“Romantic cottage in perfect location to Sonoma Valley”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2011

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights on our 10 year anniversary! We loved it! The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable! The jet tub was amazing after a long day of wine drinking and shopping. It was a little chilly at night, so having the fireplace as heat was great for not only warmth but ambiance. Location to the Sonoma Valley and the surrounding area was perfect and we didn't have to deal with all the traffic and noise of Napa. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: Cottage 1 was great, but they all look good!

We really enjoy staying at Glen Ellen Inn. This was our second visit and we stayed in the same cottage (#5). Very quiet and centrally located for our purposes! Nice continental breakfast every morning complete with coffee, scones and fresh fruit. Steamer shower and whirlpool bath are a plus and new decorations in the room this time with a French theme.

My husband and I reserved a cottage for 2 nights and I found it sort of average. The strengths are that it was clean, great bed and walkable distances to several restaurants and the local community. I did not like not having a room phone, and because our cel phone was not working, we had no way to contact any one. I missed having a hotel person to ask questions of. I would look for somewhere else to stay in the future simply because of feeling cut off. The breakfast items were ok...fresh fruit, and make your own coffee which was good. Providing real creamos (kept cold in room fridge) would be much better than the oil product that was provided. The setting is lovely, at the edge of a creek with many trees providing a beautiful leafy canopy.

My husband and I had driven through the quaint Glen Ellen area a few times over the past several years, but had never stayed there. The Secret Cottages are very nicely and thoughtfully decorated. The whirlpool hot tub was wonderful after a day of wine tasting and hiking in the nearby Jack London State Park (sadly, slated to close due to budget cuts in 2012), The location is very peaceful overlooking a gorgeous creek area. The restaurant was fabulous with a great martini selection and delicious grilled oysters. We will be back!

In the Napa/Sonoma area, one quickly gets the idea a vacation here can get very expensive. You can probably find an Economy motel by the highway, sleeping in a dingy room that smells like Lysol. My wife and I prefer modest comforts and look for something in between the extremes.

The cottages at Glen Ellen Inn were right in that sweet spot: Not too cheap, not too expensive. You get all the charm of a B&B - your own private living space with every comfort and detail attended to. Not bad for roughly $150/night. We've spent twice that amount for a single night in dirty and depressing Atlantic City, NJ.

The cottages are located in the sleepy little town of Glen Ellen. I think because the area is less known and not really associated with wine country, there is no traffic, no crowds, and none of the blowsy nouveau-riche trappings like clothing outlets and health spas. This little hamlet in the woods is literally one main road, a handful of stores, maybe five restaurants, and two tiny food markets. It feels more like a rural neighborhood than a tourist destination.

The cottages are tastefully decorated, spotless and almost all of the appliances and trimmings are brand new. Our room featured a separate whirpool tub and steam sauna in the shower. The whirpool tub is not one of those creepy, "what did people do in this tub," situations; but a clean, working spa that you can relax with a nice glass of wine. A gas fireplace, flat-panel TV, a stocked wine fridge and a fully-stocked dry bar are in the room too.

If you eat light, your breakfast is already paid for: There is a complimentary fruit basket with cookies and scones that they refill every morning, and a coffee machine.

Located behind the restaurant, off the main road, the cottages are clustered together and surrounded by lattice fences, pergolas and grape vines. The area is enclosed and feels private, and the back two cottages are adjacent to a stream. The view is best in these, our room (#4) overlooked the stream and the quaint stone bridge that leads back into the neighborhood. At night, you can't hear a sound from the road or the restaurant. There is a community pergola along the stream, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, or a glass of wine.

Our linens, bathroom, bed and the complimentary fruit basket were attended to every day. We never saw the service staff.

Minor complaints: The cieling fan in our room was not balanced properly and shakes noisily, we couldn't run it at night or it would keep us awake. The other problem is that almost all of the windows will not stay open - looks like the springs are broken or something. If you want to sleep with the windows open, you'll need to get creative with props.

A previous review complained of a car garage across the street... seriously, it's nothing. You're in a small town where people need to get their cars fixed. From the cottages, you wouldn't even know it exists. Besides, it's kinda cool looking, an old garage with a vintage sign.

We did a lot of research before staying in wine country. This place is, hands down, one of the best deals around. The restaurant is worth eating at, too.

Room Tip: The two cottages at the back of the development (#4 and #5) are along the stream and offer pretty vi...

We had a quiet cabin near the creek and could listen to crickets late into the evening. Cabin included fridge, TV and a large bathroom. An assortment of fruit and pastries were available for breakfast snacks. Inn is located in quiet community of Glen Ellen, easily accessible to the highway. We would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I took a short trip to Wine Country for my 30th birthday - one night in Napa Valley, one night in Sonoma - and stayed at the Glen Ellen Inn during our stay in Sonoma Valley. I wish we had booked a second night here. The room (cottage #4) was so cute - king-size bed, jacuzzi tub, steam shower, fireplace, all kinds of amenities in the fridge - and the inn is located in a quaint, relaxing setting. I regret not having dinner at the restaurant which looked adorable as well as not having a drink at the bar because they had a great list of drinks...instead we drove into downtown Sonoma for dinner. The Glen Ellen Inn was a short drive to wineries in Santa Rosa and Kenwood. Benziger was very close by and we loved our tour there.
For breakfast, they leave a basket of goodies (fruit and scones) in your room. However, we went across the street to the Garden Court Cafe which was delicious - great Eggs Benedict!
I definitely recommend the Glen Ellen Inn to anyone. The price of the room was fantastic - I would expect to pay $100 more than we did for a room like that on the East Coast.
