“Adventure & Relaxation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

In the middle of nowhere, this resort was purposely built with the reason that 'natural beauty' and history of the brave headhunters of Boneo inhabitated in this area. Across the lake of the huge hydrodam, Hilton offers free boatrides to the resort at specific times. Luckily, although I did not know about this as I didn't know what to expect, I arrived 5 mins before the departure time, or it would have been a long wait. The boat could get a little slippery with the weather and splashes of water from the lake as 2 slipped during our trip, so please be careful.

Also, expect a short walk uphill to the resort. Wear comfortable shoes and sunnies. The resort is not the typical resort you should expect. Yes, that's right! Expect to be in a traditional longhouse instead, with galleries between balcony and bedrooms traditionally is the hive of activity areas "Ruai" for the Ibans. There's no lakeview roomsalso for a reason - the Ibans believed that had the longhouse faced the other way (with its rooms, its back facing the river),it would offend the good and bad spirits of the lake.

The Resort has a whole schedule of 'different' activities you can partake, including fishing, trips to the village longhouses, trips to beautiful waterfalls, guided nature walk and many more. I personally loved the BBQ local fish that they had during the buffet dinners.

Overall, I would say that it was a goodtrip. Definitely not the typical 5 star resort experiences one could have, but a 5 star different and unique Borneo experience!

Room Tip: The longhouses are long. So if you are lazy like me, please opt to choose for rooms that are closer...

I loved my experience at the Batang Ai longhouse. I was determined to be able to see some of the longhouse culture during my recent trip to Borneo and I did indeed have that experience staying at this hotel. The hotel was probably really a stunning property when it was first built, it has seen some wear and tear, and it has been maintained very well, It has seen many visitors, and yet they maintain the Hilton standard of clean and comfortable. It was a relaxing visit, with fantastic massages available, I had one every day and it was first rate. Ramona the activity director was helpful and fantastic and the staff was so nice and helpful. The food was good and the pool area was very relaxing and pleasant. The manager John was so nice and helpful. I just loved my visit there and would recommend a visit if you want to see local culture and get a feeling for the Dayak culture and to have a semi-rest from intense Sarawak touring.

We loved this place even though you wouldn't call it 5* and would liked to have stayed longer. The staff were very friendly and the food was good. It is a wooden building which sort of reminded of us a colonial building. There were lots of bats flying in and out of the verandah as well swallows and even baby owls, along with the geckos running around.
If you are looking for fluffy towels and robes and good toiletries you won't find them here but it is such a lovely peaceful place it didn't seem to matter. Would go again.

This hotel (being managed, not owned by Hilton) is very tired, and not especially clean. Some parts of the hotel (e.g. the verandas) were missing sections of roof, and were clearly in need of some prompt maintenance.

The hotel is home to numerous bats and geckos, all perfectly harmless and amusing, but of course do make life even harder for the cleaning staff.

The rooms were large enough, but the bathrooms especially are very tired and in need of refurbishment.

Both breakfast and dinner were very good, though the bar prices are astronomical with a Tiger beer costing 28RM plus service and tax; by far the most expensive we found anywhere in Borneo, even soft drinks are very expensive. We were advised about this, and bought some cans of beer (7RM each) in a local store before travelling to the resort (there is a fridge in the room).

There is a modest swimming pool but otherwise not much else to do around the hotel, although we went on a short free guided nature trail run by the hotel, which was quite interesting.

We stayed for just one night, after spending one day/night in a very traditional longhouse, which was fascinating, but very tiring. The Batang Ai resort was quite close by, and gave us a good opportunity to rest, and have a shower before moving on.

As we flew in to Kuching I was sat next to a local on the plane who pulled a face when I said we were coming here and he said that the place was looking"tired". Our experience was that whilst the place is not in pristine condition it is more than satisfactory. Not being pristine is appropriate for the jungle setting. The staff were friendly and helpful. We went on the jungle/treetop walk and the girl who took us was nothing but helpful, full of information and very patient. (We were with a wonderful group of Spanish tourists on the walk and so the walk took longer than usual because of one the group translating from English to Spanish). The setting is brilliant and hopefully I have been able to include a photo of the superb sunset we were treated to one evening. The food was good and plentiful with the staff only too happy to help.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

We visited Batang Ai Longhouse in March 2013.
Overall we liked the rooms, and had no problems with the transfer from Kuching. The food was okay, it was a buffet style and many of the dishes were not replenished so a lot of the food was not available.

The location is beautiful, we were a bit disappointed by the lack of wildlife - but this obviously cannot be helped!

I think the main thing which disappointed us was the staff - one member of staff in particular. We paid for the 'jungle walk' which takes place just behind the resort. An older man (a 'headhunter') accompanied us, and we thought the purpose of the walk was to take in the beautiful surroundings and hopefully learn more about them. However, this man took the opportunity to have a rant about the politics of Malaysia in a very aggressive manner. He singled out different people and asked them leading questions in a patronising and atagonistic way. It was not an enjoyable experience. He ignored any questions people asked him about the wildlife and plants in the area.
We were disappointed the next day when we had the same man accompany us on the trek to the waterfall. It was a great trip, however he walked off to the waterfall very fast - without caring about how we were getting on or if we would like to stop and take in the surroundings. Again, he was incredibly patronising and atagonistic which is a shame because the trip was lovely.
Overall I think our stay in Batang Ai was not as enjoyable as it could have been due to our experiences with this man. Also the transfer from Kuching is very over-priced.

We rate this hotel a 5 star for it's location in the jungle and the amenities they are able to provide their guests. Please remember where you are and how remote so don't expect all the modern technology. We recommend that you take a tour with the locals up the river to see the falls and experience a riverside BBQ. A memorable experience!
