“So Maybe We Won't Make This An Annual Tradition Afterall”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

We visited last February and had such a great time that my daughter exclaimed: "Let's make this a family tradition!" We enjoyed the Tenaya during off season and their amenities and I wrote a thoroughly positive review of the resort. However, in just a year we had a considerable different experience. We stayed in the Spa Suite again, but now they no longer provide spa magazines in the rooms which I thought was a great touch. Also, this year we did not have internet connection in our room. To add insult to injury, there is now a large and unclassy "Fill line" sticker inside the spa tub indicated how much water you can put in the tub. This "fill line" was approximately 6 inches deep. I am sorry, but when I take a bath, I like to be able to cover more than my legs. Another bummer was that the water did not get as hot as it did last year and the in door swimming pool did not seem as warm either. We also did not get our Sunday newspaper which was fine, but certainly noticed. Seems like they are trying to save a buck here and there all the while instituting a daily resort fee this year! I have no problem paying a resort fee if it's implemented to provide the SAME quality of service and experience. Not the case here. Not sure if we will try to come back again.

Thank you for your feedback, isepa. We are sorry to hear you felt changes to some amenities altered your perception of Tenaya. The fill line was instituted as a recommendation for the safety of our guests staying in Spa Suites. We appreciate your comments and hope to see you again.

Pros:
- Great location, can't beat it if you're entering Yosemite from the South. It's practically at the doorstep of Yosemite
- Upscale yet not out-of-reach expensive.
- Well maintained, all great amenities are on-site (food, restaurants, concierge etc.)
- Its not a small lodge, its a large hotel with all that comes with it (support, staff, plenty of rooms etc.)
- Very helpful staff. We went in January 2014 and found the staff at all levels to be very helpful and courteous as you would expect from a hotel this size (doorman, concierge, lobby, restaurants etc.)
- Lots of activities for kids (indoor ice skating, pool, board games available from front desk, kid friendly food choices on menus etc.)

- Cons:
- Not many but a few are listed below.
- Expensive food on site. The restaurants are a bit overpriced but not way unaffordable. Example, breakfast buffet for adults is $16 and kids $9 but dinner adds up quickly and you will end up paying $80-$90 for family of 4 with a fairly modest meal.
- Room service, housekeeping help not too prompt - they seem a bit understaffed for a hotel that size given how long one might wait if you ask for housekeeping etc. help
- Pool was not adequately heated - felt it was a few degrees cooler than what it should be in winter. The hot tubs were not too warm either. There are 2 hot tubs, both were quite full and it was hard for kids and some folks to enjoy the temps - water was not warm

Room Tip: If you get a cheaper room that overlooks the parking lot, go for it. The parking lot is not too nois...

Staff was very helpful. Standard rooms are nice. Sink separate from WC and shower. Three restaurants. I ate in two of them. Highly recommend the grilled cheese and soup. Gift shop above average. Night time outdoor seating with large fires was fun. Didn't make it to Yosemite so can't comment on the drive. Would stay again.

We enjoyed our time here. Of course the location is majestic, just outside the southern entrance to Yosemite. The staff at the Lodge has to be some of the most helpful and friendly I have encountered. Everyone from the front desk, to the concierge, to the restaurant, they all go above and beyond to meet the guests' needs. The exterior of the lodge is gorgeous, but inside it looks a little tired. The rooms are nothing special, at all. For the price, I was expecting more. We stayed in 234 and the bathroom tile was chipped, the grout stained, frayed carpet edges coming up in places; it just doesn't match the outside. Also, it was extremely noisy. There were people up and down the hallway conversing loudly and singing well into the night on Saturday night. Sunday night was much more quiet. I doubt I'd return without an amazing discount.

Room Tip: Ask to be away from large groups as they seem to go up and down the hall from room to room making no...

Green Features: They seemed "green" to me. They had recycling and you could keep your towels for two days if you wanted.

Thanks for your feedback, KniteRiter. We are so pleased to hear you had a wonderful experience with our staff and enjoyed your surroundings, but are sorry that you were disappointed with your room. Tenaya is currently undergoing room renovations in order to provide our guests with a full Four Diamond experience. We appreciate your comments.

We got a special deal on Travel Zoo. Everyone was great when we checked in, especially Brent the bellman. He took us to our room which was a little dark so he took the time to show us a few upgrade rooms. We negotiated a upgrade with Amanda at the front desk and had a wonderful room with a whirlpool tub and balcony. This place is huge with several pools and activities. Unfortunately the weather turned bad and we couldn't take advantage of activities. A little bad news......this place is in the middle of nowhere! They have two restaurants that offer virtually the same food varying high prices. You're pretty much stuck here because the next restaurant is about a half-hour to 45 minutes away depending on weather on a dark winding road. The food and service was not wonderful. Very nice servers, but not enough of them. All in all a real nice place, we enjoyed it but they need to check out their food operations.

We began our trip at 3 am when we left for the airport in Texas. We flew to San Jose, CA and drove to Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite. Arriving at 6:00 pm ( our 8:00 pm ), so a very long day. When we walked through the doors, our spirits were lifted. The Christmas decorations, a live band with a beautiful singer, and families and pets everywhere! It was like we entered a Christmas card.
Our rooms were just as described on the website and better, very nice large rooms. If I had to be nit picky, the faucet in the tub needs updating. The room had a small refrigerator which was helpful.
The hotel has many eating opportunities from expensive to family style. We enjoy our breakfast and nightly meals. You can also purchase box lunches for your day out.
Our schedule only allowed 2 nights which was not even.

The Tenaya Lodge is a very nice place with a great setting. It is close to the entrance to Yosemite National Park and the Mariposa Grove, but at least 45 minutes from the Valley (far longer in summer when you will probably be stuck behind multiple RVs on the winding road). It has very nice rooms and good service. There are a lot of amenities on site, including several very good restaurants. We ate the the Sierra one night. The food was excellent, but very pricey. Our main complaint is the price for the rooms. We were quoted a very reasonable price, but when we checked in, we were informed about a $15 per night "resort fee." If that price had been included upfront, I would still have booked the rooms since it was still reasonable. However, quoting us one price and then tacking on this fee is deceptive and sneaky. It is probably becoming very prevalent, but I will avoid resorts that follow this practice.

Room Tip: I recommend the cottages. They are very nice, quiet, and don't cost much more.

Green Features: They seem to be considerate of the environment is many ways, but they change the room towels every day - not very water conscious.

Thanks for your comments, BillB947. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and dining experiences. The resort fee is a brand new implementation, but we apologize for any frustration felt with your new nightly rate. We appreciate your feedback.
