“Peaceful Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012

We have been traveling to the "Redwoods" for years and Benbow is the perfect retreat. The authentic architecture and furniture reminiscent of the Art Deco era transforms you to a time of elegance and opulence. The terrace dining next to the Benbow bridge over the lake is breathtaking. The cuisine is superior to any 5 star dining we have had, Every meal was fantastic and the breakfast was most memorable indeed. The whipped cream was heavenly and the buscuits were moist and delighfully weighty. We will continue to journey north to our favorite retreat of the "Redwoods" - Michael and Marilyn

The Benbow Inn in Garberville California is an extraordinary place to visit: we loved the time we stayed and wished we could have adjusted our schedule to stay longer. The grounds are a pleasure to walk around and there are many places to sit to view the sights. One of the reasons we loved our room is because it had a back door to a patio overlooking the creek.
The redwood forest can be reached by going in any direction from the inn. We took a ride through Garberville then a minute later we were in most delightful, enchanting area of the redwood forest. We were on the road to the coast which has trees overhead that made it seem like a tunnel. We just could not get over the beauty and eventually drove the entire twenty three miles to Shelter Cove at the ocean. It has a black sand beach that is fascinating but little to cold and wild for a swim
My wife and I intend to go back next year because we had such a good stay. I suggest the Benbow Inn to anyone traveling in Northern California.

Benbow Inn was once a destination: a turn-of-the-century surprise bordering a cool summer lake in dusty redwood country. Now the lake is dry and the inn has lost its way.

We wanted to show our teen son the place where Mom & Dad had a blast some twenty years ago. What an embarassment! The front porch now overlooks an extended parking lot and some shabby outbuildings. The lobby was filled with awkwardly arranged Victorian furniture, some odd stuffed animals and cheap souvenirs. Our room - well, we had to change from the 1st crypt they tried to steer us to - was truly unpleasant: tacky decor, plastic flowers and a bed without a dust ruffle so you could see where it hadn't been vacuumed in years. The hallways were covered in peeling, vertical stripe wallpaper which only exaggerated the claustrophobia.

We cancelled our dinner reservations because we couldn't bear to spend an exorbitant amount in a place we considered unfit. Still, longing for breakfast, we entered the dining room where the waiter informed us that after "I'll have what he's having," his next favorite customer comment was "Come back later." And he did. Much later. The hot chocolate he brought was microwaved milk and syrup in a tall glass; the eggs were cold.

The 2nd day, we made a mistake of sleeping late and couldn't get anyone to clean the room "because the maid leaves at 2:00." Huh? Cutting corners apparently is routine, and since the owners of Benbow bought the RV trailer/golf course land across the highway, it's clear they are not sure whether they're running a down and dirty park-n-stay or a historical inn. The fact that this "other side" of Benbow has a pool doesn't help any: it's drab, untended and depressing (as is the general store, game room and office), and we haven't been at many pools that can
actually lay claim to being depressing.

But surely the piece de resistance was the discovery of pair of tighty-whitey men's underwear wedged by the bedpost - not belonging to our family, I can assure you.

To Management/Owners: Even historical inns need to change: no one wants to stay at Miss Havisham's house. Clean up the look (and get a talented designer from S.F, not the two young girls with their ugly pseudo-Victoriana swatches); clean up the place (including major landscaping); spruce up the dining room and get a good chef (one with pride might be nice); and learn how to run a class-act inn.

Room Tip: Don't until you are absolutely sure that everything has changed, and we mean everything.

We traveled here in February and were hit by the heaviest storm of the winter. What a great place to have to spend a rainy day inside. Whether you are relaxing in your room sitting by the window, or down in the lobby by the fireplace, this place is perfect for relaxing. The Tea and Scones in the afternoon top it all off. Just one word of warning, some of the rooms are very cozy, so if you are not used to that and looking for a giant room, you may not find it here. For us, it was the perfect getaway. The only thing missing was more time!

While the hotel is near Garberville, it is not in Garberville. This is important, because Garberville is druggie heaven and to be avoided. The hotel is just south of town. It's a historic building from the mid-1920's, no longer owned by the Benbow family though they are frequently around. The bad news: no elevators, and significant carpet wear. The bellman cheerfully carried our bags. Room are not ADA-compliant, though they are working on it. Our room in the terrace area, was large with period furnishings and a great bed; mattress and pillows were excellent. The view from our balcony was of the back yard leading to the river with a giant tree dead center. Great!

Dinner was mixed. We had to send wifey's halibut back; it was cooked to a crisp, but they took it off the check and comped her to a scallop dish in its place. ur dessert pastry was a little heavy, but otherwise the meal was really good. Rooms are expensive, but the upkeep of a place like this must be huge. We would definitely return.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are pleased to hear you had a " great bed; mattress and pillows were excellent". We have engaged the services of an interior design company to refurbish our guest rooms, hallways and other public areas. This work is scheduled to begin in the fall of this year. We look forward to your return visit to the Benbow Inn.

Quaint, historical hotel near south end of avenue of the giants. Ornate woodwork everywhere. ALL of the electrical outlets in our room need to be replaced! Every one of our phone, laptop, camera, etc chargers literally fell out of every socket in the room as soon as they were inserted. No TV if that matters to you, we didn't care but some might. Room smelled a little... stale or musty maybe...cracking the window seemed to address. Service at front desk was slow but pleasant.

Thank you for your review of our Inn and for being our guest. We appreciate all of our guests and especially those who give us feedback. As mentioned in other responses to reviews we are in the process of completing a renovation of all of our guest rooms and hallways. The guest rooms’ renovations will include carpets, draperies, furniture, bedding and the like. We will be upgrading all of our electrical outlets and adding additional outlets to accommodate all electronics devices which are part of our everyday world. We hope to have specific “charging stations” in each room for phones, lap tops, cameras, I pads and the like. Thank you again for your comments and we hope you have a chance to return for another stay.

A friend recommended that we stay here on our road trip up the West Coast. Of course the surroundings are breathtaking. Very cool atmosphere to this historical inn. Very comfortable and clean room. The reason for less than 5 stars is for the dining service, which, unfortunately, will stand out in our memory of this place.
