpton's Canary Hotel in downtown Santa Barbara.

Room Tip: Ask for one without neighbors. Unless you like hearing your neighbors all night.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our hotel and share your experience. I am glad that you enjoyed the "Goodland charm" in many areas and I also really appreciate the feedback about the noise between the rooms. Without wonderful feedback like this, we cannot change the areas that need to be addressed. We are a newer property and I will be speaking with you engineering team immediately to see what we can do about this. Thank you again for your feedback and we all hope to see you back at The Goodland again soon.

I used price line to get a hotel near UCSB. I was visiting my daughter for Mother's Day weekend. Pros, staff very nice. Cons, the walls are so thin in the rooms you can hear very clearly your neighbors talking word for word! next the carpets were very stained. There was no bathtub in room and the shower just had a half glass door ( half of shower open) no jacuzzi down at the pool! There was a 75.00 resort fee that I did not see. THIS HOTEL IS NOT A RESORT!! The bed was hard although comforter very soft and comfy. I will not be using Priceline again if they do not downgrade this hotel from a 4 star for fear I woud get this hotel again. The grounds were ok but really if you want to sleep In forget it! You hear everything starting from when the sun comes up.

Room Tip: Not sure there is a good room! I did ask for my room to be changed to pool area, nicer view but wall...

Thank you very much for taking the time to review our property. I am so sorry that you did not enjoy your time at our property. We are always striving to exceed our guest's expectations and it is heartbreaking when we miss that mark. We do have a resort fee, but that is due to our amazing grounds, pool experience, and programming that happens weekly. For instance on Mondays all of our guests have the opportunity to use free surfboards, kayaks and stand up paddle boards. I will review your comments in detail with my team and I promise we will make the appropriate steps to remedy the issues. Thank you again for letting me know how everything went with your stay and I hope you have a great weekend.

We stayed here one night in April. It looks like a motel spruced into a hotel. The rooms are small and so is the bath area. We had a room close to the pool and it was loud out there with blaring music. The rooms are definitely not sound proof. We had requested a room with 2 double beds. When we walked in the carpet was filthy with big stains all over. We requested a room change, and were told that everything else was renovated but the carpets. Well we got another room with a king bed as they didn't have another room with 2 doubles, and it wasn't the best either. And they do not even have any complimentary continental breakfast like other hotels in the area. Not worth the price of over $225. Giving them and extra point for the polite customer service.

Hello Pixel05,

Thank you for your feedback and we sincerely apologize about the carpets in your room. I know it’s not any help now but please know that we are working to find an immediate and permanent solution. We appreciate the feedback regarding the service. On your next trip to The Goodland our carpets should be resolved.

This is not Kimpton's best renovation! It's an old Holiday Inn, and although they have put alot of cool and groovy influences into this hippy hotel, it's still a holiday inn underneath! We were in an upgraded room, and still had to pull the room darkening shades to have privacy, and everyone walked by our windows to get to the restaurant. This might be a new add for the area, but for those who look to Kimpton for a classy retreat will experience a surprise here. Breakfast was great... Housekeeping needs some lessons on cleaning and replacing towels, washcloths and removing dirty dishes!

PDXfan33,

Thank you for your honest feedback regarding your stay. We are sorry we could not exceed your expectations and live up to our Kimpton standards. Our hotel is definitely different and though we cannot change some things, like the hotel layout we will continue to focus on our Housekeeping service. We hope that you can try The Goodland again on your next trip to Santa Barbara.
