I booked the Ocean View Lodge about 7 months ago and had been planning my 10th anniversary with my wife every since. For some reason, I started to have buyer's remorse as we approached, maybe because I wanted it to be perfect and it was a surprise for my wife. Reviewers saying things like, rude front desk, dirty beds, not enough towels and pillows, no continental breakfast, no pool.
Well trip advisor helped me in one regard. It kept me away from the North Cliff hotel primarily because the view seemed obstructed and the foghorn seemed a bit much. I also asked for extra pillows and towels immediately upon check in. Not only did I get them willingly, but had extra towels every day from room service without asking.
Okay- if you are coming from the Bay Area and like Wine, take 101 to 128 (Anderson Valley Wine Region) try Yorkville and Navarro Wines, both fantastic. After that, we drove to Fort Bragg, of course by then the surprise was up but my wife did not know where we were staying.
When we got into the room, my wife's first line was "Oh my God, can we buy this place?" As soon as you walk in (if on the 2nd floor) you see amazing whitewater crashing views. We got room 57 based on trip advisor. The room was huge, over 500 sq ft, had great bathtub jacuzzi. Both my wife and I fit in it perfectly as we do not always at similar hotels.
The gas lit fireplace was great for me, I'm allergic to regular fireplaces, the mini-refrig was a bit bigger than expected. We got a bottle of champagne and $25 off our 2nd night, stayed 5. Shower and bathroom itself was sizeable.
The view is the big bonus, but the room is great. The front desk gave me great map of local restaurants and had nice selection of broshures for local interest. Jack who checked us in talked about the restaurants in full, when I kept asking, what restaurant has the best sunset? He kept telling me, none beat the sunset from your room.
He was right, our first night we had an amazing sunset, will upload photos soon. We had a couple of foggy nights after, but we go to the area for cooler weather, so it was nice.
I love walking and running the bluffs, you can go for miles, on and off the beach. A couple of nice secluded rocky beaches below bluffs, sometimes tricky to get to but we made it, a nice sandy beach about 200 yards away as well. We were there in Spring so bluffs had great wildflowers, I even flew a new American Flag kite on the bluff. View was amazing, the pictures don't show chairs on the patio, but they keep them inside the door so they don't blow away. We even saw horses going by the room. Those who complain about the 10 mile walkway in front of patio bug me, I think its fun, we even had random conversations with folks. Oh yeah, we thought the bed was good, and we kept our door open listening to crashing waves all night.
I'll write more about restaurants separately, but here are my recommendations.
For our 10th anniversary we went to La Petite Rive, its only 6 mos old so not many knew about it. Fantastic! 5+ Stars. Its actually in town of Little River 2 miles south of Mendocino. It was about 15-20 minutes from Hotel.
In Fort Bragg we ate at Mendo Bistro twice 5 stars! Only reason not a 5+ is because no view, but great atmosphere.
Capt. Flints- 2 Stars, its a local place, pretty much a handful of fried seafood plates, well known for place Overboard movie was filmed, cute but nothing special. If I lived there I'd go a bit because cheap and easy and good food. Nice to get down to Noyo Harbor too.
North Coast Brewery- We sat at the bar, watched the game, had very slow but friendly service. We think the person who ordered our appetizer (garlic fries which ended up awesome) forgot because couple next to us got their's in 30 seconds. Give it a 3 stars. Good for once a trip up there, a little cheaper, one of only microbrew restaurants I've been to where I like the beer.
Pacific Coast Winery- 15 miles north on H1 to Westport, wine tasting and Pacific Coast view, amazing place, friendly host, got to watch Abalone divers too, ate and drank on the Pacific Coast Cliffs, awesome! Wine was pretty good, not the best, but definitely a place we will go back to. They have Charbono which is rare.
Bamboo Gardens- In Fort Bragg, best Spa ever. Had couples tranquility sweet with sauna and tub with relaxing additives and then 90 minute massages each... best ever. They spoil you with nice tea and of course water too. Atmosphere is serene.
Enjoy your trip to Fort Bragg- and stay at Ocean View, be sure to get top floor, its worth the extra money. First floor had view, but not as good.
