“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2014 via mobile

We totally loved this place! Wonderful location in the middle of an amazing rainforest. The rooms are lovely and very comfortable, food was good. The whole resort is built resembling the longhouse.
We had a wonderful massage at the spa.
The swimming pool is great too.

Everything about his place is dedicated to squeezing as much money from the small number of dwindling guests. Huge place that can accomodate probebly hundreds but we saw about 10 people. $6 for a can of tiger beer and $40 for a bottle of house wine, that's 4 quid Sterling and 26 quid sterling, awful food, and, might be OK if the service existed to justify it does not. In fact the hotel reminded me of the movie The Shining. Overpriced excursions, everything is overpriced. Worst of all when you are here you are theirs as there is no where else to go!! Then we get onto the overpriced food which is equally awful, seafood soup with no seafood, seafood noodles with a bottle of ketchup as the main base sauce and 2 bits of squid. Burger with cold fries and antique egg. I requested to see the manager but no one could find him. Based on the first night we canceled our stay and left the island the following day. Room jaded/tired decor but bed was comfortable, however could not open curtains as faced the resort road, as in a foot away, and a view of on site power station. Whole resort badly maintained rubbish clearly visible everywhere. I have not stayed at a Hilton Hotel for years and based on this experience would not book one anywhere. Breakfast in morning stale corn flakes, replaced with more stale cornflakes! This place is a run down overpriced dump in a wonderful location. Wish i had booked a local home stay instead. Returned to Kuching a day early and glad to have escaped the rip off!! Well done Hilton!!!

Fantastic location with very friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is a 4 hour car journey and a 20 minute boat trip from Kuching. Hotel is a little tired and 3*. Great location to explore a Longhouse.

Be aware that the internet is extremely limited. No Wi-Fi available, only dial up. Use the html mode and you will be able to read emails....no surfing though. Rooms are clean & spacious. Food in the restaurant is better than average. If you care to have a glass of wine in the afternoon or with dinner, you will want to bring your own from the city. They had no wine, but did have beer and mixed drinks. We too did a visit to the Iban Tribe and would highly recommend it. It is a place for those that like an adventure.

We visited Batang Ai during our vacation at Malaysia for a 2 nights stay. The hotel is really good, but you should definitely know what you expect from a place in the middle of the jungle.
Location is great, with nice lake view, the place is built in the concept of the longhouses and is as close to nature as it can be.
Rooms were big, pool was nice.
Although there were some small things that can be improved. I would expect more variety in breakfast and a bit more professional staff

Have in mind that there are birds all over the hotel, several stairs you have to climb, so do not get many luggage with you and that you are in the middle of the jungle so no wifi is available, but only a pc with a very very slow internet connection

Personally I really enjoyed my stay there as it met what I was expecting to have.

We stayed 3 nights in order to visit the Iban Tribe. The rooms are lovely positioned in longhouses, however, as ususal we got the one right at the end which was quite a walk. However there was a path/track outside our room and we had to keep the shutters closed when changing as staff were passing.

You arrive by boat and the hotel is at the top of a steep climb of about 50 steps from the jetty, the staff carried our bags, we never would have managed it, the climb itself was hard enough.

Staff were friendly and helpful.

Food was good, go for the al a carte, we had the BBQ one night but it wasn't that great.

No safe in room but free safetly deposit boxes in reception.

Pool lovely.

No Wifi but there is a computer to use free of charge - but forget it - after 20 mins it hadn't connected, just accept you are out in the wilds and not contactable for a few days!

Did the nature walk which included the treetop walk and would say it didn't seem safe at all. The treetop walk basically consisted of a plank placed over a ladder and although there were ropes each side it listed badly. I was first to cross and one of the metal ropes holding it up snapped and wanged about. - Personally I would not do it again!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the end of the longhouse nearest to the main building, they are very long! Beware...

This innovative resort was built in 1995 and, in jungle conditions, is showing some age. But it's still a wonderful, affordable destination for certain types of travelers. If you're one of these travelers, you'll enjoy it. If you're not, you should stay in Kuching or, perhaps, not travel to Sarawak at all.

First, you have to think about how you're going to get here. It's far from Kuching, which is where you're probably going to be originating. You have two options: a shuttle bus run by the hotel, which costs about US$50 per person and takes 4 hours, or driving yourself (easy, if you're not intimidated by driving in a non-Western country) about 3 1/2 hours. There's secure parking at their boat dock. In either scenario, you'll then take their boat about 20 minutes across a lake to the resort (check their boat schedule if you're driving yourself). Not many tourists rent cars in Kuching, but many should,

Once there, you'll find a somewhat faded but interesting hotel constructed to resemble a series of Iban longhouses. There's a nice pool area, open air restaurant, and a few other amusements (like a ping pong table). The hotel runs an activities desk with several tours, the highlights being a half day longhouse tour (about $40 per person), an hour semi-adventurous canopy walk behind the hotel ($2) and some fishing and trekking tours. There does not seem to be any opportunity to take non-hotel tours from the property, but the rates being charged by the Hilton seem competitive with other local tour operators.

Rooms at the resort are showing their age (no flat screens, and no viable internet service), but are comfortable -- especially when you consider that you are in the middle of Borneo, miles from "civilization." You'll likely find some ants in your bathroom, and plenty of bats and other things flying around outside your room in the open air "longhouse" corridors at certain hours. If you're deathly afraid of such activity, don't come here. The rooms seem large; as HHonors gold members, we were upgraded to very large and comfortable duplex suites.

The restaurant at the hotel is the most under-rated aspect of the property. Despite some illogical reviews, it's excellent, given the remote location. Breakfast is a good buffet, complete with omelette maker, and the best halal breakfast foods (sorry, pork eaters!) that you can get in Malaysia. It's also free when booking under certain room rates, or if you're a Hilton HHonors gold member.

Dinner was the biggest surprise: it's terrific, if you bother to read the menu and avoid the over-priced (US$25) buffet. The highlight is a series of local dishes, excellently prepared with high quality ingredients for about US$8 each. That's perhaps more expensive that dinner in most Malaysian restaurants, but the food is definitely better at the Hilton, and I don't know of too many Hiltons where dinner entrees are $8. Liquor is expensive (as is often the case in muslim Malaysia), so if you care about what you're spending, you should probably bring your own (refrigerators in the room) and drink bottled water at dinner.

The overall setting is very comfortable, atmospheric and peaceful and, from the hotel, you have access to nature (don't expect animals, it's mostly plant life and native culture) at fairly reasonable cost. I think this is a great way to visit an Iban longhouse without actually having to stay in one (where conditions are pretty primative for the non-backpacker set). Best of all, the hotel is pretty cheap; rates seem to start at around US$60, and the hotel is a steal in the HHonors program as a Cat. 1 hotel (basically free).

Keep in mind that if you don't do their tours, there's not much to actually "do" at the hotel, except relax by the pool. For this reason, it's probably best to limit yourself to 2 or 3 nights. We saw some people come for just a night, but this is pretty silly given the travel time from Kuching, and your limited ability to do anything at the hotel without at least one full day at the property.

To enjoy this property, you do need an adventurous spirit and to be in reasonably fit shape. You'll have to walk up some stairs (leave heavy luggage in Kuching or in your car), sit in small longboats for the tours, and be able to walk a semi-slippery trail or two. If you don't want to do these things, don't come here. You'll also need to tolerate some service slip-ups (like the front desk might forget your welcome drink) and be able to appreciate non-Western conditions when you leave the hotel (the longhouse you can visit is fairly primitive). But folks who want to see an interesting part of Borneo and are willing to put up with a very modest degree of personal discomfort are likely to enjoy their stays immensely.

My only hesitation in recommending the hotel is the long trip from Kuching. If you only have a few days there, I'd probably recommend staying closer to Kuching, and seeing some fantastic sites there (like Bako National Park). But if you have at least 5 days in Kuching, it's definitely worth a trip out to the Hilton -- if you're up for a little soft adventure.
