December 24, 2005 - My two night stay at the Courtyard in Fountain Valley (officially called the Huntington Beach Fountain Valley Courtyard) was to add two nights needed to retain my elite status with Marriott Rewards. Nevertheless, the hotel impressed me and I can recommend it for a variety of reasons.
The hotel is located at the intersection of the 405 Freeway and Brookhurst, with very easy access North or South on the “405.” It is 7 miles from Orange County (John Wayne Santa Ana) airport and 15 miles from Long Beach Airport. Disneyland Resort is 9 miles away and the beach is 5-1/2 miles directly South on Brookhurst.
Check in was typical “Marriott” quick, taking less than one minute. I had reserved a king non-smoking room and it was available even though I checked in about a hour early. This property was renovated within the past year. The hotel looks new throughout. My room, #332 was on the third floor overlooking the courtyard and outdoor pool.
When the rooms were redone, the closet across from the bathroom vanity was eliminated and a granite coffee bar with a refrigerator underneath was added. The closet is now part of the furniture unit in the bedroom which also includes a bureau with TV and the work desk. The king bed was comfortable and had five pillows. There was also a queen size sofa bed and coffee table. Lighting in the room was excellent and there were ample outlets to plug in all of my electronic stuff.
One of the best features of the room was the large two-tier work desk. The bottom pulls out there is plenty of room for a laptop and to spread out your work. HS internet access is complimentary and worked perfectly. The desk chair was a rocking-swivel office style chair and was very comfortable.
The hotel restaurant is only open for breakfast. The buffet has a good variety of both hot and cold items and you can order eggs or omelets cooked to order, which I did. For other dining options there are a lot of restaurants within 5 minutes of the hotel including Stuart Anderson’s (steaks), Claim Jumper (large variety huge portions), Mimi’s (French), Applebee’s, and Super Mex (pretty good Mexican food and very inexpensive) all on Brookhurst just south of the hotel. There is a Starbucks about 1-1/2 miles north on Brookhurst at Edinger.
Being in Southern California this hotel’s pool is outdoors. The whirlpool spa is enclosed with one side open and not as inviting as those in many other Courtyard hotels. There is a small exercise room next to the whirlpool spa with four machines, free weights, and a wall-mounted TV to help pass the time.
There is a business center as part of the lobby with a PC with HS internet access and printer and a large work area including a small conference table. Next to the business area is the lounge with fireplace and large-screen TV. It is a comfortable and inviting area. Also in the lobby is The Market, a “micro” convenience store with primarily drinks and snack foods.
Service at the Fountain Valley Courtyard was excellent. On the second day of my stay I could not get back into my room. The front desk associate immediately accompanied me to my room and made sure I could get in instead of just handing me a new key. The server at breakfast was also friendly kept my coffee mug full.
Being adjacent to the 405 freeway makes this hotel very convenient, yet it is out of the congestion around Orange County airport. There is plenty of free parking all around the hotel. For the good service, newly refurbished rooms, and the convenience I recommend this hotel.
