Chains like the Black Bear Diner are geared towards customers who want big plates of homestyle food offering good value for money. However, it is not really the place for lighter eaters and people who are simply put off by the sight of people shovelling down massive plates. Having said that, the breakfasts are quite good and consistent in quality. And the burgers are quite acceptable. Many of the other entrees and lunch items have high sodium levels as well as high calories, so are not suitable for people watching their diets for medical or other reasons. I have asked to substitute fresh fruit for fries, and the staff are willing to do this, but this is not always available, The servers at this particular Black Bear Diner seem to be very nice and accommodating overall. But, you have to check carefully orders to go, as items tend to be forgotten. And, since this restaurant is in Gilroy, it would be nice to have some food with garlic on the menu.
