Marat’s is an unpretensious restaurant in the shopping centre at the southwest corner of Cedar and Shepherd. Simply furnished, the place is spotlessly clean, tidy and cool – air conditioning was a real boon given Fresno’s recent spell of 100+F temperatures.
John our host was delightful and helpful not only about the food but also about Armenian history and culture.
We shared the lamb and beef kebob plates, which came with salad or tabouli and rice pilaf, and the chicken borack plate. All were delicious. The beef and lamb pieces were wonderfully spiced and beautifully tender. In the end the lamb received two out of three votes as the tastiest dish.
None of us had enough room for dessert, but we were given, on the house, a Napoleon to take home. A light, flakey puff pastry with a delicious cream-based filling – a family recipe, according to John. Surprisingly, by the time we had driven 10 minutes to home, we had enough room for a bite or two of the Napoleon! Again, rave reviews.
