“Falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2011

Though we have happily stayed twice a year at the next-door Surf & Sand (sadly, now closed), we decided to try the Beachcomber, just north of the recently restored railroad trestle at the north end of Fort Bragg. RIght on the ocean, almost all rooms with ocean view and screen doors, sheers and draperies, we opted for an upstairs 2 queen room for $139 in May. We were overall pleased with the view, the ocean roar, the cleanliness, the modest but sufficient continental breakfast (juice, coffee, breads, pastries, toaster, oatmeal), plus there were a small fridge and a microwave in the room - we brought our own milk, fruit, etc. and enjoyed sitting out on the balcony. The beds were nice and firm. Only complaint was people smoking on their balcony (not allowed); I had a prompt response from the front desk when I let them know - there is no smoking on the property. In addition they gave me a card - for every night you stay you get a stamp and after seven nights you get one free. Free wi-fi didn't always work, but we had no trouble in town at the Headlands, our favorite place to have coffee or listen to great jazz in the evening.

In June, drove up from San Fran on highway 1...absolutely gorgeous drive but all the curves wore us out! We decided to stop at the Beachcomber in Fort Bragg and what a find! Our second floor room was very nice with a balcony looking out on a beautiful beach and California coast line. We only stayed a night but wish we could have stayed longer. Staff very friendly. Room was 119 a night. I called the front desk because our air conditioning was not working and was informed that there was no ac and to just open our sliding glass doors...probably one of the best nights sleep we have ever had with the sound of the ocean. Glad we were on the second floor though, since our sliding glass doors were open all night.

Room Tip: Second floor with balcony

This one of only three hotels in Ft. Bragg right on the beach. We have found it to be the most reasonable and the rooms are very nice.

Would be nice if they had a spa/pool for the kids. Breakfast consists of only carbs, but tasty. Service was excellent and friendly. Right on the trail that follow the beach for miles.

Will definitely go back.

Room Tip: Top floors have best views (No Elevator)

My wife and I booked a king bed on the lower floor-- room 106. Not sure if this was one of the best views, but it sure was amazing. The motel is situated on probably the best bluff in Fort Bragg. There are trails which go directly to the sand and cliffs overlooking the ocean. Sunsets are amazing. We watched it from our room before dinner with a glass of wine. The rooms size was average and the bathroom was tiny. It had a flat screen tv, nice couch chair and the bed was very comfortable. A lot better than most hotel beds. It seemed the rooms had been renovated as well. This place exceeded my expectations by far. The location of this place is just fantastic!

Took a quick overnight trip and came across the Beachcomber. Excellent location, fabulous restaraunts nearby, amazing view from the room. Very comfortable, clean and affordable, staff was super friendly and polite. Easy walk to the beach and tide pools, walking paths right outside your room. Looking forward to returning soon...

15 years ago I headed out on a "hermitage" to find a room (that I could afford) looking out over the ocean. I ended up turning around and going back home. On my current "walkabout" I found my dream room at the Beachcomber and stayed for four nights. I pulled the comfy armchair over directly in front of the sliding glass door that looked out onto white indigo waves crashing onto black rocks. A magnificent stand of trees provided dramatic sunset views. I could step out and be on the beach in moments or watch the weather, people & dogs stroll by from my room. Service & staff was fantastic. I will definitely go back.

Room Tip: Definitely go for a King room on the south end.
