“Wonderful Sonoma retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

The Gaige house is a quaint boutique hotel/B&B. Located off the beaten track in Glen Ellen, it offers a refined stay in a quiet spot that has great access to the Sonoma wine county. The Town of Sonoma is about a 15 minute drive and there are also numerous eateries near the Inn. The Gaige house offers both rooms in the main house plus studio like rooms in adjacent buildings. The grounds are lovely, there is a nice pool and a comfortable sitting area in the main house. Breakfast is a nice combination of breads, rolls, fruit and yogurt. Spa services are also offered although I have not tried them.

Room Tip: Zen rooms in the outlying buildings are quiet, very peaceful and quite spacious.

We were looking for a quiet and lovely place away from what has become a very touristed area. The Gaige Inn was perfect. Glen Ellen is an pisturesaue town with some good restaurants. It is in Sonoma Valley which we much prefer over Napa Valley (too commercial and crowded). They have wonderful off season specials . . . 2 nights for the price of 1. If you have never visited the wine country during harvest (late Aug to Oct), then it's worth the crowds to go then. However, if you have already done that, try off season. Everything is less expensive (food, lodging, tasting and tour specials) and the vintners have much more time to talk to you about their wines. The suite rooms at the Gaige Inn are very large with king beds and a gas fireplace, outdoor terrace overlooking a wooded creek area, enormous bathrooms with a large jacuzzi tub and a walk-in shower. The breakfast is included along with evening wine and cheese. Breakfast is high quality, excellent cold and hot dishes. There is a very nice pool which would be great in the summer.

Room Tip: Suites are very large and comfortable. Did not view rooms in the house.

Loved everything, artfully decorated, cozy and yet swankish common areas, a smaller but well-designed pool and hot tub surrounded by the trees, absolutely quiet. Sumptuous breakfasts! Close to town and restaurants, and the vineyards too. Sonoma seemed less Disneyish than Napa. Plan to return.

Had gone here on the recommendation of a co-worker of my wife. We had booked at the Fairmont in Sonoma. But the Fairmont is the same old, same old. Something new was a good idea. After calling and speaking with Brittany, we booked a Zen Garden Suite and canceled the reservation at the Fairmont. The Satruday night rate was high but the rest of the week (to Wednesday) was very reasonable. Total cost was within dollars of the Fairmont.

Even though there was a conference at the Fairmont, the sub-10 minute drive to and from was fine. The Gaige is easy walking distance to some nice restaurants.

The suite was lovely. Bedding was great, nice ameneties, very "easy going" for time away. Breakfast was a nice selection, buffet style. The bottom line again is, would we stay there again? Absolutely.

One minor problem was heat in the room. We expressed our concerns and we were given a space heater for the walkway from the bedroom to the bathroom. The next morning we mentioned it and they swapped the remote for the heat control and bingo all was well. Snuggling under the covers was perfect too. The staff we met were lovely.

There was a nightly wine tasting starting at 5:00. Spoke with others who were both local (San Fran) and out-of-towners like us, and all had the same opinion.

Room Tip: Do a Zen Suite. It is worth the extra $$

We came here to celebrate our anniversary and couldn't be happier. Our room was very quiet and private, and tastefully decorated - really brought a sense of tranquility indoors. Breakfast was absolutely delicious, and the cute town of Glen Ellen is just a few steps away. Delicious restaurants and cafes await you arrival in town.

Glen Ellen always had a fresh supply of cookies available for guests, and common area was very inviting and cozy to emulate a sense of home while away.

Staff is very helpful and resourceful.. Thank you for taking care of us!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

My husband and I decided to stay here for a short Christmas getaway and we were very pleased with the zen suite.
The hotel was clean and cozy. We probably would've been disappointed if we didn't stay in a zen suite because the "hotel" is actually an old historic house. The suites are seperate buildings.
Our suite was large, had a giant soaking tub, fireplace that was warm and turned on with the flip of a button and the zen garden was neat and gave the room a nice calming feel. The bed was super comfy.
The complimentary wine and cheese at 5pm was a nice touch and very delicious. Also, there are freshly baked cookes available throughout the day and those were yummy!

Glen Ellen is a sleepy little town, which was nice for our romantic little trip. Downtown Sonoma is about a 10-15 min drive away and there are many nice wineries nearby to visit. (Benziger and Imagery being a couple of my favorites).

Some cons:
While the breakfast is included and delicious, it's very limited. Some healthier choices would be nice, but it was still very good.
I was a bit confused by the website, so let me be clear - there is NO restaurant or spa on site. That also means no room service! They do offer massages, but that's it. I think that's a waste because there are many other places that offer pools that tap into the hot springs as well as local mud treatments. Since the area is known for these things, those are the types of spa treatments I personally am looking for along with my massage.
There are a few good restaurants within walking distance, but make sure you have reservations. It must be a "wine country thing", but everyone makes you have reservations and wait for a table even though there are many open tables inside. I don't get it, but be prepared!
We were a bit annoyed that we were almost unable to have dinner on Christmas Eve because nobody bothered to tell us that reservations would be necessary. The front desk totally dropped the ball on this. They obviously knew this would be an issue, so they should've told guests upon check in. They tried calling a few places, but nobody had availability. Luckily, my husband has the Open Table app on his phone and was able to get us into a place that said they were booked when the girl at the desk called.

Also, there is a very bright light at the front door of the suites. While it was nice so you can see, it was awful to try to sleep. I'm a light sleeper, so it was a problem - however, the front desk quickly had someone come remove the bulb when I complained. I slept MUCH better after that.

Overall, this place is nice if you're looking for a quiet intimate escape with your significant other. If you're doing a girl's trip or group trip - I'd stay somewhere else.
We stayed at Solage in Calistoga last time which kind of spoiled me - I think I just prefer the Napa area, but this was still a very nice place.

I wish we all still lived in gorgeous old houses like this one. My room (#1) was large, charming and well-appointed. The food and service was exemplary. I would have loved to have stayed longer than the 4 nights I did. I wish everywhere I've stayed on this trip had come up to this quality and value.
