“too much litter”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

too many people who do not know or understand how to preserve their beaches!
and a city who does not care about clean-up efforts.

“The best swimming and picnic beach in Santa Barbra County”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

It is a way from the tourist, plenty of parking, lots of lawn, palm trees galore, barbeque stands and picnic tables. Fishing off the pier, dolphins swim by just off shore and play the fish around the underwater reef 50 yards or so off the pier. In the mornings hundreds of pelicans fly down the coast over the beach and in the evenings they fly back up the coast. This is a favorite beach for the scantily clad UCSB students who have posted a sign that says “Locals Only Beach”. The only down side is that the park is in the tsunami zone and it is a long ways past the Goleta slew to any elevation.

“Something for everyone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Goleta Beach has something for everyone. Set in a semi-bay area, the views from Goleta Beach showcase the cliffs of UCSB, the cliffs above the slough, the islands across the Channel, wonderful sunsets and even the mountain range on the other side of the Goleta Valley. There is a large grass-covered area with picnic grounds for small groups and really large groups--the largest of the group areas is covered by a wooden trellis--and all the picnic areas have barbecues. There is a nice playground for the youngsters and a horseshoe court for older folks. The Goleta Slough empties onto the beach, affording ornithologists lots of bird watching opportunities. The pier is used for fishing. There is a popular restaurant right on the beach that serves a seafood-oriented menu. A bike path goes through the beach traveling up to UCSB in one direction, the airport in another direction, and going toward the east, it travels along a scenic creek until it connects with street paths that go all the way to downtown Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara beaches. It is a very pretty beach, and if you are up to wading through the slough, you can walk all the way to Hendry's Beach (aka Arroyo Burro) toward the east.

There are a couple of reasons this beach is not as popular as other beaches in the area. First, Goleta Beach has long been known as the beach with the most tar, and locals know to watch where they walk to keep it off their feet or shoes. (Tar can easily be removed with paint thinner, by-the-way.) Secondly, a bad ravaging of storms a number of years back and the passage of time have made accessing the beach area a little more difficult. Near the restaurant, there is flat access--after that, there is a climb down about a four- to six-foot drop.

However, these two cons do not stop too many from enjoying all that the beach has to offer. On any given day you will find families picnicking, college students playing some sort of organized game on the expansive grass area, painters capturing the scenic vistas, couples walking hand-in-hand, and folks walking their dogs. You might even see some woman accepting a proposal of marriage--some woman just like me.

Please note that while TripAdvisor is forcing me to select just one sort of visit, I have enjoyed going to this beach as a child, going to this beach with a group of friends, I have attended several group events at this beach, attended an office picnic at this beach, gone to this beach alone and even held a family reunion at this beach. But these days, it is mostly my husband and I who go to this beach, usually with our dogs.

“Goleta Beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Great beach for picnics. You can reserve table and grill areas for large parties at a nominal fee. Go to the go,era park district website for more info. Great beach for swimming, paddle boarding, boogie boarding and even fishing from the pier. You can ride your bike to the beach on the adjacent bike path. Plenty of car parking too. A great family friendly beach. No lifeguards on duty though. Swim at your own risk.

“Had a good time watching all the fishermen and woman enjpying their Sunday mornings and the fish were biting!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

We had a nice walk and stopped for refreshments at a beachside stand that offered clean picnic tables with umbrellas. Good people watching. We will go back when we have more time for surf and sand!
