“Surprisingly nice.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2007

We decided to stay at this hotel during our trip from the Central CA Coast to Seattle for the Holidays. The hotel is located at the south end of the Redwood Forest and is ideally positioned for a stay just before you venture out to the forests.

The front desk staff was courteous and friendly. The room was very clean and comfortable. They even had a crib/playpen for our 8 month old child.

The continental breakfast was excellent and offered a good variety of quality foods.

There is a wonderful map painted on the wall of one of the buildings that details the redwood forest and the local attractions.

Overall, a good value and a welcome sight for a weary traveler.

I wasn't sure what this hotel would be like as it had some mixed reviews but the room was lovely, two big double beds and a nice big bathroom. I did see one homeless person but compared to San Francisco where we'd just come from it was nothing. The breakfast was nice too.

I was a little worried looking at the outside of the hotel and the town itself. The inside of the hotel was very nice. The wine and cheese, and the buffet breakfast was good. They say they have a heated pool even on their sign but, when we got there they said only the spa was heated.

  • Liked — Wine and cheese
  • Disliked — town and outside of the hotel very dirty

Dirty for any standards.
Was already a deal getting my girl to the woods, so wanted a nice hotel to at least hide from the elements for her sake as she is a very clean person...I am not so picky myself unless very bad. Our bathroom had someone elses shavings on the floor, a lot! Then there was just dirt and a handful of bugs poping up from under the uncaulked tub. Then the drain was slow so you had to stand in 2-4" of water while showering.
In the bedroom, the beds and carpet looked dirty the first night but not sure, the second night was obvious they did not change sheets or vacuum floor.
Also they had a high school party going on the second night in multiple rooms and kept me a wake, typical guys yelling, girls crying a typical teen drink party.
If that is what you are looking for, go for it...but we where looking for something else.

We needed a place to stay and this hotel was where we ended up. Nothing special here with the hotel or the town. For $135, it seemed a little over-priced for the middle of nowhere. We had pizza at the Mexican/Italian place in back of the hotel, which was tasty. Couldn't get the internet working from our room, but worked fine in the lobby.

This place is wonderful - nicely decorated rooms. Enjoyable swimming pool and spa area with a nice green lawn area. They have a nightly wine and cheese party. The place is very customer service oriented and exceeded our expectations. The breakfast spread was enjoyable in a sunny and large breakfast room area (reasonable times 6-10) for the early or late diner.). Excellent location for seeing the Redwoods. Garberville is a small town so can basically walk anywhere in town. This is nice after enjoying your 2nd glass of wine at the wine and cheese reception. Overall great place to stay.

We were on a trip up the Pacific coast and were looking for a place to stay one night near the Redwoods. All hotels were booked in Ft. Bragg and this was the next closest town we could get to that night. Check in was easy and the room was great. Large, clean, and with everything you'd need (fridge, internet access, dining table, etc). They offered complimentary wine and pop in the evening and a good continental breakfast in the morning. The location was perfect for seeing the Redwoods. Its just a couple miles south of entrace to the Avenue of the Giants and the national park.

The town, however, was not so great. Garberville is basically an extended exit ramp off of 101. Its one street with a couple motels, gas stations, a grocery store, and a restaurant or two. We asked the front desk clerk where we could grab something quick to eat, as we were tired from driving all day and it was late. She said nothing in town was quick, although the Chevron station had an Aztec Grill that served large burritos (which is where we ate and it was a poor experience, even for a gas station fast food restaurant). The town had plenty of homeless people wandering around, and many others who probably just looked like they were homeless. There were shouting matches between some of these people across the street and just made the area feel unsafe to walk around. None of the other motels in town seemed to be as nice as the Best Western.
